GTA 6 wanted levels explained: how to lose the police in six-star chases

GTA 6 has a six-star wanted meter. That restores the series’ former six-star maximum after GTA V’s five-star cap. Rockstar’s 2026 Extended Look also shows a more traceable pursuit system: police can retain leads on your vehicle, clothing, face and whether Jason and Lucia are traveling together. To escape, break direct sight, abandon a compromised car, move through alleys on foot, change vehicles or appearance, and split the pair when the search is tracking both protagonists.

A crime does not automatically alert the police. Rob Nelson explained that someone must witness it or an alarm must be triggered before the law is notified. The footage demonstrates the system through three stars; the exact units and behavior Rockstar will use at four, five and six stars have not been confirmed.

How many wanted stars are in GTA 6?

GTA 6’s wanted meter reaches six stars. This is the maximum shown in Rockstar’s 2026 material and is a change from GTA V, which used a five-star cap. The six-star display was visible in Rockstar’s 2026 Extended Look, as reported in coverage of the footage.

The number of stars tells you how intense the law-enforcement response has become, but the available footage does not establish a complete six-level roster of police units. Rockstar has shown enough to explain how detection and evasion work, not enough to confirm what specifically arrives at every upper level.

Game or evidence Maximum wanted level What is established
GTA VI Six stars Six-star meter shown in Rockstar’s 2026 Extended Look.
GTA V Five stars Its wanted system used a five-star cap.
GTA VI footage shown so far Up to three stars demonstrated The Extended Look does not reveal the confirmed response for levels four through six.

That distinction matters when planning a chase. You can use the demonstrated detection rules and escape tactics now, but you should not treat older games’ endgame responses as confirmed GTA 6 mechanics.

What triggers the police in GTA 6?

A witness or an alarm is required

The wanted system begins with reporting. Rob Nelson described the rule this way: “The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” In practical terms, committing an offense in isolation is not the same as instantly generating a police response. A bystander, security system or other alarm must communicate the event to law enforcement.

This creates a window in which your priority is preventing a report or getting away before the report turns into a confirmed sighting. The system is therefore more than a simple crime counter: it links the event to who or what can identify you afterward.

Four identifying leads can remain active

The footage and accompanying explanation identify four recognition categories. Police may retain information about:

  • Vehicle: the car or motorcycle connected to the incident.
  • Clothes: visible clothing that witnesses or cameras can associate with you.
  • Face: your character’s facial identity.
  • Pair status: the fact that Jason and Lucia are together.

These leads are separate. Escaping in a different vehicle can remove the vehicle connection while leaving clothing or facial recognition intact. Changing your appearance addresses a different lead. Separating Jason and Lucia can reduce the information police can match when they are searching for both characters as a pair.

What do the red stars mean?

In the reported footage, the wanted stars change from white to red after direct contact with the police is broken. An independent guide interprets the red state as an active search rather than a direct chase. That is a reading of what the Extended Look shows, not a rule Rockstar has published in a manual or technical specification.

The safest way to use the color change is as a visual warning: you may no longer be in an uninterrupted pursuit, but the investigation has not necessarily ended. Continue avoiding fresh sightings until the search state clears. Because Rockstar has not stated the exact conditions behind the color transition, do not assume that red stars always follow one particular maneuver or that they guarantee immediate safety.

How to lose the police in GTA 6

The following sequence combines the escape methods that have been confirmed or directly advised in the available material. Adapt the order to the terrain and to which identifying leads the police have already collected.

