Hasbro has told 587 employees based in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, that they must accept a transfer to Boston or lose their jobs. Their final scheduled day in Pawtucket is December 24, 2026; employees who accept the transfer are scheduled to begin at 400 Summer Street in Boston on January 4, 2027.
What Hasbro’s notice requires
The October 8, 2026 employee notice covers 587 Pawtucket workers. It gives them a binary employment decision: accept the move to Boston or have employment end when the Pawtucket worksite closes for them. Hasbro’s filing under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act is described as a formality tied to the relocation plan the company announced in 2025.

Federal WARN rules generally require at least 60 days’ notice for qualifying mass layoffs or plant closings. The dates in Hasbro’s notice provide more than that minimum interval, but the filing does not change the practical consequence for a worker who declines the Boston assignment: the job ends on December 24.
Why Hasbro is moving the work to Boston
Hasbro announced the relocation on September 8, 2025. The company says concentrating its teams in Boston’s Seaport district will improve collaboration, support innovation, make it easier to recruit talent and help long-term growth. Hasbro spokesperson Abby Hodes said, “We know any change in commute matters to our people, so we’ve been working closely with them throughout the transition.”

The planned site at 400 Summer Street is designed to provide 265,000 square feet across seven floors. Hasbro said the Boston location would bring together work involving toys, board games, licensing and most corporate services. At least 700 full-time employees were expected to transition to the Boston operation by the end of 2026, a figure that is broader than the 587 Pawtucket employees covered by the October notice.
Hasbro has also said it looks forward to beginning the year in the new location. The company’s stated strategy is therefore not simply a change of address for one office: it is a consolidation of major business functions and corporate staff in Boston.

What the 587 workers have to decide
The employment choice
Workers who accept the transfer remain scheduled to work for Hasbro and report to the Boston site on January 4, 2027. Workers who decline do not retain their Pawtucket positions; Hasbro’s notice sets December 24, 2026, as the end of employment for those who do not relocate.

The notice makes the location decision an individual calculation. A move from Pawtucket to Boston can affect travel time, transportation arrangements, childcare schedules and household routines, but the published reports do not quantify those costs for particular employees. Hasbro has acknowledged that commuting changes matter, while saying it has worked with employees during the transition.

What has not been disclosed
Public reports do not give an acceptance count, so it is not yet known how many of the 587 employees will ultimately work in Boston or leave Hasbro. The available reporting also does not specify individual relocation assistance, commuting reimbursements, severance terms or tax effects. Those details should not be assumed from the WARN filing.
What happens to the Pawtucket headquarters
After the transition, Hasbro’s Pawtucket headquarters is slated for sale. The property consists of a 343,000-square-foot main building and an adjacent 23,000-square-foot building, according to a Hasbro securities filing reported by Boston.com. The planned sale removes the company’s long-standing headquarters footprint from its operating portfolio, although the timing, buyer and eventual use of the property have not been established in the reports.

Why the move matters to Rhode Island
The relocation has consequences beyond the affected employees. When Hasbro announced the plan, about 1,000 of its employees were based in Rhode Island; the company employed approximately 4,500 people worldwide. Losing the Pawtucket headquarters could affect nearby businesses, municipal revenue, commercial real estate and the city’s identity as Hasbro’s home for generations.

Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien said, “Hasbro has an obligation to engage with the community that has supported it for generations.” His statement reflects the civic concern that a headquarters sale and a Boston-centered workforce may reduce the company’s day-to-day presence in Rhode Island even if some ties remain.

Relocation timeline
- September 8, 2025: Hasbro announces plans to relocate its headquarters and major functions to Boston’s Seaport district.
- October 8, 2026: Hasbro issues the notice covering 587 Pawtucket employees.
- December 24, 2026: Final scheduled workday in Pawtucket for the covered employees; those declining the transfer lose their jobs as of this date.
- January 4, 2027: Employees accepting the transfer are scheduled to start at 400 Summer Street in Boston.
What remains uncertain
The immediate dates and job consequence are clear, but the longer-term outcome is not. Hasbro has not reported how many employees will accept the transfer, and the public reports do not establish whether every planned Boston role will be filled by current Pawtucket staff. The future sale of the two Pawtucket buildings, including the timing and reuse of the site, is also unresolved.
For the affected workers, the deadline is effectively set by the notice: remain with Hasbro by taking the Boston assignment, or leave the company when the Pawtucket positions end on December 24, 2026.
