Hardware wallet security checklist: seals, firmware, PINs and recovery phrases

A hardware wallet is safest when you verify the supply chain, inspect the package, install only vendor-signed firmware, choose a non-obvious PIN, confirm every transaction on the wallet’s own screen, and create and protect a recovery phrase yourself. A box seal is useful evidence, but it cannot prove that every component is authentic on its own. Use the following checks before transferring funds.

1. Buy from a channel the manufacturer authorizes

Supply-chain security starts before the device reaches your desk. Purchase from the manufacturer’s official shop, its stated marketplace storefront, or a reseller listed as authorized. Trezor specifically warns against unauthorized third-party purchases because you cannot know who previously had access to a device. A discounted listing, a used device, or a seller with an unclear return history adds uncertainty that a seal cannot remove.

Keep evidence of the purchase

  • Save the order confirmation, invoice, seller name, and shipment tracking record.
  • Photograph the unopened shipping box and retail packaging before removing anything.
  • Record the model and serial information shown on the packaging, if present.
  • Do not accept a replacement or “preconfigured” wallet from a seller unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that process.

These records help you challenge a counterfeit or tampered shipment and establish which exact model you received. They do not replace the device’s own authenticity and firmware checks.

2. Inspect the package before connecting the wallet

Examine the retail box, labels, seams, and accessories in good light. Look for re-glued cardboard, mismatched printing, scratched labels, opened plastic, residue from removed tape, or accessories that appear repacked. Do not connect a suspicious device merely to see whether it works; connecting it can begin a setup flow before you have documented the condition in which it arrived.

How to interpret a tamper-evident seal

Ledger advises that a damaged tamper-proof seal or any sign of tampering is a reason not to use the device. Trezor documents model-specific holographic seals, including a seal covering the USB-C port on the Trezor Safe 7. Compare the seal with the manufacturer’s current documentation for your exact model rather than relying on photographs from an older generation.

A seal is one signal in a broader authentication process. A convincing replacement seal, an intact outer box with a modified device inside, or a genuine device loaded with unofficial software can defeat a visual inspection. Photograph damage, stop setup, and contact the manufacturer or the authorized seller through its published support route. Do not peel a questionable seal and continue “just to test it.”

3. Confirm a clean device and signed firmware

Use the manufacturer’s official application for initial setup and updates. Trezor states that its devices are distributed without firmware installed; firmware is installed during setup. That clean-install behavior gives you a useful baseline: a device that arrives with a wallet, recovery phrase, or unexplained account already configured is not following the expected process.

What the firmware check should show

Trezor’s bootloader verifies the firmware signature each time the device connects. Unofficial firmware produces a warning. Treat any signature warning, unexpected firmware prompt, or failed verification as a stop condition. Disconnect the wallet, do not enter a PIN or recovery phrase, and obtain support from the manufacturer using a different, trusted device if possible.

Other manufacturers may present the check differently, but the security principle is the same: install updates only through the official application, verify that the software identifies the expected model, and read the warning rather than dismissing it. A successful installation does not prove that a computer is clean; it proves that the wallet accepted software with the expected signature.

Clean setup indicators

  • The wallet asks you to create a new wallet or restore one; it does not display someone else’s accounts.
  • The recovery phrase is generated during your setup on the device itself.
  • The official application reports the expected model and firmware state.
  • No support representative, seller, website, or application asks you to type the recovery phrase into a computer or phone.

4. Choose a PIN that resists guessing

A PIN protects the wallet when someone obtains the physical device. Ledger recommends a random, difficult-to-guess four- to six-digit PIN. Do not use a birth date, address number, phone suffix, repeated digits, a simple sequence, or a number reused on another account.

PIN design rules

  • Generate the digits randomly rather than adapting a familiar number.
  • Do not write the PIN beside the wallet or on the recovery-phrase card.
  • Shield the screen while entering it in public.
  • Never reveal it to a seller, “support agent,” or remote-access technician.
  • Learn the model’s lockout behavior before storing substantial funds.

Security features differ by model. Some devices enforce attempt limits in hardware; Trezor documents Secure Element protections and attempt limits on supported devices. Confirm the exact behavior for your model in current manufacturer documentation. Do not assume that every wallet erases itself after the same number of failed attempts, and do not deliberately test the limit with a valuable wallet.

