It gives you a much larger building space, a higher object budget, object scaling, editable materials, modern undo and naming tools, visual scripting, bots, Campaign AI, collaborative editing, reusable scripted modes and broader publishing features.
Halo 5 Forge is still the right answer for a narrower but important group: players who already own Halo 5 on Xbox, creators returning to its established map catalog, and anyone who specifically prefers Halo 5’s original multiplayer sandbox. “Better” depends on whether your priority is technical headroom and new systems or the older game’s feel and legacy content.

Build scale: Infinite leaves more room for ambitious maps
Object budget
Halo Support’s current Forge Overview uses about 1,600 objects per map as the documented Halo 5 comparison point. The same overview describes Halo Infinite as supporting about thousands of objects per map. The wording is intentionally approximate: the official material presents a large-order difference rather than one fixed universal ceiling for every map, update or simulation condition.

That extra headroom matters when a multiplayer space contains more than simple walls and ramps. A creator can spend budget on architectural detail, cover, lighting pieces, gameplay devices and encounter dressing without reaching Halo 5’s documented comparison point as quickly. It does not automatically make a map fun or balanced, but it gives you more room to solve line-of-sight, traversal and atmosphere problems with geometry instead of compromises.
Canvas size
Halo Waypoint’s Forge Fundamentals material described Infinite’s launch canvases as about double the size of Halo 5’s canvases. A larger canvas supports longer sightlines, separated combat districts, vehicle routes and multi-stage objective layouts. It also changes testing: a map that is physically larger needs deliberate spawn placement, travel-time checks and ways to keep players from missing the action.
Halo 5’s smaller canvases can be an advantage for compact arena designs. If your concept depends on constant contact and short rotations, its scale may reduce the amount of unused space you have to police. Infinite gives you the choice to build big; it does not require every map to use the full area.

Memory and simulation headroom
Infinite’s Forge toolset includes a substantially larger asset and memory toolkit than Halo 5’s. The official comparisons emphasize capability rather than a single memory number, so there is no defensible universal percentage to quote. In practical terms, creators should still watch the editor’s budget indicators and test a finished map in the actual custom-game rules they intend to publish. A visually dense scene and a heavily scripted scene can stress different parts of a map.
Building tools: what changes at the workbench
Object scaling and precision
Infinite adds direct object scaling. That is a fundamental difference for custom multiplayer because one source object can fill more roles: a small trim piece can become a large structural beam, or a gameplay prop can be resized to tune cover and movement without searching for a separate asset. Halo 5’s established workflow remains capable, but it does not provide this same scaling option as part of the comparison.
Materials and visual iteration
Infinite adds material swapping and material editing. These tools let a creator revise the visual language of a map after its layout is already working, rather than rebuilding sections solely to change surfaces. Material choices also help teammates identify routes, bases and objective areas during testing.

Undo, naming and organization
Infinite provides solo undo and redo plus object naming. Solo history is especially useful when experimenting with a risky placement or script-linked object: you can reverse your own change without treating every mistake as a full rebuild. Naming makes a large scene easier to audit and is valuable when a Script Brain refers to a specific object or group.
Halo 5 Forge’s appeal is less about newer convenience features and more about familiarity. A creator who has years of experience with its controls, prefabs and catalog may work faster there than a newcomer confronting Infinite’s broader set of systems. Official sources do not publish a controlled comparison of learning curve, performance or reliability, so it would be wrong to claim that one editor is universally easier or more stable.
Logic and scripted modes
Infinite’s Node Graph and Script Brains
Halo Infinite Forge supports visual scripting through Script Brains and the Node Graph. Halo Waypoint’s Season 4 Forge Update Overview specifies a limit of 128 nodes and 512 connections per Script Brain. Those are concrete per-brain limits, not a promise that an entire map can contain unlimited logic. Large projects should divide responsibilities into clearly named brains and test each system independently.
Node-based logic can drive objectives, timers, doors, triggers, score conditions, scripted events and other custom rules without requiring the creator to modify the game’s source code. The important distinction is that Infinite lets you build a mode’s behavior as a system, not merely arrange static geometry.
Forge Mode Creator and Mode Prefabs
CU29 introduced Forge Mode Creator. Halo Waypoint describes it as functionality that lets players script modes in the Node Graph, then save, share and play those experiences. The resulting Mode Prefabs make a scripted ruleset reusable across maps. CU29 also removes mode logic from the map-budget cost, so the budget used for a reusable mode is not charged in the same way as ordinary map objects.
This changes the economics of experimentation. A team can maintain a mode once, apply it to several arenas and publish the mode separately from the map. It is a strong reason to choose Infinite if your goal is a custom game format rather than one bespoke level.

Halo 5’s logic advantage is familiarity
Halo 5 Forge has an established sandbox and a long-running catalog of community work. That maturity can matter more than feature count when your group already knows the editor and wants to recreate or extend a familiar custom game. Infinite’s scripting ceiling is higher in the documented areas, but moving an existing Halo 5 concept is not automatically a one-click conversion; the two editors should be treated as separate production environments.
AI and PvE: Infinite is the clear technical choice
Bots for multiplayer testing
Halo Infinite Forge supports bots, letting creators exercise routes and objective spaces without a full human lobby. Halo Support lists a limit of up to 32 AI units at one time. That limit is a simultaneous-unit figure, so a scenario with many scripted spawns still needs careful testing of when units enter and leave play.
Bots are useful for more than filling empty slots. They expose sightline problems, unreachable objectives and spawn traps while a map is still changing. Human playtests remain necessary for balance and communication, but bot support lowers the cost of finding obvious structural problems.
Campaign AI variants and behavior controls
Halo Waypoint’s Season 5 Forge Overview lists 43 Campaign AI variants. Infinite also provides configurable behavior options and allegiance controls, enabling encounters that are not limited to standard player-versus-player layouts. You can design a multiplayer map with a PvE route, neutral threats, defensive waves or a mixed objective where teams must decide whether to fight opponents, AI or both.
The combination of AI variants, navigation requirements and scripting expands the design space substantially. It also increases the test burden: AI needs valid movement routes, sensible spawn timing and enough space to behave as intended. A map can be technically complete yet play poorly if AI units block objectives or overwhelm a route.
What Halo 5 cannot match here
The supplied official comparisons do not give Halo 5 an equivalent figure for Campaign AI variants or a comparable Infinite-style AI toolkit. For creators whose defining requirement is bots or authored PvE encounters, Infinite is therefore the safer selection based on documented capability.

