What changes when you play GTA V on PS5?

The practical choice is straightforward: choose Fidelity when image quality and native 4K matter most, Performance when you want the most responsive controls, and Performance RT when you want ray-traced effects without giving up the 60 FPS target. Because Rockstar uses the word “targets,” none of these modes should be treated as an independently measured or permanently locked frame rate. The available sources do not include controlled, matching-scene PS4-versus-PS5 benchmark results or quantified loading tests.

These specifications come from Rockstar’s 2022 announcement and describe intended settings, not a laboratory comparison. A target can vary with scene complexity, effects and other workload; the evidence supplied for this comparison does not establish a frame-rate floor, average frame rate or exact loading-time improvement.
Fidelity Mode
Fidelity prioritizes visual quality and targets 30 FPS. On PS5 it uses native 4K and includes ray tracing. This is the mode to select if you sit close to a large 4K display, prefer the cleanest fine detail, or would rather preserve visual effects than maximize control responsiveness.
Performance Mode
Performance is tuned for responsiveness and targets 60 FPS at upscaled 4K on PS5. Rockstar’s wording is explicit: “Performance Mode is tuned for the most responsive gameplay experience and targets 60 FPS.” Upscaling means the rendering resolution is lower than native 4K in at least some circumstances, but the output is presented at 4K-compatible resolution.

Performance RT combines the 60 FPS target of Performance with ray tracing, using upscaled 4K on PS5. It is the logical starting point if you want smoother controls and reflective effects. Whether you prefer it to standard Performance depends on how much you notice reflections during driving and in city scenes.
Ray-traced reflections were added later
Feature support has changed since launch. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.64 notes, published for the December 2022 update, say ray-traced reflections were added to Fidelity Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. In those reflections, surfaces can show vehicles, characters and other scene details. The dated update note is why launch announcements should not be treated as a complete list of every current effect.

PS5 features beyond resolution and frame rate
Loading, audio and display options
Rockstar advertises faster loading on the newer console, immersive 3D audio, improved texture quality and HDR options. These are platform-level enhancements rather than published benchmark numbers. You should expect less waiting around transitions than on the PS4 generation, but no official source in the supplied material states an exact number of seconds saved.
HDR support also depends on your television, receiver and console settings. If the picture looks washed out, check the PS5’s HDR calibration and your display’s HDR mode rather than assuming the game is malfunctioning.
Controller and platform-specific feedback
The PS5 version supports newer-console features, including advanced haptic feedback described in Rockstar’s community material. The effect is most noticeable through changes in trigger and vibration feedback during driving, shooting and environmental events. The sources do not quantify the number of supported effects or compare controller latency, so treat this as an added feature rather than a measured performance advantage.
GTA Online launch-era additions
Rockstar’s March 2022 announcement described several PS5/Xbox Series X|S additions to GTA Online:
- A redesigned introduction and tutorial.
- An option to skip the Story Mode prologue before entering Online.
- Career Builder, which lets a new character select a business and essentials with a GTA$4,000,000 starting windfall.
Those details describe the launch-era next-generation package. Rockstar has continued updating GTA Online, so check the current in-game menus and support information if a particular tutorial, Career Builder option or starting allowance is important to you.

How the PS4 version compares
PS4 remains the last-generation edition. The supplied official material does not establish a precise base-PS4 frame rate, resolution, loading time or a separate PS4 Pro result, so it would be misleading to attach exact console-by-console numbers here. A PS4 Pro is still running the PS4 version; it is not the PS5 edition and does not gain the PS5-only graphics modes, ray-tracing implementation, newer-console loading path or PS5 controller features.

If your priority is simply access to the same open world and missions, the PS4 release remains playable; if you care about modern display features and a 60 FPS target, PS5 is the meaningful upgrade.
Can you upgrade GTA V from PS4 to PS5?
Rockstar Support’s article, last updated June 18, 2026, says owners of physical and digital PS4 copies can download the PS5 version from the PS5 GTA V product page in the PlayStation Store. The exact wording is: “Owners of the physical and/or digital version of GTAV on PS4 can download the PS5 version of GTAV from the PS5 GTAV product description page in the PlayStation Store.”
Use Rockstar’s free Grand Theft Auto V upgrade support article as the current eligibility reference. Store region, account ownership and the edition attached to your account can affect what you see, so confirm the entitlement on your own PS5 before paying for another copy.
Digital PS4 owners
Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation account that owns the digital PS4 license, open the PS5 GTA V product page and look for the available download or upgrade entitlement. If the store shows a price, verify that you are viewing the PS5 product and the correct account before completing a purchase; do not assume an upgrade is unavailable solely because the wrong edition page is open.

