Which clock fits your routine?
Choose Hatch Restore 3 for a configured bedtime flow
Restore 3 is the better match when your main problem is getting through a repeatable wind-down sequence rather than simply finding a brighter alarm. You configure routines in the Hatch app, combining light, sleep audio and alarms. Once configured, Hatch says the routine can run with your phone down, and the device has physical bedside controls. That makes it useful if you want to keep a phone out of the bedroom after setup.

The Sunrise Alarm feature is built around a custom light-and-sound combination. Hatch describes it this way: “The Restore 3 Sunrise Alarm feature allows you to create a custom light and sound combination to gently wake you up.” The light gradually brightens, then the alarm sound starts after the sunrise phase finishes. The reviewed Hatch support material describes gradual, configurable light but does not provide a directly comparable 15–90-minute duration range.
Restore 3 also makes sense if you want sleep content to be part of the device’s value. Hatch lists more than 40 sleep sounds with the clock, plus basic routines and sunrise alarms. Hatch+ adds an expanded original-content library, but it is not required for those core functions.
Choose Lumie Shine 300 for clock-native controls, radio and scheduling
Shine 300 is the better fit when you want to set the alarm and use the clock without building a routine in a phone app. Lumie lists a 15–90-minute sunrise, adjustable light intensity, a matching 15–90-minute sunset fade, 15 sounds and FM radio. It also lists tap-control snooze and the choice of daily or weekly alarms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That combination suits routines such as a longer, low-intensity fade on workdays, a different schedule on selected days, or listening to a local radio station as you wake. The sunset function can provide a timed dimming period before bed, with optional audio, without requiring a separate content membership.
How the sunrise and sunset lighting differs
Hatch: customizable light and sound
Hatch’s sunrise alarm lets you select a light and sound combination in the app. The light ramps up gradually; the sound follows when the light sequence is complete. This design gives you control over the character of the wake-up experience, but the support page reviewed for Restore 3 does not specify a numeric sunrise-duration range comparable to Lumie’s 15–90 minutes. If an exact fade length is central to your decision, confirm the current in-app options before purchase.
Hatch’s strength is the ability to treat the wake-up as one step in a broader routine. You can pair the sunrise with the bedtime sequence you already configured rather than operating it as an isolated alarm. The product information supports that configurable approach, but it does not establish that Hatch’s light is brighter, gentler or medically better than Lumie’s.
Lumie: an explicit 15–90-minute fade
Shine 300 publishes a 15–90-minute sunrise and sunset range and lets you adjust intensity. A short setting can provide a brisk transition, while a 90-minute setting gives the light more time to become noticeable before the alarm. The same range applies to the sunset fade, so you can set a repeatable dimming period as part of your evening routine.
Lumie summarizes the feature set as: “15-90 minute sunrise/sunset duration, 15 sounds, FM radio, tap-control snooze, choice of light intensity, daily/weekly alarm and more.” This is a product specification, not evidence that a particular duration will improve sleep for every user. If you and a partner prefer different brightness levels or schedules, check how the settings behave in your intended room before committing to a fixed routine.
Audio: included sounds versus an expanded library
What comes with Restore 3
Hatch lists 40-plus sleep sounds, basic routines and sunrise alarms as included features. Those functions cover the core use case of starting a sound at bedtime, running a routine and waking to a gradual light alarm. The exact sound catalog can change, so review the current in-app offering if a particular track or category matters.
Hatch+ is an optional expansion rather than a requirement for operating the clock. Hatch’s support explanation separates the free features from the membership library; the free tier includes the core sounds and routines, while Hatch+ provides additional original content. A buyer who only wants a basic sound, routine and sunrise alarm can therefore evaluate Restore 3 on its hardware price without automatically adding a membership.

What comes with Shine 300
Lumie lists 15 built-in sounds and FM radio. Because those sources are part of the clock’s stated feature set, you can use them without a content subscription identified on the product listing. FM reception will still depend on your location, antenna placement and local signal strength.
For a household that already uses radio as a morning cue, Shine 300 avoids the need to stream audio from a phone. For someone who wants a large, changing library of guided or ambient content, Restore 3’s optional catalog is the more relevant feature to investigate. The choice is less about which device has “better” audio and more about whether you prefer a defined set of clock-native sounds or an app-managed content ecosystem.
Setup and everyday controls
Restore 3 setup path
- Install and open the Hatch app, then follow the pairing and setup prompts for Restore 3.
- Configure the bedtime routine: choose the light behavior, sleep audio and the sequence you want to run.
- Set the sunrise alarm’s light-and-sound combination and wake time.
- Run the routine from the device once it is saved, leaving the phone outside the immediate bedtime interaction.
- Use the clock’s physical controls for bedside operation after setup; return to the app when you want to redesign the routine.
The app is therefore part of configuration even though the phone does not have to remain part of the nightly routine. If you strongly prefer never to use an app for alarm setup, this is the main ergonomic disadvantage of Restore 3. It is also worth checking the current app experience during setup, since routine editing and content menus are software features that can change over time.
Shine 300 setup path
- Set the clock and choose the desired sunrise duration between 15 and 90 minutes.
- Select the light intensity and, if wanted, a built-in sound or FM radio.
- Choose a daily or weekly alarm schedule.
- Set the sunset fade separately if you want the clock to dim before bedtime.
- Use tap-control snooze at the bedside.
Lumie’s listed controls make Shine 300 more self-contained. The trade-off is that its routine is defined mainly by alarm, light, sound and radio settings rather than by a larger app-based sequence. If you want different weekday and weekend behavior, the explicit daily/weekly scheduling is a meaningful advantage, although you should confirm the exact schedule behavior when you set it up.
Does Hatch Restore 3 need a subscription?
No. Hatch says Restore 3 includes more than 40 sleep sounds, basic routines and sunrise alarms without requiring Hatch+. A 30-day Hatch+ trial is included, but continuing it is optional.

