Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas does not provide a general menu for replaying story missions after you complete them. To play a completed mission again, load a save made before it or start a new game. In the Definitive Edition, some missions can be retried from a checkpoint after failure, but checkpoint retry is not the same as post-completion replay.
Cheats are separate from replay controls. Rockstar warns that cheats can cause malfunctions, crashes, corrupted saves and unrecoverable glitches, so use a disposable save and never overwrite your main progress after activating one.

The distinction matters because a checkpoint retry restores a failed attempt, while a replay requires the game to return to an earlier story state. Treat them as different features when planning saves or troubleshooting a mission.

Definitive Edition checkpoint behavior
Rockstar’s Definitive Edition Title Update 1.02 notes, updated April 29, 2024, describe a bug in High Stakes, Low Rider where selecting retry from the last checkpoint restarted the game from the beginning. The fix confirms that a last-checkpoint retry path exists for that mission. A separate 1.04 update result also mentions problems retrying missions from the last checkpoint and a fix for being unable to retry High Stakes, Low Rider.

These notes establish checkpoint retry behavior, not a universal promise that every mission has identical checkpoints or menus. Check the options shown after your particular failure. If “retry from last checkpoint” is offered, it should return you to the relevant checkpoint rather than erase the entire attempt.
What checkpoint retry does not do
- It does not create a permanent replay entry for a mission you finished successfully.
- It does not let you select any earlier story mission from a library.
- It does not guarantee the same checkpoint layout in the original release and the Definitive Edition.
Replaying a completed story mission
Use a pre-mission save
The practical method is to load a save made before the mission started. A GameFAQs answer for the PlayStation 5 Definitive Edition describes the same limitation: after completion, the mission cannot be played again unless you have a pre-mission save or start a new game. This is player-facing evidence rather than a formal Rockstar policy statement, so the conclusion should be read as a description of the available game flow, not as a quoted universal rule for every platform build.
- Pause the game and open the load-game screen.
- Choose the manual save created before the mission, not an autosave made afterward.
- Allow the game to load, then travel to the mission marker and begin the mission again.
- Keep a second slot for any new progress so the pre-mission file remains available.
Start a new game
If no earlier save exists, a new game is the only broadly applicable way to reach the mission again. This resets story progress, properties, weapons and other state to the new run. It is suitable for a complete replay run, but impractical when you only want to revisit one late-game mission.
Why a separate slot is essential
Use a rotation such as “before mission,” “during mission,” and “current progress.” Do not rely on a single rotating autosave if you expect to revisit a scene. The separate slot also protects your completed game from experimental cheats and failed attempts to reproduce a bug.

How to set up saves for future replays
- Reach the mission giver and stop before activating the marker.
- Create a manual save in a dedicated slot labeled with the mission name or number.
- Create another save after the mission if you want a clean post-mission restore point.
- Continue using ordinary saves in different slots rather than overwriting the pre-mission file.
- When you want to revisit the mission, load the dedicated pre-mission slot and play from there.
This method preserves the surrounding story state at the time of the save. It is more reliable than trying to use a cheat to teleport, restore objectives or force a mission restart.
Cheat safety: Rockstar’s warning
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s “Game Tips for GTA: San Andreas Special Ed” page, last updated May 2, 2024, gives an unusually strong warning: “Warning: Cheat keys are not officially supported by Take 2 Games. Using cheat keys can cause the game to malfunction or crash. Use at your own risk!” The same page says: “NOTE: There is no safe cheat in San Andreas. Once activated, do not save the game. Doing so may corrupt the file and cause unrecoverable glitches and/or crashes.”
The page is labeled “Special Ed,” and its final recovery guidance is written with PlayStation 2 use in mind. Do not assume that every recovery detail applies unchanged to a modern PC, console or Switch installation. The core warning is still relevant: make a backup save before entering a code, and leave the cheat session without saving over valuable progress.

- Save your normal game in a separate slot.
- Enter the cheat only after that save is secure.
- Experiment, complete the temporary activity, or test the code.
- Quit without saving the cheated state, then reload the clean slot.
PC Gamer’s current cheat guide also warns that some cheats can soft-lock progress and that cheats can lock players out of achievements. These are additional reasons to keep cheat testing outside your main story file.

How to enter cheats by platform
PC
On PC, type the listed code or phrase while the game is unpaused and in active gameplay. PC Gamer’s guide says a success pop-up appears when the game accepts the code. Pause menus, cutscenes and text-entry screens are not the same as active gameplay, so return to the world before typing.
PlayStation, Xbox and Switch
Console players enter the button sequence shown for their platform during gameplay. The same guide notes that a keyboard or controller can also be connected where the platform supports it, but the actual sequence remains platform-specific. Do not substitute a PC text code for a console sequence unless the guide explicitly lists that input method for your edition.
Check edition and platform before entering a code
The original San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition can have different code support. PC Gamer marks remaster compatibility on individual entries and says the majority of current codes work with the Definitive Edition; that is not a guarantee that every original code works. Confirm the platform, edition and compatibility marker for each code before using it.

Enter these only in a disposable session. A code that appears to work can still alter mission logic, achievements or save behavior later.
Cheats are not a mission-replay tool
A health, weapon or ammunition code changes player resources; it does not add a completed-mission selector. Cheats also cannot safely reconstruct the exact world state that existed before a mission. Trying to use them to bypass a missing replay menu risks replacing a manageable save limitation with a corrupted or soft-locked file.
If your objective is to see a mission again, use the pre-mission save method. If your objective is to recover from a failed attempt, use the checkpoint retry option when the game provides it. Reserve cheats for experimentation after those two legitimate paths have been protected.

Original game versus Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is included in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The Rockstar Games Store lists the collection with Rockstar Games as publisher, Grove Street Games as adaptation developer, a November 11, 2021 release date, and PlayStation 5 as a selectable platform. The original release and the remaster should be treated as separate software versions when you are checking code compatibility or troubleshooting a mission retry.

Troubleshooting common replay problems
There is no retry option after failure
Confirm whether the mission actually reached a checkpoint and whether you are playing the Definitive Edition build referenced by the update notes. If no retry option appears, reload your latest clean save and attempt the mission again. Do not assume that a missing option means the mission can later be selected from a replay menu.
You completed the mission and cannot find it in the map
That is consistent with the available player-facing guidance. Load the manual save from before the mission. If you overwrote it, the remaining general option is a new game.
A cheat worked, but progress or achievements changed
Stop saving the current state. Exit and reload the clean pre-cheat slot. If the file already shows corruption, crashes or unrecoverable glitches, follow platform-specific support guidance; the PlayStation 2 recovery detail on Rockstar’s “Special Ed” page should not be treated as universal modern-platform instructions.

- Verify that the game is unpaused and in active gameplay.
- Check that you used the input method for your platform rather than a PC-only text code.
- Confirm whether the individual entry is marked compatible with the Definitive Edition.
- Check spelling or button order, then retry only after protecting your clean save.
Best practice for a replay-focused playthrough
- Keep one untouched save for normal progression.
- Create named pre-mission saves for scenes you may want to revisit.
- Use separate slots for cheat experiments.
- Record your platform and edition when consulting a code list.
- Use checkpoint retry for a failed attempt, not as evidence of a permanent replay system.
With that setup, you can revisit important missions without sacrificing a completed run and can test cheats without turning a temporary experiment into your only save.
