Vice City or San Andreas: the short answer
| Question | Choose Vice City | Choose San Andreas |
|---|---|---|
| What is the story shape? | A non-linear, character-driven rise in which you arrive in a city and can take it over as you choose. | Carl Johnson returns to Los Santos amid gang trouble, drugs and corruption. |
| How large is the commitment? | A concentrated experience built around one city identity. | A broad journey through three detailed cities and an entire state, according to Take-Two’s release material. |
| Who is the best fit? | Someone who values atmosphere, a clear sense of place and a manageable first run. | Someone who wants exploration, longer travel and a larger sandbox. |
| Which modern package contains it? | Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. | Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. |
If you are completely undecided, Vice City is the safer first game because its scope is easier to absorb. Pick San Andreas instead when the appeal of a bigger map and a longer, systems-heavy commitment is the reason you are returning to classic GTA.
What makes Vice City the focused first game?
A city with a single, strong identity
Rockstar describes Vice City as a non-linear, character-driven narrative in which you arrive in a town “brimming with delights and degradation” and are given the opportunity to take it over as you choose. That description explains why the game works well as an introduction: the setting remains the organizing idea. You are learning the game while following a crime rise that is anchored to one recognizable urban world rather than constantly changing regions.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The result is not a smaller idea; it is a more concentrated one. Streets, districts and the city’s atmosphere all support the same central fantasy. A new player can spend time learning how the open-ended structure works without also having to learn a much larger geography and a long-distance travel routine.
Why its pacing suits a first run
“Focused” does not mean linear. The official description explicitly emphasizes non-linear gameplay, so you still have discretion over how you approach the takeover. The useful distinction is the amount of surrounding space you must keep in your head. In Vice City, the city itself is the reference point. You can make progress, pause to explore and return to the main story without the scale becoming the main challenge.
Choose this game when you want your first classic GTA session to answer one question clearly: can you learn the series’ open-ended crime-story format and enjoy its period identity without committing to an expansive journey? Vice City is designed around that compact proposition.

A wider premise
Rockstar’s official description places Carl Johnson in Los Santos, “a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.” Take-Two’s release material expands the geographic promise: San Andreas includes three detailed cities and an entire state to roam. That combination changes how the game feels before you even consider individual missions. The setting is not one city viewed from several angles; it is a state-scale route through multiple urban environments.
That breadth creates more opportunities to choose where to go and how to spend time. It also asks you to remember more places, plan longer trips and accept that the game’s payoff is spread across a larger journey. If the excitement of classic GTA comes from seeing what is over the next horizon, San Andreas gives you more horizon.
The cost of choosing more world
Scale adds commitment. Take-Two’s 2013 announcement for the mobile version advertised “over 70 hours of gameplay.” Treat that number as publisher-provided guidance for that edition, not a guaranteed completion time on every platform or for every player. Your actual time will depend on how much of the optional content you pursue, how often you explore and whether you are trying to finish the main story or see everything.
San Andreas is therefore the better first choice only when its size sounds motivating rather than intimidating. If a large map, longer travel and a substantial time investment are exactly what you want, its scale is an advantage. If you would rather understand the classic formula quickly, that same scale can make the opening hours feel less direct.

Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
Story, atmosphere and the kind of attention each game rewards
Vice City rewards mood and continuity
Vice City’s character-driven structure puts the crime rise and the city’s identity in the foreground. The experience is easiest to appreciate when you want a consistent tone and a clear sense of place from one session to the next. You can still play non-linearly, but the surrounding world keeps pointing back to the same central urban setting.
This makes Vice City a strong recommendation for players returning to GTA after many years, players who have limited evening time, or anyone who prefers a campaign that can be mentally resumed without reconstructing a large travel map first.
San Andreas rewards curiosity and endurance
San Andreas asks you to hold a broader story and geography in mind. Carl Johnson’s return to Los Santos is framed by gang trouble, drugs and corruption, while the state-wide structure gives the narrative room to move between cities and regions. The game suits players who like to let a campaign occupy them for a long time and who enjoy the feeling that a new destination is part of the reward.
Its ambition was explicit. In a Take-Two announcement, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies said the team hoped San Andreas would “redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values.” You should read that as a statement of design ambition, not as a promise that every modern player will prefer the larger game.
How world scale changes your first-play experience
Navigation and memory
With Vice City, the main challenge is learning one dense, strongly characterized city. With San Andreas, you must also build a mental model of how the three cities and the surrounding state relate to one another. The second game can feel more adventurous because travel itself becomes part of the rhythm, but it can also interrupt a short play session if you have only a few minutes.
Ask yourself how you normally play open-world games:
- If you prefer a defined home base and frequent returns to familiar districts, Vice City is the more comfortable starting point.
- If you enjoy crossing a large world simply to see what changes, San Andreas makes that curiosity central to the experience.
- If you often pause a game for weeks, Vice City’s concentrated setting may be easier to re-enter.
- If you like long projects that remain available for months, San Andreas gives you more room to spread out.
Session length
Neither game requires you to finish in one sitting, but they support different session patterns. Vice City can deliver a coherent feeling of progress during shorter sessions because the city remains the constant frame. San Andreas is more rewarding when you are willing to let a session include travel, exploration and the possibility that progress will take you somewhere new.

Which game is better for a new player?
“New player” can mean two different things: new to classic GTA, or new to open-world games in general. For someone new to classic GTA, Vice City is usually the less demanding orientation. Its one-city identity reduces the amount of geography you need to learn while you become comfortable with non-linear progress.

For an experienced open-world player who has never played these older GTA games, San Andreas may be the more satisfying first purchase. Familiarity with broad maps and long campaigns removes much of the intimidation that its scope can create. You can appreciate the ambition immediately instead of wondering whether the game is asking too much of your time.
Use this practical test:
- Choose Vice City if your first priority is finishing a focused crime story and absorbing a distinct period atmosphere.
- Choose San Andreas if your first priority is discovering a larger world with multiple cities and more opportunities to roam.
- If both sound equally appealing, begin with Vice City, then carry your familiarity with the formula into San Andreas.
What you get in the Definitive Edition
The modern bundle
Rockstar’s 2021 announcement presents Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition as a package containing GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. For these two games, that means you can buy one modern collection and select the title that matches your preferred scope rather than finding separate legacy releases.
The announcement lists modern GTA V-inspired controls, higher-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and weather, and increased draw distance. Those changes target the friction points a new player notices when moving from current games to older releases: control expectations, visual clarity and how far the world remains visible.
What the upgrade does not settle
Updated presentation does not make the two games identical. The underlying distinction remains: Vice City is organized around one city and a concentrated takeover story, while San Andreas is organized around Los Santos, two additional detailed cities and an entire state. The Definitive Edition changes how you access and see the games; it does not remove the reason to choose one over the other.
Do not assume every platform has identical performance or feature parity. Rockstar’s announcement describes the package and its enhancements, but your experience can still vary with platform, region, current patch and display setup. Read the live store description for the device you own before committing.
Platform and buying guidance
Physical editions listed by Rockstar
The 2021 announcement recorded physical editions for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Those are the physical formats you can use as the documented baseline when looking for a boxed copy. A PS5 owner should verify the current PlayStation Store listing and compatibility details rather than assuming that a PS4 disc or download has identical support on every console configuration.

