A September 24, 2026 Instagram video reportedly showed Matt Roeske drinking from a vessel he described as a vintage 1920s radium-water jug and calling radium water “perfectly harmless” and able to “heal every single ailment.” Those are claims attributed to him, not proof of what the vessel contained or whether it was safe. The distinction matters: the historic radium medicine Radithor is documented, but the contents and radiation measurements of the modern vessel have not been established by the cited reporting.
What the Instagram report says—and what it does not establish
CBRN World reported on September 30, 2026, citing NewsGuard, that Roeske appeared in a video posted to the Cultivate Elevate Instagram account on September 24. The report says he drank from what he called a vintage 1920s radium-water jug and described the water as “perfectly harmless” and able to “heal every single ailment.” It reproduces the caption as “Radioactive Radium Water healing all in 1929.” CBRN World’s report

The report is secondhand: the original Instagram post was not independently authenticated in the available account, and no independent assay or radiation measurement is cited. The vessel’s identity and provenance, any radionuclides in it, its activity, and any resulting dose are therefore unresolved. “Radium water” is Roeske’s reported description, not a verified laboratory finding. The video account alone cannot establish either the liquid’s contents or its safety.

Radithor was a real commercial product, unlike the unverified modern vessel. Oak Ridge Associated Universities’ Museum of Radiation and Radioactivity describes each half-ounce bottle as triple-distilled water guaranteed by its manufacturer, William J. Bailey, to contain at least one microcurie each of radium-226 and radium-228. Bailey offered $1,000 to anyone who could prove a bottle contained less than the guaranteed amount; ORAU says no one did. A bottle cost one dollar. ORAU’s Radithor history

Eben Byers’s case
ORAU says Eben Byers began taking Radithor after an arm injury in December 1927 and averaged three bottles a day for about two years. His teeth began falling out in 1930. ORAU quotes FTC investigator Robert Winn’s report describing the loss of most of Byers’s jaw and progressive damage to his remaining bone tissue. Byers died in 1932. This historical account concerns prolonged ingestion of a documented radium-containing product; it does not establish what was in the Instagram vessel or whether anyone received a comparable exposure.
The FTC’s order
On December 19, 1931, the Federal Trade Commission ordered Bailey Radium Laboratories to stop making therapeutic-value representations for Radithor and to stop representing it as harmless. ORAU says Bailey did not contest the order after Byers’s testimony. The order is a documented regulatory response to claims about Radithor, not a finding about the modern video’s vessel.

Is radium water safe to drink?
A blanket safety claim cannot be supported by the Instagram report. It does not identify the liquid or report its composition, activity, or dose. Nor does a claim that a liquid is harmless or curative demonstrate either proposition.
Radioactivity, the radionuclide present, and radiation dose are related but distinct. The EPA explains that radionuclides are radioactive forms of elements and that each radionuclide has a characteristic half-life; some occur naturally and others are human-made or products of nuclear reactions. That general description does not tell us whether radium—or any other radionuclide—was in this vessel, how much might have been present, or whether an exposure occurred. - Lab fees included
Radithor’s documented contents and the Byers history show why historical claims that a radium-containing product was harmless or therapeutic should not be confused with evidence of safety. They do not supply a measurement for the modern object. Without verified contents and dose information, the available reporting supports neither a claim that the vessel contained radium nor a claim that it was safe to drink.