Treat those figures as recurring optional costs and verify the current offer before subscribing. The hardware price does not automatically include an ongoing membership.
When comparing ownership cost, decide whether the free sounds and routines meet your needs. If they do, Restore 3 can remain a one-time hardware purchase. If you want the expanded catalog, add the chosen monthly or annual fee to your budget and check the cancellation terms shown at checkout. A discounted annual plan still represents a recurring cost, so do not compare Lumie’s hardware-only price with Restore 3 plus Hatch+ unless you actually intend to use the paid library.
Which is better for common routines?
If you keep your phone out of the bedroom
Restore 3 is designed for app setup followed by phone-down operation, so it fits a routine in which the phone is used before bed but not during the routine itself. Shine 300 also avoids phone dependence for its listed controls, and may be simpler if you do not want an app involved even during initial setup. The key distinction is that Hatch requires the app for customization, while Lumie presents the relevant alarm, fade, sound and radio functions as clock features.
If you want a precise fade length
Shine 300 has the clearer specification: sunrise and sunset durations from 15 to 90 minutes. Choose it when that range and adjustable intensity are decision-critical. Hatch offers configurable gradual light, but the reviewed support page does not publish an equivalent numeric range. Do not assume the two clocks offer identical timing simply because both are marketed as sunrise alarms.
If radio is part of waking up
Choose Shine 300. FM radio is a listed feature, alongside 15 built-in sounds. Restore 3’s documented audio proposition is sleep sounds and alarms rather than an integrated FM tuner. Consider the room’s signal conditions and your preferred station before relying on radio as the only wake-up sound.

If bedtime audio variety matters most
Restore 3 is the stronger match if you value a larger sleep-sound ecosystem and are willing to evaluate optional Hatch+ content. Shine 300 provides a defined set of 15 sounds and radio, which is simpler but less expansive. Hatch’s free 40-plus sounds may be enough, so listen to the included catalog before assuming the membership is necessary.
If you need different weekday and weekend alarms
Shine 300 explicitly lists daily and weekly alarm options. Confirm the exact schedule behavior during setup, but that published feature makes it the safer choice for a routine that changes by day. Restore 3 can be configured around routines in the app, yet the product material reviewed here does not establish the same daily/weekly scheduling detail.
If two people share one bedroom
Start by comparing the controls each person will actually use. Lumie’s adjustable intensity, selected schedule and tap snooze are clock-level features. Hatch offers custom light-and-sound combinations and app-based routine editing. Neither product description establishes separate user profiles or independent schedules, so do not buy either expecting those features without confirming them directly.

Manufacturer pages establish the feature differences above, but they do not prove that one clock improves sleep more than the other. No independent head-to-head clinical trial was identified in the official product sources reviewed.
Hatch reported results from its October 2023 biannual Sleep Wellness Impact survey of 1,000 Restore and Restore 2 customers: 10% said their sleep had improved, 12% said they enjoyed waking up more and 11% said they felt better rested. These are vendor-conducted customer survey results. They are not controlled clinical findings, do not compare Restore 3 with Lumie and should not be treated as a forecast for a new buyer.
Use the clocks as routine tools, not as medical treatment. If persistent insomnia, severe daytime sleepiness or another sleep concern is affecting you, discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on an alarm clock’s marketing claims.
A practical decision checklist
- Start with the control model: app-configured routines point to Hatch; clock-based setup and tap snooze point to Lumie.
- Check the light requirement: choose Lumie when a published 15–90-minute sunrise or sunset range and adjustable intensity matter; choose Hatch when custom light-and-sound combinations matter more.
- List your audio source: Hatch includes 40-plus sleep sounds and offers optional expanded content; Lumie includes 15 sounds and FM radio.
- Calculate recurring spend: Hatch+ is optional at the listed $5.99 monthly or $59.99 annual rate; Lumie’s listing identifies no content subscription.
- Match the schedule: Lumie explicitly lists daily and weekly alarms; verify the current Hatch app’s scheduling controls if you need different day patterns.
- Consider phone habits: Hatch supports phone-down use after configuration, while Lumie is aimed at clock-native operation.
- Check the purchase terms: prices, stock, retailer warranty coverage and return windows can vary by seller and can change after publication.
Before you buy
Read the current product page for the exact model and regional version. Hatch lists Restore 3 at $169.99 on its U.S. page, while Lumie’s U.S. comparison page lists Shine 300 at $169; both figures are point-in-time listings, not guaranteed future prices. Confirm what is in the box, the applicable warranty, the return period and whether any trial automatically converts to a paid Hatch+ membership.