5. Verify every transaction on the wallet’s trusted screen

A computer or phone can be compromised even when the wallet itself is genuine. Malware can replace a copied address, alter an amount, or prompt you to sign a different network transaction. The wallet’s own display is the trusted point for the final decision.

Check these fields before approving

  1. Compare the destination address shown on the wallet with the address you intended to use. For large transfers, compare the beginning and end and, when practical, the entire address.
  2. Confirm the amount and asset, including decimal placement.
  3. Confirm the network or chain. An address that looks familiar can still be used on an unintended network.
  4. Review fees and any contract or data summary the device provides.
  5. Approve only when the wallet display matches the transaction you initiated.

BitBox describes this on-device detail verification as a core principle, alongside keeping private keys on the device and checking firmware and authenticity. If the wallet display is blank, unreadable, inconsistent with the computer, or asks you to approve an action you did not start, reject it and investigate from a trusted environment.

6. Generate the recovery phrase yourself

The recovery phrase is the backup from which the wallet derives its private keys. Ledger says the wallet generates the phrase; Trezor says setup generates a unique wallet backup. During a normal new-wallet setup, the words must appear on the wallet’s own screen or be confirmed through its documented process.

Never accept a prewritten phrase

Do not use a phrase supplied on a card in the box, printed in a manual, sent by email, shown by a website, or provided by a seller. Do not continue setup if an application asks you to paste words into a form before the wallet has generated them. Anyone who already knows those words can recreate the wallet and move its funds.

Record it accurately

  • Write each word in the exact order shown by the wallet.
  • Check spelling and numbering while the device asks you to confirm the backup.
  • Use the wallet’s verification step; do not rely on a later transcription check alone.
  • Keep the phrase separate from the device and PIN so one theft does not expose all three.

Some wallets use 24 words; the exact length and backup format depend on the model and setup. Follow the device’s instructions rather than substituting a phrase from another wallet.

7. Store the recovery phrase offline and privately

Ledger’s warning is unambiguous: “Never ever share your 24-word secret recovery phrase, also known as a seed phrase, in any form, with anyone.” Treat the phrase as the wallet. Whoever has it may be able to restore the wallet on a compatible device, while the hardware wallet itself can be replaced.

Safe storage practices

  • Keep the written backup in a location protected from unauthorized access, removal, fire, water, and casual discovery.
  • Consider a durable offline backup format appropriate to your environment, following the wallet maker’s instructions.
  • Limit knowledge of the storage location; do not announce it in messages, photographs, or public posts.
  • Use a second protected copy only when you can secure both locations and understand the additional exposure.

Practices that defeat the backup

  • Do not photograph or scan the words.
  • Do not type them into cloud notes, email, a password manager, a website, or a support ticket.
  • Do not store them in a computer file, even if the file is encrypted, unless you fully understand the added attack surface and the wallet maker explicitly supports that workflow.
  • Do not enter them into a browser extension or application to “verify” a balance.

A legitimate support interaction should never require the complete phrase. A request for it is a reason to stop, close the session, and contact the manufacturer through a verified channel.

8. Plan for loss, damage, and phrase exposure

If the device is lost or destroyed

The recovery phrase can restore access on a compatible replacement wallet. Obtain a genuine replacement through an authorized channel, verify its firmware and clean setup, and choose the restore option. Keep the phrase private while entering it on the replacement device. If the original device might be recovered by someone else and its PIN could be guessed, move funds after restoration and review the old device’s security state.

If the phrase may have been exposed

Assume the wallet is compromised. From a genuine, clean device, initialize a new wallet, generate a new recovery phrase, and transfer funds to addresses controlled by that new wallet. Do this promptly and verify every destination on the trusted screen. Do not “change” a phrase by editing one word; create a completely new wallet and backup.

If the only copy is destroyed

If the wallet still works and you can unlock it, create a new wallet and move the funds, then record the new backup correctly. If the device is unavailable and the only phrase is gone, there may be no recovery path; hardware wallets are designed so the manufacturer cannot reconstruct your private keys.

9. Compare wallets by security controls, not packaging alone

When evaluating models, compare the controls that remain effective after the box is opened. The following questions cover the main differences documented by manufacturers.

