GUNDAM VERSUS and Extreme VS are related third-person arena fighters built around 2-on-2 mobile-suit battles; GUNDAM EVOLUTION is a separate first-person, 6-on-6 objective shooter. Choose Extreme VS for the established arcade-style partner format, GUNDAM VERSUS for that style in a PlayStation 4 package with more than 90 units, or Evolution if you want hero-shooter objectives, unit abilities and free-to-play progression. The names overlap, but the formats, controls and team responsibilities are fundamentally different.
The difference in one table

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extreme VS | Third-person, arcade-style mobile-suit battle action | 2 versus 2 | Large named mobile-suit roster; mastery comes from movement, attacks, resource management and partner timing | The official overview identifies the series and its 2018 release entry; it does not establish one universal current platform list |
| GUNDAM VERSUS | Home-console arena fighter derived from the 2v2 formula | 2 versus 2 | More than 90 units from 17 Gundam works, worldwide matchmaking, destructible environments, Blaze Gear and Lightning Gear | PlayStation 4 |
| GUNDAM EVOLUTION | First-person hero shooter with objective modes | 6 versus 6 | 12-unit starting roster; further units and customization tied to Capital Points earned in play or EVO Coins bought with real money | Announced for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One in 2022, with regional differences |

What Extreme VS actually is
Bandai Namco Studios describes Extreme VS as a battle-action game in which players control mobile suits from the Mobile Suit Gundam series in 2-on-2 battles. That short description captures the defining idea: each player fights as one half of a pair, and success depends on the pair’s combined decisions rather than on four isolated duels.

The partner is part of your weapon set
An Extreme VS match is built around creating favorable exchanges with your teammate. One suit can pressure an opponent while the other takes a safer angle, interrupts an attack or prepares a follow-up. You must also decide when to spend limited movement and attack resources, when to disengage, and when to rescue a partner who is under pressure. A mechanically strong player who ignores the other half of the team can lose to a less flashy pair that rotates positions and attacks together.

Why the series feels like an arcade fighter
The presentation is fast and visually dense, with mobile suits crossing an arena, launching ranged attacks and converting openings into short attack sequences. The important skills are spatial awareness, movement discipline, recognizing an opponent’s commitment and coordinating the next exchange. Those priorities differ from a conventional fighting game with one character on each side and from a shooter in which a six-person squad controls lanes toward an objective.
Extreme VS is a family of games, not one single release
“Extreme VS” can refer to the competitive lineage rather than a single edition. The official overview has a 2018 release entry for the series, while related products such as Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme VS Maxi Boost ON were also released for PlayStation 4. Treat the subtitle and platform as part of the product name when shopping; a listing for one Extreme VS edition is not automatically the same game as GUNDAM VERSUS.
What GUNDAM VERSUS adds on PlayStation 4
GUNDAM VERSUS is the distinct PlayStation 4 home-console title. Its official product page lists more than 90 playable units drawn from 17 different Gundam works, worldwide online matchmaking, environmental destruction and landscape deformation. It also introduces two named Burst Systems: Blaze Gear and Lightning Gear.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A broad crossover roster
The “more than 90 units” figure is tied to the 2017 product page and counts units from 17 Gundam works. That makes the game attractive to players who want a single console package spanning multiple eras and series. A large roster does not mean every suit plays alike: your practical choice still affects range, mobility, attack timing and the way you support a partner. Expect to spend time learning a small group of suits before trying to understand the entire selection.
What the Burst Systems change
Blaze Gear and Lightning Gear are the release’s two Burst Systems. They are not merely cosmetic loadout labels; they give you different ways to shape a critical moment in a match. Selecting a system is therefore part of your match plan: consider whether you need a close-range conversion, a safer way to create pressure or a tool that complements your partner’s role. The exact value depends on the suit and situation, so the sensible approach is to test one system at a time rather than switching constantly without learning its timing.

