A current BIS hallmark on gold jewellery has three parts: the BIS logo, a purity mark shown in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. You can use the BIS Care app’s Verify HUID feature to check the code. A magnifier can help you read a tiny stamp, but it cannot verify the HUID or prove the item’s actual purity.
What does a BIS hallmark mean?
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) describes hallmarking as the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in an article. For a buyer, the hallmark identifies the gold grade stated for the jewellery; it is not a guarantee that every item of gold jewellery everywhere is subject to the same current requirement.

What are the three marks, and what is HUID?
Since HUID was introduced on 1 July 2021, BIS describes the hallmark on gold jewellery as three marks:
- BIS logo: identifies the BIS hallmark.
- Purity mark: states caratage and fineness, such as 22K and 916.
- HUID: a six-character alphanumeric code unique to the hallmarked item and traceable through BIS’s system.
HUID is an identifier, not another way of writing the gold grade. BIS explains HUID in its Hallmarking FAQs.

How do I check a gold hallmark and HUID number?
- Find the marks on the article. Look for the BIS logo, purity mark and six-character HUID. The stamp may be very small; a 10x jeweller’s loupe can help you read it. BIS’s consumer FAQ says a jeweller should have a magnifying glass of at least 10x to show the hallmark.
- Verify the HUID in BIS Care. Open the official BIS Care app and select Verify HUID. BIS says the feature lets consumers verify HUID-marked hallmarked jewellery and can be used before purchase. Details are on the BIS Care App page and BIS Consumer Protection page.
- Check every item and component. For a pair, inspect each piece. Check detachable components separately rather than assuming one hallmark covers the whole item. BIS’s Common Consumer Hallmarking FAQs address marking on pairs and detachable parts.
- Seek a purity test if you remain concerned. Ask about consumer testing at a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. BIS says a consumer can have jewellery or a sample tested on a chargeable basis and receive an assay report identifying marks on the article. See BIS Consumer Protection.
What can a loupe, BIS Care and an assay test each establish?

The three methods serve different purposes: viewing the stamp, verifying its code and testing the metal are not interchangeable.

BIS states that if hallmarked jewellery is found to have less purity than marked, the customer is entitled to compensation calculated at two times the amount of the purity shortfall for the article’s weight, plus testing charges. This is BIS’s stated compensation rule; consult its current consumer-protection guidance for complaint steps and how the rule applies to an individual case.

Does every gold article in India have to be hallmarked?
Do not assume so. Mandatory hallmarking coverage includes amendments and exemptions, and the applicable requirements can depend on current rules and location. BIS’s order index lists amendments dated 2 March 2026, 28 April 2026 and 3 August 2026; it was last updated 1 September 2026. Check the current BIS Mandatory Hallmarking Order for district coverage and exemptions before relying on a general claim. BIS consumer information lists exemptions that include articles under two grams, some special-category jewellery and jewellers below a specified annual-turnover threshold; confirm the current details in the order.