Security area Questions to ask Why it matters
Supply-chain and device authentication Is there an authorized purchase route? What seals, serial checks, or authenticity workflow does the manufacturer document? Reduces the chance of receiving a modified or previously accessed device.
Signed firmware and clean installation Does setup install expected firmware, and does the device verify signatures or warn about unofficial software? Helps detect altered software before keys are used.
PIN-attempt protection Are failed attempts limited in hardware, and what happens after the limit? Is the behavior documented for the exact model? Limits offline guessing if the device is stolen.
On-device transaction verification Can you read the destination, amount, asset, network, and fee on the wallet before signing? Protects against a compromised computer changing transaction details.
Backup generation and recovery Does the wallet generate a unique backup during setup, and can a compatible replacement restore it? Determines whether you can recover after loss while keeping the phrase under your control.
Software transparency and updates How are applications distributed, how are updates authenticated, and what warnings appear when verification fails? Makes it easier to distinguish normal maintenance from a malicious prompt.

10. A complete setup procedure

  1. Order: Buy from an official shop, stated marketplace storefront, or authorized reseller. Save the receipt.
  2. Document: Photograph the unopened package and note the model and seller.
  3. Inspect: Check seams, labels, accessories, and model-specific tamper seals. Stop if anything is damaged or altered.
  4. Prepare: Use a trusted computer or phone, install only the manufacturer’s official application, and update that application from its official distribution channel.
  5. Connect: Confirm the application recognizes the expected model and follow the documented setup path.
  6. Verify firmware: Read the firmware-signature result. Stop if the device reports unofficial or unverifiable firmware.
  7. Create the wallet: Choose a new-wallet option; never accept a preconfigured wallet.
  8. Set the PIN: Choose a random, difficult-to-guess four- to six-digit PIN when that range applies to your model, and learn its attempt-limit behavior.
  9. Record the backup: Let the device generate the recovery phrase, write it offline in order, and complete the device’s confirmation test.
  10. Test safely: Receive a small amount, verify the address on the wallet screen, and perform a small send only after you understand the confirmation flow. Never reveal the phrase during testing.

11. Troubleshoot common warning signs

The seal is broken or the box looks reclosed

Do not initialize the wallet. Keep photographs and order records, contact the authorized seller or manufacturer, and request guidance or a replacement. A successful connection does not make a tampered shipment trustworthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The device arrives with firmware or accounts already installed

Stop setup. Trezor’s documented process distributes devices without firmware and installs it during setup. An unexpected preinstalled wallet, phrase, or account is inconsistent with that clean-start model.

The firmware signature check fails

Disconnect the wallet and do not approve any transaction. Reinstall or update only through the official application if the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly provide that recovery path; otherwise, use official support. Never bypass a warning by accepting an unofficial file.

The computer shows one address but the wallet shows another

Reject the transaction. Assume the computer or application may be compromised, verify the receiving address from a trusted source, and investigate before signing anything else.

Someone asks for the recovery phrase

Refuse and end the interaction. No seller, support agent, exchange, or application needs the complete phrase to diagnose an ordinary device problem. If you already disclosed it, treat the wallet as exposed and move funds to a newly generated wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Model-specific points to verify

Trezor devices

Trezor states that devices are distributed without firmware, that setup installs firmware, and that the bootloader checks the firmware signature whenever the device connects. Its documentation also describes model-specific holographic seals, including one over the Trezor Safe 7 USB-C port, and a setup-generated unique wallet backup. Confirm the exact seal and Secure Element or PIN-attempt behavior for the model you own.

Ledger devices

Ledger’s guidance covers damaged tamper-proof seals, random four- to six-digit PIN selection, and the requirement to keep the 24-word secret recovery phrase private. Follow the current setup and update prompts for your exact model, and stop if an application asks for the phrase outside the wallet’s documented recovery flow.

BitBox guidance

BitBox presents a layered approach: keep private keys on the device, verify important transaction details on the device, and check firmware and authenticity. Use those principles as evaluation criteria even when comparing another manufacturer’s interface or terminology.

13. A printable final check

  • Authorized seller confirmed and order record saved.
  • Package photographed before opening.
  • Seals and packaging match the model’s documentation.
  • No unexplained firmware, wallet, account, or recovery phrase is present.
  • Official application used for setup and updates.
  • Firmware signature or authenticity check passed.
  • PIN is random, private, and protected by the model’s documented attempt limits.
  • Destination, amount, asset, network, and fee are verified on the wallet screen before every signature.
  • Recovery phrase was generated by the wallet, written offline, and confirmed on the device.
  • No digital copy or photograph of the phrase exists.
  • A replacement and exposure plan is understood before holding significant funds.
