Hallowarrior turns a familiar besieged-home setup into a Halloween-set survival horror story. Milly Shapiro plays Pumpkin, a woman who believes she is the last person alive after a plague ends humanity. When scavengers arrive at her isolated, Halloween-decorated home, her rituals and loneliness collide with a fight to survive.
What is Hallowarrior about?
Written and directed by Ben Sottak, Hallowarrior is an 80-minute US horror-thriller and Sottak’s feature debut, according to the Tribeca Festival’s 2026 listing. Pumpkin keeps Halloween traditions alive in her secluded home after a humanity-ending plague. The rituals give shape to a life defined by isolation; then a group of scavengers appears, turning an encounter at her door into a home-invasion struggle.

The central tension is not simply whether Pumpkin can repel the intruders. Her fear of being alone is bound up with the possibility of harming other people, giving the survival premise an emotional cost as well as physical danger. The film’s Halloween setting and trap-and-defense conceit supply the genre framework, while Pumpkin’s response to violence makes the conflict more personal.
Is Hallowarrior like Home Alone?
In premise, there is an evident resemblance: someone inside a home faces intruders and must find ways to fight back. Eye for Film reviewer Jennie Kermode acknowledges the comparison but stresses that the tone is different. Here the setup belongs to horror, not a family comedy: the violence is consequential, and Pumpkin’s distress about killing and losing the possibility of companionship complicates the fun of watching a defender outwit attackers.

The SLASH Filmfestival program likewise describes it as a festive blend of Home Alone and survival horror, highlighting the confrontation between Shapiro and Sossamon. That comparison is useful for the besieged-home idea, but it should not be mistaken for a claim that the films share a genre or tone.
How does the film’s approach land?
Kermode’s review praises the efficient early character work and pacing, and describes the ride as fun, while noting that Pumpkin’s emotional unease gives the survival tension added weight. That is one critic’s response rather than a broad consensus or audience rating.

Tribeca’s festival description calls the film “lean, mean and visceral” and presents Shapiro’s performance as the anchor of a love letter to Halloween and an underdog story. Those are festival-program judgments, not measured audience results. The most grounded way to approach the film is as a compact horror feature balancing Halloween spectacle, a familiar home-invasion shape and a protagonist whose fight back is emotionally difficult.
Who stars in Hallowarrior?
Milly Shapiro stars as Pumpkin and Shannyn Sossamon plays Thalia. Ajani Russell and AJ Bowen are also among the announced cast. The story’s central clash places Shapiro’s isolated Halloween-keeper opposite Sossamon in the violent encounter that follows the scavengers’ arrival.
