What is Guide Dogs Premium Care?
Premium Care is one tier of Guide Dogs Pet Insurance, an Australian policy covering cats and dogs. The insurer’s corporate disclosures identify The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd as issuer, Greenstone Financial Services Pty Ltd as distributor and promoter, Royal Guide Dogs Australia as its authorized representative, and PetSure (Australia) Pty Ltd as administrator. The insurer says the product supports Guide Dogs Australia’s work; that is the insurer’s statement, not an independent assessment of charitable impact. Guide Dogs Pet Insurance
The insurer’s current comparison lists a $20,000 annual benefit, reimbursement of up to 85% of eligible costs, and a choice of $0 or $50 excess. These are plan-level headline figures: exclusions, eligibility rules, sub-limits and the selected policy’s Certificate of Insurance determine what is actually payable. Guide Dogs plan comparison

What is covered?
Illness and specified accidental injury
Illness cover includes examples such as cancer treatment; skin, eye and ear conditions; foreign-object ingestion; gastrointestinal problems; hereditary and congenital conditions; intervertebral disc disease (IVDD); and tick paralysis. Coverage remains subject to exclusions and the policy’s terms. The illness waiting period is 30 days from the start of the first policy period. Guide Dogs FAQ
The injury benefit is called “Specified Accidental Injury,” not all-accident cover. The insurer lists events including motor-vehicle incidents, burns or electrocution, insect or arachnid bite reactions, fractures, snake-bite toxicity, traumatic ligament or tendon injuries, bite or fight wound abscesses, and lacerations or abrasions caused by external violence. Check the policy wording to see whether an incident fits a listed event. Guide Dogs FAQ

Waiting periods matter
Illness cover has a 30-day waiting period. Cruciate ligament conditions have a six-month waiting period, which the insurer says may be waived on application. A condition that develops during a waiting period may be treated as pre-existing under the policy terms. Guide Dogs plan comparison Guide Dogs FAQ
What isn’t covered?
The insurer’s FAQ identifies pre-existing conditions, dental procedures, fractured teeth, routine or preventive treatment unless an optional Routine Care contribution applies, some elective procedures, and breeding or obstetrics among key exclusions. The policy booklet also excludes pet accessories such as pill poppers, crates, bedding and collars. Read the definitions and exclusions in the policy wording; an item being mentioned as a possible treatment does not make its full cost eligible. Guide Dogs FAQ Guide Dogs policy documents
Hereditary and congenital conditions may qualify only where there were no noticeable signs, symptoms or abnormalities before the first policy period or during an applicable waiting period. Ongoing chronic, recurring or lifelong conditions may continue to be covered while the policy is renewed without a break and the product remains available, subject to annual limits and the pre-existing-condition rules. Are there benefits towards preventative treatment?
Premium Care alone does not broadly cover routine or preventive care. The optional Routine Care benefit provides limited contributions in specified categories. The insurer’s comparison lists $15 for a heartworm test or blood screen, $15 for a FeLV/FIV test or urinalysis, and $50 per year for one eligible routine treatment. Guide Dogs plan comparison
Depending on the current schedule, eligible treatments may include desexing, microchipping, heartworm preventative medication, teeth cleaning, dental illness treatment, vaccinations or health checks, council registration, prescription diets, alternative therapies, dew claw removal, cremation or burial, behavioural therapy, obedience training, and flea, tick or worm control. The list and limits are not a promise that all these costs can be claimed together: check the current schedule and which option appears on your Certificate of Insurance. Guide Dogs plan comparison

Can my pets still visit their usual vet?
The insurer’s plan comparison says customers can use any registered vet in Australia. Confirm that your clinic meets the policy’s registration requirements, and keep invoices and clinical records needed for a claim. Guide Dogs plan comparison
Does the liability benefit cover every dog?
No. The advertised third-party liability benefit of up to $1 million is restricted to Registered Guide Dogs. The insurer defines a Registered Guide Dog as a dog supplied by a Guide Dogs Australia state member organization to a person for mobility support. The benefit is not listed for ordinary pet dogs or cats. Guide Dogs plan comparison Guide Dogs FAQ

How to compare a quote with your pet’s needs
- Check eligibility first. Confirm your pet’s age, species and other details against the current quote and policy documents.
- Compare the full cost-sharing structure. Look at the annual benefit, reimbursement percentage and excess together, not as isolated headline numbers.
- Check the conditions most likely to affect a claim. Review the specified accidental-injury events, illness and cruciate waiting periods, and the cruciate, consultation, tick-paralysis and emergency-boarding limits.
- Read exclusions against your pet’s history. Disclose relevant symptoms and prior conditions, and check the rules for dental care, preventive treatment, hereditary conditions and ongoing conditions.
- Price Routine Care separately. Compare its additional cost with the limited contributions and treatment categories on your Certificate of Insurance.
- Use the policy documents, not a headline summary, to decide. The insurer’s document page says: “Any advice provided is general only and does not take into account your individual objectives, financial situation or needs.” It asks readers to consider the PDS before purchase.
