A hair transplant may be an option for some people with permanent pattern hair loss, but candidacy depends on the cause of hair loss, healthy donor hair and the ability of the recipient area to grow hair. The procedure moves follicles; it does not prevent surrounding native hair from thinning. FUE and FUT both leave scars, recovery takes care, and visible regrowth unfolds over many months. A qualified clinician should assess your hair loss and discuss whether surgery and its likely trade-offs suit you.
Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant?
A transplant is most often considered for permanent, familial-pattern hair loss. It is not usually suitable for other causes, such as alopecia areata. A dermatologist or other qualified clinician should first identify why your hair is thinning: the diagnosis affects whether surgery is appropriate and whether hair loss should be treated or stabilized before an operation.

Candidacy depends on several factors, not a universal age or graft-count cutoff:
- Donor supply: There must be enough healthy hair in a donor area to move.
- Recipient area: The thinning or bald area must be capable of growing transplanted hair.
- Pattern and progression: The clinician should consider the cause and extent of loss, including whether native hair is likely to keep thinning.
- Health and expectations: General health, scalp condition and a realistic understanding of likely coverage and density matter.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains the importance of healthy donor hair and a recipient area that can grow hair in its guidance on hair transplants. Cleveland Clinic notes that surgery is commonly considered after hair loss has been stabilized with medical treatment. Whether that applies to you is a clinical decision, not a do-it-yourself rule.

What is the difference between FUE and FUT?
Both methods move hair follicles from a donor area, usually at the back of the head, to a thinning or bald area. Their main differences are how grafts are harvested, the scars they leave and how much hair is shaved.
| Method | How donor hair is taken | Typical scar pattern | Shaving noted by NHS |
|---|---|---|---|
| FUE (follicular unit extraction) | Individual grafts are removed one by one. | Multiple small scars, usually less noticeable than a FUT line; not scar-free. | The back of the head is shaved. |
| FUT (follicular unit transplantation) | A strip of scalp is removed and closed with stitches. | A linear scar at the donor site, which may show if hair is very short. | Usually only the donor-strip area is trimmed. |
The NHS describes these approaches and their aftercare in its hair transplant guidance, last reviewed on 29 September 2023. Neither technique is right for everyone. Discuss scar visibility at your preferred hair length, the surgeon’s experience with the proposed method, recovery instructions and how a plan would account for future hair loss. The best choice depends on the person and the clinical assessment.
Does a hair transplant hurt?
During the operation, local anaesthetic is commonly used, sometimes with sedation. NHS guidance says patients are typically awake but should not feel pain during the procedure. The anaesthesia plan and individual experience can differ, so ask the clinic what to expect and how discomfort will be managed.

- 【26° Wedge Pillow for Facial Surgery Recovery Pillow】This back sleeping training pillow holds a calibrated 26° incline (15.75" x 15" x 7.5") so you stay on your back through the night. Sleeping face-up instead of side-lying keeps cheek and chest off the pillow — the everyday habit behind sleep lines and chest wrinkles. The wedge elevates head, neck and shoulders for more comfortable rest, works as an anti wrinkle pillow, and keeps acid down for reflux sleepers.
- 【Upgraded Comfort: Re-Contoured for Head, Neck & Shoulders】The sleeping surface is re-contoured with a deeper center cradle and a softer shoulder edge, following your spine's natural curve so pressure spreads instead of concentrating on one point. The result is the upgrade you feel on night one: less neck and upper-back strain, less tossing, and stable elevated support whether you are recovering, sleeping upright, or simply training yourself off side sleeping. Facelift/rhinoplasty recovery pillow helps train your body to maintain a healthy back-sleeping position, ensuring comfort and support throughout the night.

It is the post surgery pillow you can set up the same day it arrives — full rebound takes under 10 minutes — and it comes with 2 washable cooling covers.
Afterward, aching or throbbing, tenderness, tightness, swelling, numbness and scabbing can occur. MedlinePlus notes that the scalp may be tender during recovery and that pain medicine may be needed. Do not assume recovery will be painless; ask your surgeon which symptoms are expected and what to do if they worsen.
Will a hair transplant leave a scar?
Yes. FUT leaves a linear donor-site scar; FUE leaves multiple small scars where individual grafts were removed. FUE is not scarless, and neither method guarantees scars will be invisible. How noticeable scars are depends on healing, technique and hair length. Ask the clinician to explain what the proposed method may look like with the hairstyle you plan to wear.
What is recovery like?
Follow your surgeon’s instructions, which take precedence over general timelines. NHS patient guidance gives these typical milestones:
Rank #3
- Height-Adjustable Design: Post face lift surgery pillow features two height-adjustable sections (5.1 inches and 1.96 inches). Users can freely select the appropriate height based on recovery needs, precisely meeting the requirement for elevated head positioning after surgery
- Memory Foam: The back sleeper pillow has soft memory foam in the upper layer and 35D high-density foam in the lower layer. This combination effectively alleviates neck soreness, relaxes muscles, and corrects sleeping posture, thereby enhancing sleep comfort and quality
- Facial Surgery Recovery Pillow: The beauty pillow effectively elevates your head and face, helping you maintain a comfortable, stable supine sleeping position. Designed for various facial surgeries, it prevents facial compression during sleep and promotes faster healing
- Ergonomic Design: Back Sleeping Training Pillow features an ergonomic wedge design that contours to the body's curves, providing support for the head, neck, and shoulders. It helps maintain a natural, relaxed posture, reduces facial pressure, and helps prevent sleep wrinkles
- Vacuum Packaging: Our wedge pillow is shipped in vacuum packaging. Please allow 48-72 hours after opening the package for it to return to its original shape. The outer cover is removable and can be washed and reused
- You may need one to two weeks away from work.
- A bandage may be removed after two to five days.
- Grafts are not secure in the first two weeks, so handle the area carefully. The NHS says gentle hand washing around the grafts may begin around day six.
- Stitches, if used, may be removed after 10 to 14 days.
- Exercise may need to be reduced during the first month to help reduce scarring.
These are general NHS timings, not instructions for every operation. Contact the clinic promptly if you develop severe pain or unexpected symptoms.

Regrowth is gradual, and transplanted hairs may shed before new growth appears. NHS guidance says shedding often happens after a few weeks, new hair usually starts appearing after about four months, and full results should be visible after 10 to 18 months. Cleveland Clinic describes regrowth beginning over the course of months and full results taking up to a year. These are broad patient-guidance timelines, not promises; the sources differ, and individual progress varies.

Transplanted follicles may keep growing after they have healed, but that does not mean your overall hairstyle or density will stay unchanged. Hair outside the transplanted area can continue to thin, altering the appearance over time. Some people may need additional sessions or touch-ups. A long-term plan should take likely future hair loss into account, rather than focusing only on the initial transplant.

What are the risks?
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, an allergic reaction to anaesthetic, graft failure, noticeable scarring, poor graft growth, numbness, pain and an unnatural appearance. Short-term tightness, aching, swelling and scabbing can also occur. The guidance cited here does not establish a reliable numerical risk rate, so ask the surgeon about the risks for your procedure and personal health.
How do I choose a hair-transplant provider?
Before agreeing to surgery, ask the clinician about their qualifications and experience, how many procedures they have performed, their complication history, why they recommend a particular method and what follow-up is available if something goes wrong. Ask how the plan addresses your pattern of loss and what results are realistic for your donor supply.