Physical-disc PS4 owners
Rockstar says a physical owner must insert the PS4 disc into the PS5 to verify ownership. The disc acts as the license check, so you must keep it inserted whenever you launch the upgraded PS5 game. A PS5 model without a disc drive cannot perform that check using a disc alone; in that situation, use a digital entitlement or a version that your hardware can read.
Do you need to buy the game again?
Not if your PS4 copy is eligible and the PS5 product page recognizes your ownership. The support article documents a free-upgrade path for qualifying physical and digital PS4 owners. Because storefront entitlements can vary by account and region, check the current product page rather than relying on an old launch promotion or a third-party listing.

Yes. Rockstar says GTA Online characters and progression can be migrated from PS4 to PS5 once. Story Mode progress can also be migrated once. The current overview is in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Online Character Transfers support article, last updated January 29, 2025.
“One-time” matters: plan the migration around the character and save you actually want to continue. Do not treat it as a synchronization service that keeps two generations permanently mirrored. After migration, follow the current prompts in the game and Rockstar Support rather than assuming that launch-era menu names are unchanged.
Story Mode saves
Rockstar’s 2022 launch instructions said Story Mode save upload began from the Game tab of the Pause Menu, allowed one stored save per platform and kept uploaded saves available for 90 days. Those instructions are dated. The 90-day period should not be presented as a current, independently verified guarantee; consult the live support directions before uploading, and make sure the save you want is the one selected.

GTA Online characters and progression
Migration covers your GTA Online character and progression, subject to Rockstar’s eligibility and migration rules. Before starting, sign in to the same Rockstar and PlayStation accounts used for the PS4 profile, update both installations, and read the confirmation screen carefully. A one-time transfer is not the place to experiment with an unwanted character or a temporary account.
What happens to GTA$?
Purchased and earned GTA$ follow different rules. Rockstar’s October 4, 2024 guidance says purchased GTA$ transfer only between platforms in the same console family, while earned GTA$ transfer regardless of platform family. PS4 and PS5 are in the same PlayStation family, so purchased GTA$ can move in that migration context; earned GTA$ is treated more broadly. How to claim the PS5 version
- Update your PS5 and account. Install the latest system software and sign in with the PlayStation account that owns the PS4 game or will use the eligible disc.
- Open the PS5 product page. Search for GTA V in the PlayStation Store and select the PS5 product description page, not just the PS4 download already in your library.
- Check the entitlement. Digital owners should see the download option when the correct account is active. Physical owners should insert the PS4 disc when prompted so the console can verify ownership.
- Install the PS5 edition. Confirm that the download is labeled for PS5. The PS4 installation and the PS5 installation can appear as separate products.
- Prepare your saves and profile. Launch the PS4 version if you need to upload a Story Mode save, and make sure the GTA Online character is associated with the Rockstar account you will use on PS5.
- Start the one-time migration. Follow the current in-game migration flow and review the character, progression and save selected before accepting.
- Choose a graphics mode. After installation, open the display or graphics settings and select Fidelity, Performance or Performance RT according to your priorities.

Common upgrade and migration problems
The store still shows a price
Check that you are on the PS5 product page, signed in to the account that owns the digital PS4 license, and viewing the correct regional storefront. Disc owners should insert the disc before checking. If the entitlement still does not appear, use Rockstar Support’s current upgrade article rather than purchasing a duplicate copy immediately.
The PS5 game will not start with a disc
Insert the original PS4 disc and leave it in the console. The disc is the ownership check for a physical upgrade. Confirm that the disc is readable and that you did not install a different region’s product than the one tied to your account.
Your character or save is missing
Verify that the PS5 uses the same PlayStation and Rockstar accounts as the PS4 profile. Migration is one-time, so stop before accepting a character or save you do not recognize. For Story Mode, check that the intended save was uploaded under the current procedure; the 2022 menu path and 90-day statement are historical instructions, not a promise that the present interface is identical.
GTA$ balance changed
Separate purchased GTA$ from GTA$ earned through play. Rockstar’s rules treat them differently, and purchased currency is limited to the same console family. Review the October 4, 2024 currency guidance before concluding that a transfer failed.
Bottom line: is GTA V better on PS5?
For most players with a PS5, yes. The newer edition is the one to use when you want a 60 FPS target, selectable visual modes, ray tracing, faster loading, 3D audio, HDR and newer-controller features. Performance Mode favors responsiveness, Fidelity favors native-4K image quality, and Performance RT combines a 60 FPS target with ray tracing. PS4 remains a valid way to play the game, but it does not provide the PS5 edition’s graphics-mode selector or current-generation feature set. Eligible PS4 owners should check the PS5 product page and migrate only after confirming the correct account, save and character.
