What happened in September 2022?
On September 18, 2022, dozens of videos and screenshots appearing to show an in-development build of Grand Theft Auto VI spread across the internet. The footage showed unfinished visuals, debugging elements and scenes that looked unlike a polished public trailer, prompting arguments over whether it was an elaborate fan hoax.

Rockstar later confirmed the central claim. In a statement reproduced by GamesRadar, the company wrote: “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.” Rockstar also said it was “extremely disappointed” that details of the game had been shared this way and that it would properly introduce the game when ready.

That wording establishes two points: the intrusion happened, and the stolen material included genuine early footage. It does not certify every file, screenshot or rumor posted after the breach.

The current Rockstar store page lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. That date supersedes the May 26, 2026 date reported in Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 release. Trailer 2 footage was captured on PlayStation 5, according to that announcement.

Rockstar’s store says physical editions will contain only a download code inside the box and that no disc will be included. Buyers will therefore need an internet connection and enough console storage to download the game, even when purchasing a boxed copy. Check the product description for the specific console before ordering, because a code for one platform will not activate on another.

Why the leak matters to fans
The breach changed the status of one of gaming’s biggest rumors: the existence of the project and the authenticity of the 2022 footage no longer depend on internet speculation. At the same time, the footage came from an early build, so treating it as a final specification creates the next misinformation problem. Official trailers, Rockstar announcements and the current store listing are the appropriate references for the game’s announced setting, protagonists, platforms and date.
