H.264 vs H.265 for Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Streams

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a pre-recorded video sent to YouTube Live, either H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) can work if your encoder or relay supports it. Choose using YouTube’s live-ingest settings for your target resolution and frame rate—not its separate recommendations for regular video uploads. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for H.265 at 1080p30, and 17 Mbps or 12 Mbps respectively at 1080p60. Those are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of how the video will look or which codec viewers will receive.

Does YouTube Live accept H.264 and H.265?

Yes. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) as supported ingest codecs, along with AV1. For a pre-recorded live stream, the relevant encoding is the stream your playback software, relay, or hardware encoder sends to YouTube—not necessarily the codec used in the original recording.

This is different from uploading a finished video to YouTube as a standard video. YouTube’s separate upload recommendations specify H.264; do not substitute those upload settings for live-ingest settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its video upload encoding recommendations.

What bitrate should you use?

Use the row matching your outgoing codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current live-ingest table. Selected recommendations from YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 are below. They are platform configuration recommendations, not results of a controlled visual-quality test.

Live resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended ingest bitrate H.264 recommended ingest bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps

These are recommended rates for the incoming live stream. YouTube also publishes minimum rates, and the complete table includes other resolutions and frame rates; consult it rather than estimating an unlisted combination. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Follow the live encoder page for the exact current requirements and supported protocol options.

How to choose between H.264 and H.265

Check the encoder or relay first

YouTube’s acceptance of a codec does not mean every playback tool can output it. Confirm that your software or hardware encoder supports the codec and protocol combination you intend to send. This matters especially when a system reads a pre-recorded file and re-encodes it for live ingest: the source file’s codec does not establish what the outgoing stream will use.

Match the target format and available bandwidth

Pick the resolution and frame rate you actually plan to stream, then use YouTube’s corresponding codec row. The recommended rate differs by codec and format; the examples above are not interchangeable settings. YouTube advises leaving network headroom, so ensure your available upstream capacity can accommodate the stream rather than running at its limit. Its live encoder guidance links to network setup advice.

Do not assume H.265 guarantees a better-looking stream

YouTube’s guidance gives different recommended ingest bitrates for H.264 and H.265, but it does not establish a universal, controlled quality comparison for every source, encoder, or pre-recorded-stream workflow. Treat the recommendations as settings to configure and verify, not proof that one codec will always look better at a particular bitrate.

Remember that ingest is not viewer playback

YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. The codec you send is therefore not a promise that each viewer will receive that same codec. See YouTube Help’s explanation of live transcoding.

Can you stream HDR to YouTube Live with H.265?

Yes, but HDR is a distinct workflow rather than a checkbox implied by choosing HEVC. YouTube’s dedicated HDR guidance calls for HEVC/H.265, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color, and HLS output, with specific transport and playlist requirements. YouTube’s general live-settings page recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR, but use the dedicated HDR live-streaming guidance for implementation details; the standard bitrate examples above are not a complete HDR setup recipe.

Practical setup and verification

  1. Choose the output format. Decide the resolution, frame rate, and whether the stream is SDR or HDR.
  2. Confirm end-to-end compatibility. Check that the playback or relay software and encoder can output your chosen codec and protocol to YouTube Live. Do not infer this from YouTube’s codec support alone.
  3. Set live ingest parameters. In the encoder, use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For HDR, follow the dedicated HEVC/HLS instructions, including 10-bit BT.2020.
  4. Check the connection. Confirm stable upstream capacity with headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, as YouTube advises.
  5. Test the actual relay. Start a test or scheduled stream using the intended file and settings, then monitor the encoder and YouTube’s live preview for connection errors, buffering, or unexpected output. A compatible codec on paper does not verify the complete path.

Pre-recorded content, copyright, and stream continuity

Encoding compatibility does not grant rights to the footage, music, or other material in a recording. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies. A pre-recorded file can also contain visual or audio issues that are hard to catch from encoder settings alone, so review the source and monitor the live output.

If your aim is a 24/7 loop, the choice between codecs is only one part of the setup: the playback system must keep sending a valid stream. With a local computer, the stream depends on that computer, its power, and its internet connection remaining available.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that should keep pre-recorded video live, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it does not re-encode the upload. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
