Not necessarily. There is no established universal rule that learners forget most of a course within one month. What you retain depends on the material, how you learned it, how often you have tried to recall it, and what a later test asks you to produce. The famous “forgetting curve” is often treated as a forecast for every student, but its underlying measure and learning task are much narrower.
What the one-month claim can—and cannot—tell you
Forgetting is real, but a precise statement such as “you forget most of last month’s course” needs evidence about a particular course, learner group, assessment, and time since learning. The available course studies do not establish a single percentage that applies to every subject or student.

A 2006 longitudinal study of consumer-behavior course knowledge tested students between 8 and 101 weeks after course completion. Its abstract reports that most knowledge gained was lost within two years—not that most was lost after one month. A separate 2020 study examined conceptual learning after an interactive introductory mechanics course over intervals from 1 to 15 months. These studies show that course retention can be studied over time, but findings from particular courses are not a universal countdown.
What the famous Ebbinghaus curve actually measures
A Pearson educational psychology chapter reproduces a figure attributed to Ebbinghaus (1885/1913), with savings scores of 58% after 20 minutes, 44% after one hour, 34% after one day, 25% after six days, and 21% after 31 days. The task involved memorizing nonsense syllables, not learning a typical course.

Those values are savings scores, tied to how much effort is saved when material is relearned. They are not direct measurements of the percentage of course content a student can recall, and they should not be read as a prediction for your own class. Recall, concept-test performance, and savings during relearning are different outcomes.
Why some course knowledge lasts longer than other knowledge
A month since a class ended does not, by itself, tell you what you can still use. Retention depends partly on whether you understood the ideas, how much you practiced retrieving them, and whether the new situation calls for the same kind of knowledge. A fact you can recognize when shown may still be difficult to recall without a cue; a concept you can explain or apply may be accessible even if you cannot reproduce the original lesson word for word.

Course-specific findings also reflect their own materials and assessments. A study of consumer behavior, a study of mechanics concepts, and an experiment with vocabulary pairs cannot be combined into one average forgetting rate without losing what each actually measured.
How to improve what you remember
Try to retrieve before you reread
Retrieval practice means attempting to produce an answer from memory. Close your notes and explain a concept, solve a problem, or write down the main steps before checking the material. Then use the notes to find and correct gaps. Rereading can help you review, but recognizing a familiar passage is not the same as recalling it unaided.

A review called Remembering What We Learn describes a passage-learning experiment: participants who read a passage four times forgot nearly half of what they had initially recalled after a week, while those who read it once and took three tests during learning forgot about 14% of the content they had initially recalled. Those figures describe that experiment and its initially recalled content, not all learners or all course material. The review’s practical takeaway is that testing during learning can slow forgetting and support longer-term retention.
Space practice instead of cramming it together
Return to material over time rather than doing every practice attempt in one sitting. A 2022 study asked 102 participants to learn 40 German-Japanese vocabulary pairs using intervals of 7.5 minutes, 4, 8, 12, or 24 hours, then tested them after 24 hours and seven days. Its condition-specific results underscore that spacing intervals and outcomes matter; they do not establish one timetable for every learner or course.

Use a schedule as a starting point, not a law
An ERIC-indexed 2011 study summarized three experiments involving 533 students learning conceptual material. Its authors recommended practicing recall to an initial criterion of three correct recalls, then relearning at widely spaced intervals. That is a study-based recommendation, not a proven universal schedule. You can use it as a prompt to revisit difficult concepts, while adjusting the timing to the subject and your results.

- For concepts, explain the idea in your own words and give an example without looking.
- For procedures, work through a problem from a blank page, then check each step.
- For terminology, cover the definition and try to supply it from the term—or reverse the direction if the course requires both.
- For material you miss, study the correction and try recalling it again later rather than simply rereading it several times in a row.
Flashcards can support this kind of self-quizzing, but they are only one format. The important part is making yourself retrieve an answer and checking it, not using a particular app, deck, or product.

How to check what you still know
- Choose a representative question. Pick a problem, concept, or explanation that reflects what the course expected you to learn.
- Answer from memory first. Write, solve, or explain without notes so you test recall rather than recognition.
- Check against a reliable course source. Mark what was correct, incomplete, or mistaken.
- Revisit the weak points later. Try retrieving them again after time has passed, rather than treating one review session as proof of durable learning.
A single self-test is a snapshot, not a verdict on everything you learned. It can, however, identify which parts need more practice and give you a better answer than assuming either that you remember everything or that you have forgotten most of it.
