That makes the unqualified claim that Sama was “not announced” as the starter appear outdated. The report also said Wisconsin had not released a depth chart for that game, and the available sources do not confirm a newer official designation for Wisconsin’s next game.
What was reported about Wisconsin’s season opener?
A September 2026 Yahoo Sports report said Fickell named Sama Wisconsin’s starting running back against Notre Dame, attributing the news to a social post by Jesse Temple. The report also said the team did not release a depth chart for the season opener. The searched sources did not surface Temple’s original post or an official Wisconsin statement, so this is secondary reporting of the announcement rather than a direct team confirmation.
Is Abu Sama still Wisconsin’s RB1?
The available evidence does not establish who will start in a later game. A season-opening designation and a current game-week designation are separate snapshots; without a newer confirmation, it would be too broad to say Sama remains the starter.
Ourlads’ third-party 2026 Wisconsin depth chart lists Sama first at running back and Darrion Dupree second. That listing is corroboration from an outside depth-chart provider, not an official Wisconsin announcement.

Who is Abu Sama, and what is the backfield context?
Sama’s roster status and Iowa State production
Wisconsin’s 2026 football roster lists Abu Sama III as a senior running back, number 3. Before transferring to Wisconsin, he played at Iowa State. Wisconsin’s 2026 spring prospectus records his Iowa State rushing totals as follows:

Dupree’s 2025 production for Wisconsin
Wisconsin’s 2026 spring prospectus says returning back Darrion Dupree led the team with 363 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 2025. That makes him relevant context in the backfield, but the prospectus does not specify how carries will be divided in 2026.
