That premise gives GTA IV a clear emotional spine. Niko is not simply moving through a sequence of criminal opportunities; he is testing whether the life he was promised exists at all. Liberty City’s density reinforces the focus. Most of the important social, criminal and personal pressures are packed into one metropolitan environment, so the story repeatedly brings Niko back to the same communities and relationships.
GTA V: a multi-character heist sandbox
GTA V moves the action to Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County. Rockstar describes the setting as a major expansion of open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, with city streets, hills, countryside and beaches available within one region.
The campaign follows Franklin, Michael and Trevor. Their stories interweave rather than forming three isolated campaigns, and switching between them lets missions show the same criminal world from different perspectives. This structure supports larger heists, contrasting personalities and more abrupt changes in tone than GTA IV normally allows.

The trade-off is intimacy. Three leads give GTA V more range, but each individual arc receives less uninterrupted attention than Niko’s. Why GTA V is more varied but less intimate
GTA V’s three-protagonist design lets the campaign alternate between social satire, family conflict, ambition and outright spectacle. Franklin provides an entry point into Los Santos, Michael brings an established criminal history and domestic tension, and Trevor pushes the game toward its most extreme behavior. Their contrasting personalities keep missions from settling into one emotional register.
The heist structure also gives GTA V a strong sense of preparation and payoff. Switching characters during operations can make a single mission feel like a coordinated production rather than one avatar completing every task alone. However, the ensemble format fragments attention. The campaign has to return to three separate personal situations, so its emotional through-line is less concentrated than Niko’s. Neither model is objectively more realistic or better. The preference depends on whether you interpret driving as a physical simulation to manage or as a way to move quickly through a larger action sandbox. A player who enjoys wrestling a heavy sedan around a corner may prefer IV; a player who wants to focus on the mission rather than the vehicle may prefer V.

Activity breadth and systemic play
GTA V is the stronger choice when an open world is judged by how many kinds of play it supports. Its setting, character switching and mission design create more opportunities to alternate between story objectives, driving, exploration and optional diversions.
