GTA Online Public vs. Invite-Only Sessions: What Changes and Which Should You Choose?

Choose Invite Only if you want to run businesses, complete Sell Missions, or play with selected friends without strangers entering your lobby. Choose Public if you want an open freemode population, rival-player encounters, and eligibility for the increased high-demand bonus attached to public Sell Missions. Rockstar has not published the bonus percentage in the official notes cited here, so any exact figure you see elsewhere should be treated cautiously.

The key change is that business work is no longer locked to public lobbies. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.61 made Business activities, including Sell Missions, available in private sessions. That removes the old privacy-versus-business-work dilemma, but Public sessions still matter if you specifically want the public-lobby bonus or activities that depend on a larger player population.

Public and Invite Only at a glance

Both session types use the same GTA Online world, characters, properties, businesses and progression. The difference is who can enter and which activities benefit from a populated lobby.

Question Invite Only Public
Who can join? Players you invite; entry is controlled by you. Other GTA Online players can occupy the open session.
Business activities Available, including Sell Missions. Available.
Sell Mission high-demand bonus Not the public-session bonus described by Rockstar. Rockstar says public Sell Missions with rival players receive an increased high-demand bonus; the official notes do not state the percentage.
Freemode Events Available in private sessions when the event’s participant requirement is met. Available in the open population, where meeting participation thresholds is generally easier.
Time Trials Unavailable in private or solo sessions. Available as a public-session activity.
Hunt the Beast Cannot begin unless the session has at least 10 players. Can meet the requirement in a sufficiently populated lobby.
Best fit Private business work, friends-only play and controlled co-op. Public encounters, rival players and the public Sell Mission bonus.

These distinctions come from Rockstar’s Title Update 1.61 notes, its Invite Only setup instructions, and its Freemode Events information.

What an Invite Only session actually changes

Entry is invitation-controlled

An Invite Only session is a private lobby. You decide which players receive invitations, so random players do not enter the session through the normal public-lobby matchmaking flow. This makes the mode suitable for solo preparation, private co-op and business work where interruptions from other players are a concern. You can still invite teammates when you need help; private means controlled access, not necessarily single-player.

Business work is available

Rockstar’s July 2022 Title Update 1.61 explicitly states: “Business content, including Sell missions, can now be accessed in private sessions.” Rockstar’s announcement for The Criminal Enterprises identifies Invite Only, Crew and Friends sessions as private session types in which all Business activities, including Sell Missions, are available. You can therefore source or sell business stock without first finding a public lobby. The session choice no longer determines whether your business menu is usable; it determines the environment in which you perform the activity.

Privacy does not make every activity identical

Private access applies to business content, not to every freemode feature without conditions. Rockstar says Freemode Events can run in private sessions, but many events require a minimum number of participants. A private lobby with only one player may therefore show fewer event opportunities than a populated Public session. Time Trials are specifically unavailable in private or solo sessions. Hunt the Beast requires a minimum of 10 players in the session, so a small Invite Only group cannot start it.

What a Public session adds

An open player population

Public sessions place you in an open freemode environment with other players. That creates the unscripted encounters many players associate with GTA Online: rival businesses, spontaneous cooperation, hostile interference, and a larger pool for events that need participants. It also means you cannot control who else is present, so traffic, attacks and disruptions are part of the trade-off. Public is therefore a choice about exposure as much as a choice about features.

The public Sell Mission bonus

Title Update 1.61 says the high-demand bonus for public Sell Missions with rival players was increased. Rockstar’s published notes do not provide a percentage or a formula, and the amount may depend on the mission and current game rules. The reliable conclusion is qualitative: Public can pay more for a qualifying Sell Mission because it exposes you to rival players. Do not rely on an uncited fixed percentage when planning a sale. The bonus is an opportunity attached to public risk, not a guaranteed amount that applies to every delivery in every session.

More reliable participation for population-based events

Public lobbies are usually the practical choice when your goal is an event that needs many players. The official Freemode Events support page says private sessions support Freemode Events but warns that many require a minimum number of participants. Hunt the Beast’s stated minimum is 10 players. A busy Public session gives those events a realistic chance to start; an Invite Only lobby requires you to assemble enough participants yourself. If your objective is simply to encounter a broad range of freemode activity, Public avoids having to recruit a group before the event can begin.

How to start an Invite Only session

Rockstar’s current support instructions, updated May 26, 2026, require you to begin from Story Mode when creating a new Invite Only session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Load into Story Mode.
  2. Open the Pause Menu.
  3. Select Online.
  4. Choose Find New Session.
  5. Select Invite Only Session.
  6. Once the private lobby loads, open the Online player or invite controls and send invitations to the friends or crew members you want to join.

