There is no single best Halls of Torment build for every run. A useful build matches a character and mark to a specific hall, difficulty, and objective, then makes abilities, traits, and equipment reinforce one another. This guide gives you a practical way to make those choices without treating unverified or outdated loadouts as universal recommendations.
What makes a Halls of Torment build?
A run’s build brings together your character traits, abilities, and items. The official Steam game listing describes these as the tools for creating a powerful build during each run; unique items can also be sent to the overworld and used to customize later runs.

The options make one-size-fits-all advice especially unreliable. Steam’s published inventory lists 11 playable characters and character marks, 74 abilities and ability upgrades, 60 unique items plus 240 higher-rarity variants, 25 blessings, 30 artifacts, and more than 1,000 traits. These figures describe the listed content, not what is unlocked at the start or how strong any choice is.

Think of a build as a plan: the character and mark set its starting direction, abilities provide its damage or utility, traits develop that engine, and equipment can strengthen it or compensate for a weakness. The right plan depends on what you need to accomplish.
#1 Best Overall
Choose the run’s goal before picking upgrades
First decide what success means for the run. A build intended to defeat a boss may need reliable focused damage and enough defense to stay alive; one aimed at surviving longer may value recovery and safe positioning over rapid kills. Your hall, mode, and difficulty also affect the balance between offense and durability.
- For kill speed: Favor abilities and traits that work together to deliver damage consistently. Consider whether the plan can handle dangerous enemies without leaving you exposed.
- For survival: Give defense and recovery a clear role. A damage-heavy setup that cannot withstand pressure may fail before its damage matters.
- For a specific challenge: Read the objective and any special rules first. A build’s value changes when the goal or stage conditions change.
Official developer previews have discussed alternative completion rules, including timer- and kill-count-based modes, as well as weekly challenges with predetermined stage, mode, and artifacts. Those previews are not confirmation that the features are in the stable game today; check the live game’s menus and current patch information before building around them.
Build around character and mark
Start with the character and mark you plan to play, then ask what kind of run they support. The official listing describes distinct character playstyles and synergies across abilities, traits, and items, but it does not rank characters or establish one strongest setup.

This keeps recommendations specific rather than implying they work for every character.
- Set the target. Record the hall, difficulty, mode, and objective you want to handle.
- Identify the build’s engine. Explain in plain terms how its selected abilities create damage, control space, or help you endure a run.
- Choose support. Seek traits that amplify or enable that engine, then choose equipment that strengthens it or addresses its weak points.
If you are still learning a character, favor a plan whose important parts you can actually access. A build that depends on an unavailable item, trait, or upgrade is not useful for that run; choose an unlocked substitute that serves the same role rather than assuming the exact loadout is mandatory.
Make abilities, traits, and equipment work together
Abilities: define the damage pattern
Choose abilities for what they contribute to the plan, not simply because each looks powerful alone. Consider whether their effects complement one another and whether the resulting damage pattern fits the target: clearing groups, handling dangerous enemies, or maintaining pressure while you move.
Traits: strengthen the engine
As you select traits, look for effects that improve the abilities or survival approach your build actually uses. A trait that does not support the plan may be less valuable than one that makes its central strength more reliable. Since trait availability and selection can vary, treat the build as a set of roles to fill rather than a fixed list that every run must reproduce.
Rank #3
Equipment: improve strengths or cover gaps
Use equipment to reinforce the build’s main purpose or address a problem it cannot solve through abilities and traits alone. For example, a plan built around high damage may need defensive support, while a cautious survival plan may need more kill speed to meet its objective. Check item effects and available unlocks in the game rather than relying on a generic item recommendation detached from your character and target.

Compare builds on the same terms
When deciding between two setups, compare them against the same hall, mode, difficulty, and success condition. Otherwise, a build suited to surviving a long run can look worse than a fast-kill setup simply because the goal differs.
| Comparison axis | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Damage and synergy | Do the abilities and traits reinforce a coherent damage pattern? |
| Survival and recovery | Can the setup withstand the pressure expected in this run? |
| Mobility and positioning | Does it require precise movement or particular positioning to work? |
| Unlock dependence | Does it rely on a specific trait, item, or upgrade you may not have? |
| Objective fit | Does it serve the chosen stage, mode, difficulty, and completion goal? |
| Difficulty ceiling | How well does it hold up as the challenge increases, including Agony? |
Steam Community hosts guides framed around Agony, ability synergy, and game mechanics, but community builds are player advice rather than independently validated performance rankings. They can also become dated as the game changes. Use them as starting points, then check whether their assumptions match your version and objective.

Account for updates when using a build guide
Version matters. On October 1, 2026, developer Chasing Carrots announced that The Lost Archives would arrive on October 22, 2026, and said the experimental branch would receive base-game and Boglands changes before release. As of this guide’s October 7, 2026 check, those were upcoming plans, not verified stable-branch mechanics. See the developer’s Steam news for announcements, and confirm the current patch and branch in the game before relying on a version-sensitive build.
A separate March 17, 2026 preview described work in progress for Fragile and Affliction: universal damage amplification, uncapped permanent stacks with diminishing returns, and Affliction spreading to nearby enemies. The preview does not establish that those mechanics shipped unchanged. Do not build around those details unless the current game or release notes confirm them.
Recommended Free Tools
The same DLC announcement introduced the Inquisitor, whose concept uses Judgement stacks and execution strikes, and the Blood Apostle, who spends health for destructive power through a Sacrifice system. These are announced character concepts, not evidence for established builds. Treat advice for them separately from existing-character recommendations and verify their actual mechanics after release.
Where to find and assess build ideas
The Steam Community guides page is a place to discover player-written guides, including Agony and synergy-focused approaches. Before following one, check its date, the character and mark, the hall and difficulty, its objective, and whether it depends on particular unlocks. A guide that omits those assumptions may still offer useful ideas, but it cannot establish a best build for your run.
For current mechanics, prioritize the in-game descriptions and official announcements over older community recommendations. Steam’s listing is useful for the stated build systems and published content inventory; developer news is useful for announced changes, but a preview should not be mistaken for a stable release.