Destruction is part of the arena
Environmental destruction and landscape deformation make the battlefield less static than a featureless training room. A damaged section of terrain can change sight lines and movement routes. When learning a stage, note which structures disappear, which attacks can use cover and where a partner can retreat without becoming isolated. These changes matter because a 2v2 game is decided by positioning as much as by raw damage.
What “Gundam Versus PS4” means for buyers
“Gundam Versus PS4” identifies this home-console product, not the entire Extreme VS family and not GUNDAM EVOLUTION. The documented platform is PlayStation 4. Availability, price, new-versus-used condition and online population vary by region and date, so verify the live PlayStation listing and any current publisher notice before assuming that matchmaking or a particular edition is available.
How GUNDAM EVOLUTION differs
GUNDAM EVOLUTION is the franchise’s first free-to-play hero shooter according to its launch announcement. The match structure is 6v6, the camera is first person, and teams fight over objectives rather than winning through the partner-centered arena exchanges of Extreme VS and GUNDAM VERSUS.
Three objective modes
- Point Capture: teams contest a designated area and try to secure it.
- Domination: control shifts between objective locations, rewarding coordinated movement and timely rotations.
- Destruction: one side attacks a target while the other defends it.
The launch materials name all three modes. They create a different decision cycle from an arena fighter: you are judging respawns, routes, cover, target priority and the timing of a team push, not only the next opening in a duel.
Unit abilities replace a single universal moveset
The European product page explains that each playable unit has its own offensive, defensive and/or supportive skills. In practice, your contribution may be damage, protection, mobility, disruption or enabling a teammate’s attack. A unit’s role is therefore tied to the current objective and team composition. You should not pick solely by the anime it comes from; learn what its abilities do for the group and whether your team has the tools needed to attack or hold the objective.

Roster and service progression
The 2022 launch announcement specified a starting roster of 12 units. It also described additional mobile suits and customization unlocks connected to Capital Points earned through play or EVO Coins purchased with real money. That is a service-game progression model, unlike a paid console release whose central value is the included roster and modes. The presence of a currency system does not make Evolution a larger version of Versus; it reflects a different business and content structure.
Platforms were announced, but availability is time-sensitive
The launch announcement listed PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, while noting regional platform differences. Those are announcement-era details from 2022, not a guarantee of live service status in 2026. Check your local platform store, account requirements and a current publisher communication before planning a purchase or a group session.
Why the names cause confusion
All three games use the Gundam license and feature recognizable mobile suits, so store searches can make them appear interchangeable. They are not.
- Extreme VS names the arcade-style 2v2 competitive foundation.
- GUNDAM VERSUS is a specific PlayStation 4 home title built around that kind of 2v2 combat.
- GUNDAM EVOLUTION is a separate first-person 6v6 shooter with objectives, unit abilities and service progression.
Think of Extreme VS and GUNDAM VERSUS as close relatives in format, while Evolution is a different genre using the same fictional universe. Owning one does not teach you every important skill in the others: partner timing and arena movement do not transfer directly to first-person objective play, and shooter positioning does not replace the execution and resource management expected in 2v2 battles.
Combat and teamwork: 2v2 versus 6v6
| Question | Extreme VS / GUNDAM VERSUS | GUNDAM EVOLUTION |
|---|---|---|
| What does a teammate represent? | Your single partner is a constant part of every exchange. You cover one another, combine pressure and manage the match’s shared rhythm. | One of five teammates in a squad. Roles can divide across attack, defense, support and objective control. |
| What is the main space? | An arena where movement, attack range and partner distance determine the next engagement. | First-person lanes, cover routes and objective areas that teams must enter, defend or retake. |
| What causes a lost fight? | Being caught out of position, spending resources at the wrong time or failing to synchronize with the partner. | Entering an objective without team support, losing a rotation, misusing a unit ability or allowing the enemy to regroup. |
| How do you improve? | Learn movement, attack confirms, resource timing, matchups and partner communication. | Learn your unit’s abilities, sight lines, objective timings, counters and team compositions. |
The smaller team in Extreme VS does not mean less complexity. It means each decision is more visible: one mistimed attack or missed rescue can leave your partner alone. Evolution spreads responsibility across six players, but that adds communication and coordination demands around objectives.

Which game is best for competitive 2v2?
Choose Extreme VS if “competitive” means the established 2-on-2 arcade format itself. Its identity is built around partner-dependent combat, fast arena exchanges and learning a deep mobile-suit roster. This is the most direct answer for players asking for 2v2 rather than simply a Gundam-themed multiplayer game.
Choose GUNDAM VERSUS if you want that style specifically on PlayStation 4 and value a documented home package with more than 90 units from 17 Gundam works, worldwide matchmaking, destructible environments and two Burst Systems. It is the practical console choice among the products described here, subject to current regional availability.
Do not choose GUNDAM EVOLUTION for 2v2. Its six-player teams, first-person view and objective modes answer a different question. It may be the better fit for a group that wants a hero shooter, but it cannot provide the partner-based 2v2 format.