The game transfers you into a new private session. If the Invite Only option is missing or the game refuses to launch it, verify that you are actually in Story Mode rather than already inside an Online session; Rockstar’s support article specifically states that Story Mode is required to start a new Invite Only session. Starting from Story Mode is a setup requirement, not a statement that every later session change requires leaving Online.

How to change session types while already online

Title Update 1.61 removed the need to return to Story Mode every time you want to move between session types. While in GTA Online:

  1. Open the Pause Menu.
  2. Go to Online.
  3. Select Find New Session.
  4. Choose the session type you need, such as Public or another available private option.

This is different from creating a brand-new Invite Only session through Rockstar’s support route: use Story Mode when you need to start that private lobby, but use Online > Find New Session to switch session types without an additional Story Mode trip once you are playing Online. This shortcut is useful when a business job, event or group plan changes and you need a different lobby type immediately.

Which session should you choose for common goals?

“I want to sell stock without random players attacking me.”

Use Invite Only. Business activities and Sell Missions are available in private sessions, so you can complete the sale with invited players or alone. You give up the public-lobby high-demand bonus described by Rockstar, but you also remove the open-session population that can interfere with the delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I want to maximize the possible Sell Mission payout.”

Use Public if you are willing to accept the risk of rival players. Rockstar says public Sell Missions with rival players receive an increased high-demand bonus, but the cited official notes do not quantify it. Treat the extra payout as compensation for exposure, not as guaranteed profit: the mission can be disrupted, and the bonus does not eliminate the normal delivery risks. If an unsuccessful sale would cost more than the possible upside, the private option is the more predictable financial decision.

“I am playing with a small group of friends.”

Use Invite Only, Friends or Crew private sessions. Rockstar identifies these private session types as supporting Business activities, including Sell Missions. Invite Only is the simplest choice when you want direct control over invitations and do not need a large public population. A Friends or Crew session may be convenient when your group already uses those membership settings, but the important point is that all three are private-session choices for business play.

“I want random encounters and a busy freemode world.”

Use Public. The mode is designed for open interaction with other players, including rival businesses and events that benefit from a larger pool. Expect less control over who is present and more possibility of interference. Public is the better fit when the activity you want depends on other players being present rather than merely tolerating their presence.

“I need Time Trials.”

Use Public. Rockstar’s Freemode Events information says Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions, so an Invite Only lobby is the wrong environment for that activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I want to play Hunt the Beast.”

Use a session with at least 10 players. Rockstar gives 10 as the minimum for Hunt the Beast. An Invite Only session works only if you bring enough participants into it; otherwise, a populated Public session is the practical option.

Business play: privacy versus the public bonus

The 2022 rule change matters because it separates two decisions that used to be linked: whether you can sell and whether strangers can join. You can now run Business activities in a private session, including Sell Missions, without treating Public as a prerequisite.

Business priority Better session Reason
Reliable delivery with minimal outside interference Invite Only Business content and Sell Missions are supported privately, and entry is controlled.
Highest possible payout when risk is acceptable Public Rockstar describes an increased high-demand bonus for public Sell Missions with rival players.
Coordinated sale with trusted teammates Invite Only, Friends or Crew Private session types listed by Rockstar support Business activities.
Testing a route, vehicle or delivery plan alone Invite Only You can practice and prepare without an open lobby.

There is no universal “best” business session. The decision is a risk calculation: private play favors control and consistency, while public play offers the possibility of a larger payout in exchange for exposure to rivals. Because Rockstar does not state the bonus amount in the cited notes, calculate your plan using the base sale value and regard the public bonus as an uncertain upside rather than money you are guaranteed to receive.

For a repeat business routine, decide before opening the sale screen. If your priority is completing a delivery with a known group and no outside participants, create or join a private session first. If you deliberately want the public premium, enter Public before launching the qualifying Sell Mission and accept that the same open population that enables the bonus can also interrupt the run.

Freemode Events and participant limits

Private sessions are not an all-or-nothing switch for freemode content. Rockstar’s support guidance says Freemode Events are available in private sessions, but many need enough participants to begin. That means the event’s own rules matter more than the session label.

  • Invite Only with one player: suitable for private business work, but many participant-based events will not start.
  • Invite Only with a coordinated group: some events can run if the group reaches the required count.
  • Public with many players: the easiest environment for events that depend on a broad player pool.
  • Time Trials: unavailable in private or solo sessions.
  • Hunt the Beast: requires at least 10 players in the session.

Rockstar’s Freemode Events page covers PS4, Xbox One and PC and was updated February 25, 2024. Event availability can vary with platform, current game mode and live-service changes, so check the in-game prompt if a particular event does not appear. A missing event does not automatically mean the session is malfunctioning; it may simply lack the required number of participants or be one of the activities restricted in private play.

What does not change when you switch sessions?

