Hand sanitizer is made for hands, not a universal phone cleaner. Don’t assume a gel or wipe is suitable for your phone: use the device maker’s instructions for your exact model. For everyday fingerprints and dirt, power the phone down and gently wipe it with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. If you want to disinfect it, use only a product and method the manufacturer allows.
Does hand sanitizer disinfect a phone?
There is no established, universal answer that hand sanitizer reliably disinfects phone surfaces. CDC guidance recommends sanitizer for hand hygiene: when soap and water are unavailable, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to clean your hands. That threshold is not a phone-cleaning instruction, and it does not establish that a gel is safe for a screen or other phone surfaces. The CDC’s electronics guidance instead says to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the device.

Sanitizer gel and device-approved disinfecting wipes are not interchangeable by default. A phone maker may permit specific wipes or solutions, but that permission applies to the stated device surfaces and method—not to every alcohol product.

- Power it down and disconnect cables. Remove the case and accessories if the manufacturer advises doing so.
- Wipe gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. A microfiber cloth is suitable for routine cleaning. Samsung’s Galaxy guidance allows a small amount of distilled water on the cloth for stubborn dirt.
- Keep liquid off the phone itself. Do not spray or pour liquid onto the device, let moisture enter openings, or submerge the phone.

What to use if you want to disinfect the phone
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact phone model before choosing a disinfectant. The permitted products and application methods differ.
Apple iPhone
Apple permits gentle wiping of exterior surfaces with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, a 75% ethyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, following its precautions. Apple says to avoid bleach and hydrogen peroxide, keep moisture out of openings, avoid submerging the phone, and wipe afterward with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s current US guidance permits certain disinfectants, including alcohol-based solutions containing more than 70% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, as well as a hypochlorous-acid solution at the concentration specified in its guidance. Apply an allowed solution carefully to a microfiber cloth, not directly to the phone. Verify the instructions for your model and region at Samsung Support.

- Liquid damage: Moisture can enter ports and other openings. A water-resistance rating does not mean a phone can be soaked or exposed to arbitrary cleaning chemicals.
- Coating wear or scratches: Apple says the iPhone’s fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating wears over time with normal use; cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish it further or scratch the device.
- Possible effect on water resistance: Samsung warns that frequent, long-term alcohol exposure may affect water resistance.
These are reasons to follow the maker’s approved method rather than treating any alcohol-based product as safe for any phone. CDC’s guidance likewise directs people to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning electronics, including phones and touch screens: CDC household cleaning guidance.