Digital availability
Rockstar also announced digital availability through major platform stores and the Rockstar Games Launcher. Because storefront availability, regional listings and pricing can change, search for the exact collection name on your platform and confirm that Vice City and San Andreas are included in the edition you are viewing.
| Where you plan to play | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | Whether you want the physical version or the current digital listing, plus the edition name and any platform-specific compatibility notes. |
| Nintendo Switch | That the listing is the Definitive Edition collection and that the displayed regional price and download requirements suit your console. |
| PlayStation 4 | Whether you are buying the recorded physical format or the current digital listing, and which patches are available for your region. |
| PlayStation 5 | The live store’s compatibility and edition details; the documented physical release is for PlayStation 4. |
| PC | The current Rockstar Games Launcher listing, system requirements, edition contents and patch state. |
How to avoid a mismatched purchase
- Search the complete title, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, rather than relying on a shortened product name.
- Open the platform-specific page and confirm that Vice City and San Andreas are both listed in the included games.
- Check whether the offer is physical or digital, then verify the region, language information and any download requirement.
- Look at the current patch or update notes available for your platform. Do not infer identical performance from another console’s listing.
- Compare the displayed price and stock at the moment you buy; neither is fixed by the original 2021 announcement.
A decision framework for common player profiles
“I want the shortest path into classic GTA”
Pick Vice City. Its single-city structure gives you a clear mental map and lets the character-driven takeover remain the central thread. You are choosing concentration over geographic breadth.
Recommended Free Tools
“I want the biggest world available in this pair”
Pick San Andreas. The documented scope is three detailed cities plus an entire state, so the game is built for players who want travel and exploration to be major parts of the commitment.
“I care more about atmosphere than map size”
Pick Vice City. The recommendation follows from its strongly defined city identity and focused crime-story shape, not from a claim that San Andreas lacks atmosphere.
“I want a long-term game to keep returning to”
Pick San Andreas if you actively enjoy a campaign that can occupy you for a long time. Take-Two’s “over 70 hours” wording is mobile-version publisher guidance, so use it as an indication of scale rather than a personal timetable.
“I cannot decide and want both eventually”
Play Vice City first, then San Andreas. The first game introduces the classic open-ended structure in a concentrated setting; the second lets you apply that familiarity to a much larger world. This order also gives each game a distinct role instead of making you compare every early hour directly.

How to approach your first hour in either game
Before launching Vice City
- Decide whether you want to follow the character-driven takeover at a steady pace or explore the city between major objectives.
- Give yourself enough uninterrupted time to learn the city’s layout; its value comes from recognizing how the same setting supports different choices.
- Use the modern control option if the Definitive Edition offers a choice that matches your current GTA habits, but remember that the game’s structure remains its original non-linear design.
Before launching San Andreas
- Expect the opening to be part of a longer journey rather than a compact tour.
- Keep the three-city-and-state scope in mind so travel does not feel like wasted time; movement is part of what you selected.
- Set a realistic stopping point for each session. The publisher’s “over 70 hours” figure describes the mobile edition and is not a universal completion promise.
Common mistakes when choosing
Buying based only on the word “classic”
Both games are classic GTA titles, but “classic” does not identify the right scale for you. Decide whether you want one city with a concentrated identity or a state-wide journey with three cities before you compare prices.
Best Value
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
Treating a publisher time estimate as a requirement
San Andreas does not require every player to spend more than 70 hours. That figure came from Take-Two’s 2013 mobile announcement and should be treated as edition-specific guidance. Your route, exploration habits and completion goal determine your own duration.
Assuming the Definitive Edition erases all differences
The package gives both games updated controls and visual/environmental enhancements, but it does not turn Vice City into a state-wide sandbox or reduce San Andreas to one city. Choose the game first; use the edition to decide how you want to play it today.
Assuming platform parity
Rockstar’s announcement names several physical and digital formats, but it does not establish that every platform has identical performance or features. Verify the exact listing, compatibility information and current patch state for your hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecommended play order
For most first-time players, the best order is Vice City, then San Andreas. Vice City gives you a manageable introduction to the non-linear, character-driven crime format. San Andreas follows with a broader challenge: Carl Johnson’s Los Santos story, three detailed cities and an entire state to explore.
Reverse the order only when scale is your primary reason for buying. If you already know that the larger world is what will keep you engaged, start with San Andreas and accept the longer commitment. You can return to Vice City afterward for a more concentrated change of pace.
Final recommendation
Choose Vice City for atmosphere, focused pacing and a single-city takeover story. Choose San Andreas for exploration, variety, multiple cities and a larger time investment. Buy the Definitive Edition when you want the current consolidated package, but check the live platform listing because physical formats, digital availability, patches, prices and compatibility can differ.
