Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you want the compact early Master Chief story, read Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: First Strike, then Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. Add Halo: The Flood between the first two if you want a prose retelling of Halo: Combat Evolved with additional viewpoints. This is a practical beginner’s route, not an official required order.
Where should a beginner start?
Start with Halo: The Fall of Reach. Halo Studios’ Official Halo Book Guide describes Eric Nylund’s novel as the story of John-117’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, Reach, and events leading toward the discovery of Halo. It also notes that the book preceded Halo: Combat Evolved; the guide lists its release date as October 30, 2001.

From there, choose whether you want to read the first game’s events in novel form. If you do, read The Flood next. If you already know the game and want the shortest route through the connected early Spartan story, skip it and go to First Strike.

1. Halo: The Fall of Reach — begin with Master Chief’s origins
Nylund’s novel introduces John-117 and the SPARTAN-II program while showing the fall of the UNSC stronghold Reach. It establishes the background that leads into the original game, so it gives a new reader useful context without requiring earlier Halo books.

2. Halo: The Flood — optional novelization of the first game
William C. Dietz’s The Flood novelizes Halo: Combat Evolved. Halo Studios describes it as adding perspectives beyond the game’s central viewpoint, including UNSC and Covenant characters. The official guide lists its release date as April 1, 2003. Read it if you want extra scenes and viewpoints around the game’s events; it is not necessary to reread those events if you already know them.
3. Halo: First Strike — the post-game bridge
Nylund’s First Strike follows Master Chief, Cortana, Avery Johnson, and other survivors as they try to return to Earth after Combat Evolved. The historical Halo Story Page FAQ places its events between the first game and the opening of Halo 2. Halo Studios lists the book’s release date as December 2, 2003.

4. Halo: Ghosts of Onyx — widen the Spartan story
Ghosts of Onyx shifts attention to Kurt-051, the SPARTAN-III program, Dr. Halsey, and events centered on Onyx. It continues the wider early-era plot beyond Master Chief’s immediate story. The official guide lists its release date as October 31, 2006.
What is the shortest route?
For three novels, choose The Fall of Reach → First Strike → Ghosts of Onyx. This preserves the major early Spartan and connected-story beats while skipping a book that retells a game you may already know. Insert The Flood after The Fall of Reach if you specifically want the game’s events and added perspectives in prose.

What if I want a different part of Halo lore?
Halo Studios groups its books by story arc and character focus rather than presenting every novel as one compulsory linear sequence. Once you know what interests you, these are distinct optional paths:
- Ancient Forerunners: the Forerunner Saga, in order: Cryptum, Primordium, and Silentium. The official guide places this story 100,000 years ago and connects it to the Forerunners and the Halo Array.
- Postwar politics and conflict: the Kilo-5 trilogy, in order: Glasslands, The Thursday War, and Mortal Dictata. It follows ONI, Sangheili conflict, and the period after the Covenant War.
- Other characters and teams: books such as Contact Harvest and The Cole Protocol, along with the Blue Team, Ferrets, Ace of Spades, and Gray Team stories, offer other entry points based on whose story you want to follow.
The guide lists Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One as the latest book, with a release date of May 26, 2026. Because it is a multi-era anthology rather than a linear starting point, it is not a substitute for the focused early-story route above. Simon & Schuster’s catalog page labels it Book #34 in its series.