Changing from Public to Invite Only does not create a different character, property set or progression track. You remain in GTA Online with the same businesses and owned assets. The meaningful changes documented by Rockstar concern access conditions: who can enter, whether the public high-demand bonus can apply, and whether a freemode activity has enough participants or is restricted to public play. That is why switching sessions is a practical management decision rather than a reset of your online progress.

The session also does not turn every activity into a private equivalent. Business access is explicit, while event rules remain activity-specific. Before assuming a private lobby supports a particular event, check whether that event has a player minimum or a private-session restriction. This distinction prevents two common errors: treating Public as mandatory for every business sale, or treating Invite Only as a full replacement for every public freemode activity.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Assuming a Sell Mission requires Public

That is outdated after Title Update 1.61. Move to Invite Only and launch the business activity there. If the mission does not appear, confirm that the business is active and that you are using the correct management computer or interaction point; the session type itself is no longer a general block on Business content.

Expecting the public bonus in Invite Only

The increased high-demand bonus described by Rockstar is tied to public Sell Missions with rival players. A private sale should be chosen for control, not because it is expected to pay the public risk premium.

Trying to start Invite Only from Online

Rockstar’s current setup article says you must be in Story Mode to start a new Invite Only session. Return to Story Mode, then follow Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session.

Leaving Online unnecessarily just to change sessions

Once you are in GTA Online, Title Update 1.61 allows session changes without first returning to Story Mode. Use Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session and select the destination session type.

Blaming a private lobby when an event does not launch

Check the event’s participant requirement. Private sessions support Freemode Events in principle, but many events need multiple players. Hunt the Beast needs 10, and Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions.

Assuming every private session type works the same way for invitations

Invite Only, Friends and Crew are all identified by Rockstar as private session types that support Business activities, but their entry controls are based on how the session is organized. Choose Invite Only when you want to send direct invitations and control the group yourself; use Friends or Crew when your intended players are already managed through those social groups.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Identify the activity. Business sale, private co-op and preparation favor Invite Only; public encounters and population-based events favor Public.
  2. Decide how much interference you accept. If a failed or disrupted delivery would outweigh a possible bonus, use Invite Only.
  3. Check the event requirement. Time Trials need Public, and Hunt the Beast needs at least 10 players.
  4. Choose the session. Start Invite Only from Story Mode, or switch session types through Online > Find New Session while already online.
  5. Reassess before a sale. Private sessions provide access to Sell Missions; Public is optional unless you specifically want the stated high-demand bonus.
  6. Confirm your group. For private co-op, make sure the intended friends or crew members have invitations and that the lobby has enough players for any event you plan to run.
  7. Use the result as feedback. If an event does not appear, check its restrictions before abandoning the session; the limitation may be the event’s player requirement rather than your business or character.

Bottom line: privacy or population?

Invite Only is the default choice for most players who want dependable business progress, private deliveries or a controlled session with friends. Public is the deliberate choice for players who want an open freemode population, rival-player interaction or the increased high-demand bonus Rockstar associates with public Sell Missions. Since the bonus amount is not specified in Rockstar’s cited notes, choose Public for that upside only when you are comfortable accepting the corresponding risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sell business stock in an Invite Only session?

Yes. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.61 made Business content, including Sell Missions, available in private sessions. Invite Only is therefore a valid way to complete a sale alone or with invited players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Invite Only sales receive the public high-demand bonus?

The documented increased high-demand bonus is for public Sell Missions with rival players. Rockstar’s cited notes do not state an exact percentage, so do not assume a private sale receives the same premium.

Can you switch from Public to Invite Only without returning to Story Mode?

Once you are already in GTA Online, Title Update 1.61 allows session changes through Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session. The Story Mode requirement applies to starting a new Invite Only session through Rockstar’s setup route.

Are Friends and Crew sessions private for business activities?

Yes. Rockstar identifies Invite Only, Crew and Friends as private session types where Business activities, including Sell Missions, are available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are some Freemode Events missing in Invite Only?

Private sessions support Freemode Events, but many events require a minimum number of participants. Time Trials are unavailable in private or solo sessions, and Hunt the Beast requires at least 10 players in the session.

Which session is better for playing alone?

Invite Only is usually the better fit because entry is controlled and Business activities remain available. Choose Public instead if the specific activity requires public play or you want the open-player environment.

Is Public always more profitable for a Sell Mission?

Public offers the possibility of Rockstar’s increased high-demand bonus when rival players are present, but the exact amount is not stated in the cited official notes and the delivery carries more exposure. It is a risk-for-upside choice, not a guaranteed profit increase.

The Bottom Line

Use Invite Only for controlled business work and private co-op. Use Public for open freemode interaction, population-dependent events and the increased public Sell Mission bonus. The right choice is the one that matches your activity and tolerance for exposure.
