There is no universal winner between Hao’s Special Works (HSW) and Benny’s Original Motor Works: they serve different purposes, and eligibility depends on the exact car. Choose Benny’s for one of its distinctive conversions and customization options; choose HSW when your vehicle and game platform support its upgrade path. Check the in-game options before committing, because the official sources cited here do not establish comparable current prices or performance gains across the two services.
What each upgrade path is for
| Upgrade path | Best fit | What the official sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Benny’s Original Motor Works | A player seeking a bespoke conversion and its distinctive appearance options. | Rockstar describes options including hydraulics, liveries, interiors, chassis choices, engine details, bespoke wheels, and tire designs. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.30 notes |
| Hao’s Special Works | A player whose exact vehicle is eligible, whose platform supports HSW, and who wants that service’s upgrade path. | Rockstar’s April 6, 2026 Title Update 1.72 notes name the Vapid FMJ MK V as HSW-upgradeable on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and GTAV Enhanced on PC. This example does not establish eligibility for every car or edition. |
These are not interchangeable packages for all cars. A vehicle must have the relevant conversion or upgrade available, and HSW availability also depends on the supported platform and edition.

Which cars can you upgrade?
Benny’s conversions
Rockstar’s original Benny’s list includes the Willard Faction, Declasse Moonbeam, Albany Buccaneer, Declasse Voodoo, Albany Primo, and Vapid Chino. A later Rockstar event announcement also gives examples such as the Bravado Banshee 900R and Pfister Comet Retro Custom. Those are examples from separate announcements, not a complete current roster. See the Benny’s announcement and the April 2020 anniversary announcement.
HSW upgrades
Check the specific vehicle and platform rather than assuming a car can receive HSW because another car can. Rockstar’s current named example is the Vapid FMJ MK V on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and GTAV Enhanced on PC, as listed in its April 6, 2026 Title Update 1.72 notes. A separate Rockstar Chop Shop announcement discusses named HSW vehicles for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; interpret platform claims in the context of the vehicle and update they describe.

How to decide before spending money
- Identify the exact car. Look for its conversion or upgrade option in the relevant in-game workshop. A service’s existence does not mean every car is eligible.
- Check your platform and edition. For HSW, confirm that Rockstar lists the specific vehicle for your version of GTA Online. The FMJ MK V example applies to the platforms and edition named in the April 2026 update notes.
- Choose the result you actually want. If you want Benny’s distinctive conversion and appearance choices, use Benny’s for a listed car. If you want HSW’s upgrade path and the vehicle is supported on your platform, use HSW.
- Review the current in-game price. The official sources cited here do not give a comparable current price set for both services. Do not treat discounts in old event announcements as current prices.
- Compare performance only with comparable evidence. The cited Rockstar sources do not provide a head-to-head performance measure for a complete set of Benny’s and HSW cars. Without a reliable current comparison for the same platform and conditions, there is no supported fastest-car or best-value ranking here.
Vehicles you may not be able to modify
Rockstar Support says players can modify vehicles from Benny’s, Legendary Motorsport, and Southern San Andreas Super Autos, as well as most vehicles obtained from the street or NPCs. Its guidance excludes Pegasus vehicles, certain emergency vehicles, another player’s personal vehicle, and vehicles obtained through glitches or exploits from ordinary modification or sale. This is general modification guidance, not a complete list of Benny’s or HSW eligibility. See Rockstar Support’s vehicle modification and sales guidance.

The cited official sources establish customization categories, example eligible vehicles, and some platform-specific HSW availability. They do not establish comparable current conversion prices or measured performance gains across the two services, so a blanket recommendation based on cost, speed, or value would go beyond the evidence. Rockstar’s line describing HSW as a shop that “hurtles straight into the center of the sun” appears in its Los Santos Drug Wars announcement; it is promotional wording, not a measured performance claim.
