Halls of Torment: Which Character Should You Unlock First?

Unlock the Archer first if you want a clear early progression goal: a published unlock guide lists reaching the 26-minute mark in Haunted Caverns as the requirement. That makes Archer a practical first target—not a claim that the character is the strongest or best for every player. Check the in-game quest text if it differs from the guide.

Why the Archer is a practical first unlock

The Archer’s reported requirement is a survival milestone in Haunted Caverns, the starting hall. You can work toward it in an ordinary run without first needing to defeat a named boss or reach a later hall. The 26-minute condition comes from Pro Game Guides’ character unlock guide; because unlock conditions can change, treat the current in-game quest as authoritative if its wording differs.

This recommendation is about the route to the unlock, not character power. The Steam store listing describes “Several distinct characters allowing for many different play styles.” Choose a different goal if another character’s play style interests you more.

How the early unlock routes compare

The same guide lists several alternatives. These examples show why Archer is a straightforward first objective; they are not a complete or guaranteed-current roster database.

Character Requirement reported by Pro Game Guides What the route involves
Archer Reach the 26-minute mark in Haunted Caverns. Survive to a stated milestone in the starting hall.
Cleric Defeat the Lich in Haunted Caverns. Defeat a boss rather than reach a survival milestone.
Exterminator Defeat 1,000 enemies in one Ember Grounds run. The guide says Ember Grounds opens after defeating the Imp Chieftain in Haunted Caverns. Progress to a later hall, then meet a one-run kill target.
Warlock Defeat the Wyrm Queen in Ember Grounds. Reach a later hall and defeat its boss.
Shieldmaiden and Sorceress The guide places these unlocks in Forgotten Viaduct and describes boss or kill progression. Later-hall progress, rather than a simple starting-hall milestone.

When another character may be the better first goal

  • You want a boss challenge: The guide’s Cleric route is defeating the Lich in Haunted Caverns.
  • You prefer a specific play style: Character variety is part of the game’s design, so it is reasonable to pursue the character that sounds most appealing rather than treating unlock order as a power ranking.
  • You are already progressing through later halls: A later-hall objective may fit your current run goals better than returning to pursue Archer first.

Verify requirements in your game version

The developer continues to publish updates, and requirements may differ by version or platform. The Steam listing currently enumerates 11 playable characters, but that count can change and the cited listing excerpt does not distinguish base-game access from DLC availability. For the requirement that applies to your save, open the in-game quest board and follow its current wording.

For update context, see the developer’s Halls of Torment Steam news. The character-specific requirements above are attributed to the secondary guide and should not override a conflicting live quest.