You prefer first-person shooting and objective play
GUNDAM EVOLUTION is the relevant choice. Its three objective modes and unit-specific offensive, defensive and supportive abilities create the structure of a hero shooter rather than an arena fighter. Be prepared to learn both your chosen unit and the team’s overall plan.
You want a free-to-play model
Evolution was announced as free to play and used Capital Points earned in play alongside EVO Coins purchased with real money for additional units and customization. Extreme VS and GUNDAM VERSUS are presented as game releases rather than the same service model. Review the current store listing for any changes to access, currencies or required subscriptions.
How to start without learning bad habits
Starting in Extreme VS or GUNDAM VERSUS
- Pick one mobile suit. Choose a unit whose range and movement feel comfortable instead of changing after every loss.
- Learn the arena. Identify cover, open lanes and retreat routes, including how environmental destruction can alter them in GUNDAM VERSUS.
- Watch your partner. Keep enough distance to help without standing in the same attack, and avoid beginning a long commitment when your partner cannot cover you.
- Practice resource timing. Treat movement and attack resources as tools for creating or escaping an exchange, not as something to spend continuously.
- Add a Burst System deliberately. In GUNDAM VERSUS, test Blaze Gear and Lightning Gear separately and record which situations each one improves.
- Review losses by decision. Ask whether you were isolated, attacked without a partner, misread the opponent’s range or used a resource too early.
Starting in GUNDAM EVOLUTION
- Learn one unit’s complete kit. Know which ability deals damage, which protects or moves you and which helps teammates.
- Play the objective, not only eliminations. A high personal score cannot compensate for abandoning the capture, domination or destruction task.
- Use cover and routes. First-person sight lines reward players who approach with a plan instead of crossing open ground repeatedly.
- Coordinate a push. Move when teammates are ready, focus the same target and use supportive abilities before the fight is already lost.
- Adapt to the mode. Point Capture, Domination and Destruction require different rotations and defensive priorities.
- Check progression costs before committing money. Capital Points and EVO Coins serve different purposes; confirm the current in-game terms and regional pricing.
Common buying and matchmaking mistakes
Mistaking the title for the format
A search result containing “Gundam” and “Versus” does not tell you whether you found a 2v2 arena game or a different product. Read the subtitle, platform and mode description. The words “6v6,” “first-person” and “objective” identify Evolution; “2-on-2” identifies the Extreme VS-style format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming every platform has the same access
GUNDAM VERSUS is documented for PlayStation 4. Evolution’s 2022 announcement covered five platform families but also noted regional differences. Neither statement proves current storefront or server availability in every country. Verify before purchasing, especially if your goal is online matchmaking.
Expecting shooter controls to transfer directly
Evolution’s first-person view and ability-driven kit encourage lane control, cover use and objective timing. Extreme VS and GUNDAM VERSUS demand arena spacing, movement management and partner synchronization. A player experienced in one format should expect a genuine learning period in the other.
Buying for the roster without checking the service model
GUNDAM VERSUS offers a documented large included roster for a console release. Evolution began with 12 units and tied additional content and customization to earned or purchased currencies. Decide whether you prefer a defined package or an evolving service structure before you spend money.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you specifically need two-player teams? Pick Extreme VS or GUNDAM VERSUS.
- Do you need PlayStation 4 support? GUNDAM VERSUS is the title documented for that console; Evolution was also announced for PS4, but verify current regional access.
- Do you want first-person shooting? Pick Evolution, not the Versus-style arena games.
- Do you want a 90-plus-unit crossover roster in one home release? GUNDAM VERSUS is the documented match.
- Do you want objective modes named Point Capture, Domination and Destruction? Those belong to Evolution.
- Do you prefer progression through play and optional purchases? Evolution uses Capital Points and EVO Coins as described at launch.
- Do you value the classic partner-dependent competitive structure above everything else? Start with Extreme VS.
Final verdict
“Gundam Versus” is not another name for every Extreme VS game, and neither is the same as GUNDAM EVOLUTION. Extreme VS is the 2v2 arcade-style foundation. GUNDAM VERSUS is a specific PlayStation 4 home title that packages that approach with more than 90 units from 17 works, worldwide matchmaking, destructible environments and Blaze Gear and Lightning Gear. Evolution is the separate 6v6 first-person shooter, defined by Point Capture, Domination and Destruction objectives, unit-specific abilities and service-game progression.
