Gyre vs OBS on a Low-Cost PC for a 24/7 YouTube Stream in India

For one continuous stream of pre-recorded video, OBS is cheaper to start if you already own a PC that can encode reliably; Gyre is the better fit if you do not want a computer running at home. OBS needs your PC, power and upload connection available throughout the broadcast. Gyre runs the stream from its cloud service, but you must upload your videos and pay for a plan after its trial. If buying a PC just for this stream, compare its full purchase and electricity costs with Gyre’s current subscription and storage limits—and with StreamNeo, which offers cloud looping at one flat price per slot, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, and a free first day.

What matters most: upfront cost, ongoing cost and attention

The choice is not simply which software costs less. A local OBS setup shifts costs and responsibility toward your home: the PC must stay on, and your power and internet connection must hold up. A cloud service shifts the continuous encoding and delivery off your PC, but adds a recurring charge, file-upload work and plan limits.

Factor OBS on a local PC Gyre StreamNeo
Where the stream runs Your PC encodes and sends the stream to YouTube. Gyre’s servers send the stream after you upload videos to its storage. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube.
What must stay available during the stream PC, power and reliable upload connection. No dedicated PC needs to stay on; you still need internet to upload files and manage the service. No home computer or home connection needs to stay on for playback.
Best fit You already have an encoding-capable computer, a stable connection and time to monitor and recover the stream. You want cloud delivery of pre-recorded files and accept its subscription and storage limits. You want always-on cloud looping, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

None of these routes establishes guaranteed uninterrupted operation for every setup. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health; power, connectivity, software and platform issues can still interrupt a broadcast.

Is OBS viable on a low-cost PC?

It may be, but a processor name or low purchase price cannot establish that a particular PC will sustain your intended stream. OBS says encoding demands vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Its basic requirements are not a guarantee of streaming capability; its System Requirements page is dated August 25, 2021, so check it for current operating-system support before choosing hardware.

Prefer a supported hardware encoder when available

OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync Video. It generally recommends hardware encoding because it moves work away from the CPU to a specialized component. Encoder generation matters: older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. A refurbished desktop with compatible integrated graphics or a mini PC with Intel Quick Sync may be worth investigating, but neither category guarantees stable 24/7 performance. Check the exact processor’s encoder support, cooling, ports, network interface and suitability for sustained operation, then test the stream profile you plan to use.

OBS recommends using its Auto-Configuration Wizard to find settings suited to your system. Treat its result as a starting point, not proof that a machine can run unattended for days.

Test before relying on it

  1. Install OBS on the candidate PC and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard.
  2. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity; test a representative video rather than an idle desktop.
  3. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while OBS runs.
  4. Watch for dropped frames, encoding lag, overheating, unexpected restarts and connection instability over a meaningful period. The test cannot guarantee future uptime, but it can expose a configuration that is already struggling.

Set up OBS and YouTube for a pre-recorded video stream

For OBS, the video is played locally and encoded by the PC while it is sent to YouTube. Exact menu labels may vary by OBS version. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery.

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s livestream guidance for a verified channel includes having no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before planning a launch.
  2. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live, and set up the stream. In the Live Control Room, locate the stream key and server details. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Configure OBS output. In OBS, open Settings > Output and choose the encoder your PC supports. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Select RTMPS if available and use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  4. Set up the playback scene. Add the video as a media source in OBS and configure looping if you want it to repeat. Check that the source remains available after a restart, and verify audio levels and playback before going live.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube and enter or connect the stream key according to the available option. Start the stream in OBS, then verify the incoming signal and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
  6. Monitor and prepare recovery. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS logs. If the PC, OBS or network stops, the broadcast may end; have a way to restart it. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can mean a broken stream.

Choose a bitrate and leave upload headroom

YouTube’s current live settings table gives these H.264 figures:

Output profile Minimum upload Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. The recommended bitrate is a baseline, not a guarantee: other household traffic, Wi-Fi variation, ISP congestion and network interruptions can affect delivery. Measure sustained upload capacity under realistic conditions and avoid using nearly all of it for the stream. YouTube transcodes streams for different viewer devices and network conditions.

Gyre’s help documentation says videos must be uploaded to Gyre storage. Its plan choice therefore depends on both the stream allowance and how much video you need to keep there. The file-preparation examples in its help material should not override YouTube’s current live-ingest settings: check the stream profile in YouTube Live Control Room.

Compare the real cost in India

A PC that you already own can make OBS inexpensive to start, but the recurring electricity cost and your time maintaining it still matter. If you would buy a PC solely for this job, include its purchase cost and any backup-power equipment as well. A UPS can help with some local power interruptions, but it cannot fix an ISP outage; required capacity depends on the measured PC-and-router load and the runtime you want.

For a local PC, estimate monthly electricity use with this calculation:

Average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 × your electricity rate per kWh

This is a calculation method, not an India-wide cost estimate. Use the PC’s measured average draw during the actual workload and your own tariff. Add internet cost only if it is incremental, and account for backup power. For Gyre, compare the current subscription, the storage and stream limits you need, taxes, currency conversion and any upload or management costs. The available evidence does not establish a representative Indian electricity tariff, a tested PC’s wattage or a verified total cost for either route.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube is not receiving a signal: Confirm OBS is streaming, the selected YouTube stream key is current, and the correct server/key are configured. If you regenerate a key, update OBS before restarting.
  • Dropped frames or an unstable stream: Check sustained upload speed, reduce competing network traffic, use a wired connection where practical, and lower the bitrate if it is too close to available upload capacity. Preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Encoding lag or high CPU use: Reduce resolution, frame rate or scene complexity, or use a supported hardware encoder. Re-test the exact workload; a compatible PC’s basic specifications do not guarantee streaming capability.
  • The stream stops after a power or internet interruption: OBS depends on local power and connectivity. Restart the PC or connection as needed, then reconnect OBS and verify the signal in Live Control Room. A UPS may help with a brief power loss but not a connectivity failure.
  • A cloud upload or playlist will not work: Check that the file has finished uploading, fits the service’s supported format and your plan’s storage allowance, and is selected in the playlist. Confirm the current provider instructions rather than assuming every video file is accepted.

Copyright and monetization are separate from uptime

A technically stable stream is not automatically permitted or monetizable. Use video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and content. A continuous loop does not remove those obligations. Before scheduling a long-running broadcast, check current YouTube Studio notices and account eligibility. Gyre’s vendor materials describe API-based stream creation and monetization controls, but those details may change; verify current requirements in YouTube Studio and official YouTube documentation.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose OBS if you already have a suitable PC, can provide reliable power and upload capacity, want local control over scenes, and are willing to monitor and recover the stream.
  • Choose Gyre if you want cloud delivery for uploaded pre-recorded files and its current storage and stream limits fit your needs at the subscription cost.
  • Consider StreamNeo first among cloud looping options if you want a single always-on YouTube stream with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatic recovery and a no-card first day.
