Test the variant briefly before inviting everyone, save a named version, and keep player-interface settings such as FPS and network statistics separate from the match rules.
Start with the mode and map
Open Custom Games, choose the game mode, and select the map before changing individual options. Halo Infinite’s Mode Editor exposes different defaults and controls depending on the mode you select, so editing first and choosing a mode later can change what is available or reset parts of your setup.

Use the mode that matches the activity you actually want to run: a team objective mode for coordinated attacks, a free-for-all mode for individual scoring, or a round-based mode when you want clear resets between engagements. The map matters just as much. A small arena can become chaotic with too many players, while a large map can feel empty if the lobby is undersized. Treat the mode, map and intended player count as one decision rather than tuning them independently.
Build a baseline variant
Before experimenting, create a simple version with the selected mode’s normal rules. Save or bookmark it with a clear name, such as “Arena objective baseline” or “Weekend FFA test.” A stable baseline lets you compare later changes and restore a known-good setup after an experimental session.

Set score and time before fine-tuning
Score and time limits determine the shape of the entire match, so choose them before adjusting weapons or player traits. Decide whether the session should end when a team reaches a target, when a round sequence is complete, or when the clock expires. Then pick a duration that matches the purpose of the lobby.
Match length by session type
| Session goal | Score and time approach | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up or party session | Use a shorter limit and a reachable win target. | Players rotate through maps and modes quickly, and a runaway score does not consume the whole evening. |
| Objective practice | Allow a longer limit so teams can complete several attack and defense cycles. | Players have time to rehearse routes, recover from a failed push and test objective resets. |
| Scrimmage | Use a duration and target that leave room for meaningful comebacks without making an early lead irrelevant. | The result reflects sustained team play rather than a single opening exchange. |
| Free-for-all | Choose a target or clock that keeps players active across the whole map. | A player who falls behind still has a realistic path back into contention. |
These are host-tested editorial choices, not an official universal Halo preset. Write the selected values in the lobby announcement so nobody mistakes a short warm-up for the rules of the main match.
Make teams and player distribution deliberate
Choose free-for-all or team play explicitly, then check how many teams the mode supports and how many players each team will have. Even teams are the most reliable starting point for objective modes. If the lobby has an odd number of players, decide in advance whether one person will spectate, a bot will fill the gap, or the mode should use a free-for-all structure.

Match lobby size to the map
Use the lobby’s maximum-size control to prevent the map from becoming overcrowded. A high player count can overwhelm sightlines and objective spaces on a compact map; a low count can make rotations on a large map feel slow. Do not assume that the mode’s maximum is the ideal number for every map. Test with the player count you expect on match night.
Use observers intentionally
Enable observers when a tournament, coach or organizer needs to watch without joining a team. For an ordinary social session, disabling observer access can reduce confusion about who is actually playing. Tell the group whether observers are enabled before launch so a non-playing slot is not mistaken for a missing player.

Test spawning before inviting the full lobby
Spawning is a documented match-option category and one of the fastest ways to ruin an otherwise sensible ruleset. Run a short test with the intended player count or with bots. Watch where players re-enter the game after death and whether one side is repeatedly forced into the same dangerous lane.
Signs of a bad spawn setup
- A player appears in an opponent’s line of sight before having time to move.
- The same player or team is returned to a corner while the other team controls the surrounding routes.
- Deaths near an objective create a loop in which the losing team cannot safely re-enter play.
- Players spend more time crossing an empty map than contesting the objective.
How to correct it
First reduce the lobby size or change the map if the problem is caused by density. If the map remains suitable, review the mode’s available spawn behavior and run another short test. Make only one significant change at a time; otherwise you will not know whether the improvement came from spawning, team size or a sandbox adjustment. Keep the tested version separate from your baseline until several sessions confirm that it behaves well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesControl weapons, equipment and ammunition
Sandbox controls cover weapon loadouts, weapon placement and ammunition. Decide what the session is trying to measure before granting access to everything. A competitive ruleset may restrict starting weapons and pickups so that positioning, aim and coordinated power-item control matter. A casual lobby may be better with broad access and more frequent experimentation.
Choose a sandbox objective
| Intended experience | Loadouts and pickups | Placement and ammunition focus |
|---|---|---|
| Precision practice | Keep starting options narrow and consistent. | Place only the items needed for the routes or duels being practiced. |
| Power-item control | Limit extra weapons so timing and contesting matter. | Use deliberate placements and predictable ammunition so teams can plan rotations. |
| Sandbox variety | Allow a broad selection of starts and pickups. | Spread items so players can try different approaches without one location deciding every fight. |
| Casual party play | Favor variety over strict symmetry. | Use generous access when the goal is experimentation rather than measurement. |
Whatever you choose, tell players which items are intentionally available. Surprise restrictions feel like technical problems, while announced restrictions become part of the challenge.
Define objectives, scoring and reset behavior
Objective modes can expose settings for captures, rounds, scoring and resets. Explain three things before the match starts: what action earns points, what ends a round or match, and what resets after a score or round transition.

Write a one-sentence rules brief
For example: “Capture scores once per successful return, the round ends at the target, and equipment resets between rounds.” Use wording that matches the options you actually selected. If a mode awards points for more than one action, list each scoring event so players know whether to prioritize eliminations, captures, holds or another objective action.

