Rockstar North’s stated goal is to make escaping police in Grand Theft Auto VI feel like a quick getaway: commit a crime, leave before police arrive, and avoid turning the incident into a larger fight. That is a design intention described in a preview—not a guarantee that every crime will be easy to escape or a complete rulebook for the finished game.
What “hit-and-run” means for GTA 6’s wanted system
In an interview transcript attributed to IGN’s Rockstar North preview, studio head Rob Nelson described trying to encourage “this hit-and-run style of gameplay.” The idea is to move on after a crime rather than stay and escalate. In the demonstrated scenario, someone must witness the crime or an alarm must be triggered for the event to be reported to law enforcement. How the preview says players can reduce police attention
Nelson’s demonstration showed police interest associated with a local hot area on the map. He said police would remain there for a while; when he later hovered over the area, one star was still associated with it. The preview did not specify an exact duration or establish how often police return.

- Leaving the area instead of remaining at the scene.
- Changing vehicles or clothes.
- Waiting for the heat to die down.

Leaving the scene is different from escalating
The preview’s contrast is between getting away after an incident and staying to commit further violence. Nelson said the team wanted to encourage players to avoid unnecessary escalation. That describes the desired play style, not a guarantee that fleeing will always prevent a pursuit or clear wanted attention immediately.

Wanted attention and Criminal Profile are separate
The hot-area and police response concern the immediate incident. Nelson separately described a Criminal Profile system that tracks what sort of criminal the player is, and said repeatedly going beyond what is necessary may shift it. GamesRadar+ reports on the Criminal Profile, while noting that its consequences had not been spelled out. The available explanation does not establish all the profile’s effects or make it a substitute for the wanted system.
What the preview does not establish
The interview is a preview demonstration, not a final-game technical specification. It gives no exact wanted-level timers, exhaustive rules for how crimes are reported, schedule for police revisiting a hot area, or complete list of Criminal Profile consequences. Treat the described mechanics as an indication of design intent and demonstrated behavior, not a comprehensive guide to the released game.