Collaboration, publishing and matchmaking
Co-Forge work
Infinite supports co-Forge collaborators with permissions, allowing a team to work on a shared project instead of passing one file between individuals. Version history provides a way to review or restore earlier states when a change damages a layout or script. Use clear object names and a shared editing convention before a large team starts; collaboration features do not replace project organization.

Infinite’s publishing pipeline covers maps, modes and prefabs. A creator can distribute a map, a reusable Mode Prefab or both, then let other players discover the work through the community browser. This is broader than sharing a finished map file because the ruleset itself can become a reusable component.
Custom Games and matchmaking
Published Forge work can be played through Custom Games, where the host chooses the map and rules for a private or organized session. Halo Support also states that some Forge maps entered matchmaking on April 22, 2025. “Some” is the important qualification: publication does not mean every community map is automatically placed in a public playlist.
Halo 5 retains value through its established community catalog and the audience that still seeks its original multiplayer feel. If your group already has favorite Halo 5 maps and a regular lobby, that existing network can outweigh Infinite’s newer discovery tools.

Infinite’s entry point
Halo Support states: “The entire Forge experience is included for free as part of the free-to-play Halo Infinite multiplayer experience.” You do not need to purchase Halo Infinite as a separate campaign product simply to access Forge through free-to-play multiplayer. Availability can still vary by platform and account requirements, so check the current official listing before installing.
Halo 5’s route
Halo 5 remains primarily console-focused. The separate Halo 5: Forge PC editor is an exception, not evidence that the full Halo 5 console experience is available identically on every platform. Readers choosing this route should verify current platform support, edition and retailer inventory; the physical product commonly associated with the console path is Halo 5: Guardians for Xbox One.

Because platform listings and store availability change, do not treat an old disc, digital entitlement or PC listing as a guarantee of every online feature. Confirm the edition and region that match the console or PC you intend to use.
Which Forge fits your project?
Choose Infinite when your project needs systems
- You want a map with substantially more geometry and a larger playable canvas.
- You need object scaling, editable materials, naming and solo undo/redo for a large production.
- Your design depends on Node Graph logic, Script Brains or a reusable Mode Prefab.
- You want bots, Campaign AI variants or mixed PvP/PvE encounters.
- You are working with co-creators and need permissions, version history and browser-based discovery.
- You hope a polished Forge map can be considered for the matchmaking ecosystem, while understanding that inclusion is selective.
Choose Halo 5 when continuity is the priority
- You already own Halo 5 on Xbox and your intended players are on that platform.
- Your group’s favorite maps, customs or techniques are tied to Halo 5’s established catalog.
- You specifically want Halo 5’s original multiplayer feel rather than Infinite’s newer systems.
- Your design is a compact arena that does not require Infinite’s larger canvas or AI toolkit.
Use this decision test
- Define the non-negotiable feature. If it is bots, Campaign AI, a reusable scripted mode or collaborative editing, start with Infinite.
- Measure the map concept. Sketch the number of combat zones, vehicle lanes, objectives and AI areas. A concept that needs broad separation benefits from Infinite’s larger canvas.
- Check the player group. Existing Xbox ownership and a stable Halo 5 community can be more important than a feature checklist.
- Prototype the risky system first. In Infinite, test the Script Brain or AI behavior before decorating the entire map. In Halo 5, validate the core arena flow in the familiar sandbox before investing in polish.
- Test in the final mode. Run the map through Custom Games with the intended rules, player count and AI load. Budget and behavior can change when a finished scene is played rather than edited.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming more objects automatically means a better map
Infinite’s larger budget can encourage decoration that obscures routes or harms readability. Build spawn logic, objectives and sightlines first; spend the remaining budget on details that help players understand the space.
Treating a Script Brain limit as a whole-project limit
The documented 128-node and 512-connection figures apply to one Script Brain. Keep separate systems modular, name them clearly and test their interactions rather than pushing every rule into one graph.
Designing AI without a navigation plan
AI variants and behavior controls do not guarantee good encounters. Provide routes that support the intended behavior, avoid placing spawns directly on objectives and test simultaneous units against the documented limit of up to 32.
Confusing publication with matchmaking placement
Infinite supports publishing and browsing, and official support records some Forge maps entering matchmaking on April 22, 2025. A published map still needs to be discovered and played through the appropriate channel; it is not automatically a public-playlist map.
Choosing by feature list while ignoring the players
A technically richer editor cannot compensate for a group that cannot access it or does not want its gameplay feel. Confirm platform, edition and the audience’s preferred Halo sandbox before committing to a long build.
Final recommendation
For a new custom-multiplayer project, start in Halo Infinite Forge. Its scale, editing tools, visual scripting, AI support, reusable modes and collaboration features cover more modern design goals than Halo 5 Forge. Select Halo 5 when the project is intentionally tied to Halo 5’s gameplay identity, existing Xbox ownership or legacy community catalog. That is not a failure of Infinite; it is a decision to preserve a particular Halo sandbox rather than maximize editor capability.