Verify the behavior in a brief test rather than relying on memory from another mode. A setting that makes sense for one objective may change the pacing or scoring of another.
Change player traits only for a stated purpose
Player-trait controls can affect shields, damage, radar, movement, jump height and clambering. These settings are powerful because they change every encounter, not just a single pickup. Start from the mode’s baseline and change traits only when you can describe the intended result.
Examples of purposeful changes
- Reduce radar information when the session is meant to reward visual awareness and communication.
- Adjust damage or shields for a controlled aim drill, then restore the baseline for normal matches.
- Change movement, jump height or clambering when practicing a route that depends on a specific traversal rule.
Avoid stacking several trait changes at once. If health, movement and radar all change together, players may not be able to identify which rule caused an unexpected advantage. Save a separate variant for each experiment and label the change in its name.
Add bots for practice and uneven lobbies
Custom Games can add bots to either team, set their number and choose their difficulty. Bots are useful when the full group is not available and when a team wants to rehearse routes, defensive positions or objective roles before a human scrimmage.

Use bots as a rehearsal tool
- Set the mode, map, team structure and objective rules first.
- Add enough bots to reproduce the traffic your route is designed for.
- Choose a difficulty that tests the skill being practiced without turning the exercise into a different game.
- Run the route several times, noting where the bot behavior creates pressure and where it leaves a gap.
- Remove the bots and repeat the drill with the intended human lineup before finalizing the variant.
Bots can reveal timing and navigation problems, but they are not a substitute for testing team communication or unpredictable human decisions. Treat a bot-filled result as a rehearsal, not proof that the final lobby is balanced.

Some improvements happen on each player’s settings page rather than in the host’s Mode Editor. Halo’s competitive-settings guidance recommends enabling the FPS counter and network statistics, showing player names, and disabling chromatic aberration, bloom and parallax for a clearer competitive interface.
What these settings change
- FPS statistics: make performance changes visible during a match.
- Network statistics: help players distinguish a connection problem from an in-game rules problem.
- Player names: make team identification and communication easier in a busy fight.
- Chromatic aberration, bloom and parallax: removing these effects can reduce visual distraction for players who prefer a cleaner competitive view.
These are player-side recommendations. They do not alter score, spawning, weapons, objectives or any other rule that the host saves in a custom-game variant. Ask everyone to apply the same interface policy if the session is intended to be a serious comparison.
Use a repeatable host workflow
A fixed workflow prevents late changes from creating hidden differences between sessions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Custom Games. Select the intended mode and map.
- Set the match framework. Choose score, time, free-for-all or team play, team count and the expected lobby size.
- Review spawning. Run a short test and look for spawn traps or unsafe re-entry paths.
- Configure the sandbox. Set starting loadouts, weapon placements, equipment and ammunition for the session’s purpose.
- Define objective behavior. Confirm captures, rounds, scoring events and reset rules.
- Adjust player traits. Change shields, damage, radar or movement only when the change has a stated goal.
- Set lobby controls. Choose access, observer permissions and maximum size.
- Save or bookmark the variant. Use a name that includes the mode and the meaningful rule change.
- Test at realistic capacity. Use the intended players or bots, then correct runaway scoring, weak objectives or poor spawns.
- Announce the active version. Tell players the variant name, map, team structure, win condition and any unusual sandbox or trait rules.
Troubleshoot common custom-match problems
One team wins every round
Check team sizes first, then inspect whether a power item or objective route is too easy to control. Review the score target and time limit as well: a very short match can turn one early advantage into an unrecoverable result. Test a revised sandbox or longer limit separately so you can identify the cause.
Best Value
Players complain that the match is too slow
Confirm that the lobby is not undersized for the map. If the map is appropriate, review objective locations, movement traits and the time limit. A shorter limit may improve a party session, but do not use it to hide a rotation problem that would also affect a longer scrimmage.
Players cannot agree on what scores
Read the mode-specific objective and scoring options again, then run one complete scoring action in a test lobby. Publish the resulting one-sentence rules brief before relaunching. Avoid relying on a familiar mode name; custom options can change the behavior players expect.
Players keep spawning into danger
Reduce density temporarily, test the documented spawn options and watch several consecutive deaths. If the same trap persists, change the map or team arrangement rather than compensating with extreme health or damage traits.
The host’s settings do not match a player’s view
Separate rule differences from interface differences. Confirm the saved variant name and mode rules first. Then ask the player to check FPS and network statistics, player-name display and visual-effect settings on their own device. Player-side interface choices cannot repair an incorrectly configured score, spawn or objective rule.
Keep variants understandable over time
Updates can change menu names or the options exposed by a mode. Re-open saved variants after a game update and verify the settings that matter most: score and time, team distribution, spawning, sandbox access and objective resets. If a label has moved, record the new path in your group’s instructions instead of assuming every player sees the same menu.
Use a naming convention that records the purpose, not just the date: “CTF balanced baseline,” “FFA precision practice” or “Oddball bot rehearsal.” Keep the baseline untouched and duplicate it for experiments. That small habit makes recurring custom nights easier to organize and gives every player a clear reference when a match feels different.
