The Guardian announced the planned closure on May 14, then reported on July 1 that the site had shut down.
Why did Guardian Soulmates close?
The Guardian Soulmates team pointed to two connected changes: a more crowded dating market and the cost of adapting its service to compete.

Dating had moved toward apps
When Soulmates launched online in July 2004, the team said, the online dating landscape was different. By 2020, there were many dating apps and other ways to meet people, often free and quick. The Guardian Soulmates team described that shift in its closure message.
Adapting required investment the operators would not make
The team said staying competitive would require substantial investment in new technology and a new operating model, and concluded that this was not viable. In the closure message published by The Guardian on July 1, 2020, the team put it this way: “To keep up with the changing times we’d need to invest heavily in new technology and develop a new way of operating, and it’s just not viable.”

That is the operators’ stated business rationale. The closure announcement did not provide financial accounts, subscriber trends, quantified losses, or an independently audited explanation, so claims that a particular financial problem or membership decline caused the closure are not established by that statement.
What was Guardian Soulmates?
It was a premium dating service associated with The Guardian and aimed at single readers looking for like-minded people. Some members valued the possibility of meeting people who also read the newspaper and might share their outlook; that was one reader’s personal impression, not a verified description of every member.

The service’s closure message said it had helped introduce “thousands” of people, without giving an audited total. The Guardian later collected accounts from couples who met through Soulmates and went on to build relationships and families. Those are individual stories, not a measured success rate.
When did Guardian Soulmates shut down?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| July 2004 | Guardian Soulmates launched online, according to the service’s closure statement. |
| May 14, 2020 | The Guardian announced that the service would close in June. |
| June 2020 | The planned closure took place. |
| July 1, 2020 | The Guardian reported that the site had shut down. |
The service’s team described its run as “more than 15 years.” The Guardian’s May closure announcement and its July report document the announcement and shutdown.

Did Guardian Soulmates have a successor?
The closure coverage does not identify a successor endorsed by the Guardian, and it does not establish which dating service is best today. Soulmates is no longer a live service; a recommendation for a current alternative would need up-to-date information about availability, geography, cost, matching approach, and privacy and safety features.