  1. Break direct line of sight. Turn away from the pursuing units and use alleys, side streets, garages and other physical cover. The objective is to stop police from maintaining a continuous visual lock. A long straight road gives pursuers an easy view; a network of corners gives you opportunities to disappear.
  2. Leave the vehicle when the city chase reaches about three stars. Nelson specifically warns that escaping in a car can become difficult at three stars in the city unless you have a very fast vehicle or a sports bike. His usual recommendation is to get off the streets and continue on foot through alleys. This also prevents the compromised vehicle from remaining an obvious identifier.
  3. Move through cover on foot. Once out of the car, avoid open intersections and predictable sidewalks. Use the alley network to put walls and turns between you and the search. The purpose is not simply to travel farther; it is to deny another direct sighting while the police are looking.
  4. Change vehicles if you remain mobile. A vehicle can be one of the leads police retain. Switching to another car or bike removes the original vehicle from the immediate match, although it does not automatically erase clothing or facial recognition. Make the change only after you have created enough separation to avoid being observed during the swap.
  5. Change visible appearance. If officers or witnesses have a clothing or appearance lead, alter what they can see before re-entering exposed streets. Clothing changes are most useful after line of sight has been broken; changing in front of searching officers can simply create another sighting.
  6. Split Jason and Lucia when the pair is being tracked. Police can retain the fact that the protagonists are together. Separating them reduces the number of matching details in one location and can make it harder for a search to connect both characters. Do this after breaking contact, not while both are still plainly visible to the same officers.
  7. Avoid a renewed sighting during the search. A red-star or search phase is not permission to drive back through the area that just lost you. Any fresh visual contact can restore an active pursuit. Stay under cover until the wanted state has fully cleared, then return to normal movement.

Choosing an escape tactic by situation

Three stars in a dense city

City streets are the clearest case for abandoning a car. Nelson’s advice is to leave the vehicle and use alleys on foot unless you are already in an exceptionally fast car or on a sports bike. Buildings, fences and narrow passages can break sight more reliably than a high-speed run through avenues where patrols have long views.

Do not treat speed as a substitute for concealment. A fast vehicle may create distance, but it also preserves a recognizable vehicle lead and keeps you exposed to another sighting. If the first escape attempt fails, stop trying to win a straight-line race and switch to cover.

When the vehicle is the strongest lead

If police are responding to the car used in the crime, your next objective is to put that vehicle out of the search. Break line of sight first, then change vehicles in a concealed location. Driving directly from one visible car to another can leave officers with a new sighting that links both vehicles to the same suspects.

When clothing or face information has been recorded

A vehicle swap alone is not a complete reset. If the system has identified clothing or your face, alter your visible appearance after reaching cover. The game’s demonstrated categories imply that police can combine multiple details, so removing one lead may not be enough if another remains easy to match.

When Jason and Lucia are together

The pair itself is an identifying clue. Splitting the protagonists can reduce what a patrol can match in one search area. Use the separation as a way to break the pattern of the pursuit, while remembering that each character can still be identified through clothing, face or a vehicle.

When the stars turn red

Interpret the red display as a search condition based on the footage, not as a fully documented rule. Keep using cover, avoid major roads and do not assume the police have forgotten every lead. The exact timer, radius and reset behavior have not been published.

What is known about four-, five- and six-star chases?

The six-star meter is confirmed, but the top-end response is not. The Extended Look demonstrates wanted activity up to three stars. The cited material does not identify which police units appear at four, five or six stars, how their equipment changes, whether their search radius expands, or whether their tactics differ from lower levels.

Older GTA games used different high-level responses. Helicopters, SWAT-style teams, military units or NOOSE are therefore historical examples, not confirmed GTA 6 behavior. Until Rockstar describes those levels or shows them in footage, any claim that a particular unit is guaranteed at a specific star count is speculation.

Wanted range Evidence status What you should do
One to three stars Three-star activity is shown; witness/alarm reporting and the recognition leads are described. Break sight, use cover, and remove the strongest identifying lead.
Four stars Response units and exact behavior not stated in the cited material. Apply the same concealment principles without assuming a particular unit.
Five stars Response units and exact behavior not stated. Do not rely on GTA V or earlier-game patterns as a guarantee.
Six stars Maximum meter is shown; response details are not described. Treat it as the highest escalation while waiting for Rockstar’s definitive explanation.

GTA 6 and GTA V wanted systems compared

The most useful comparison is not simply the number of stars. GTA 6 appears to track how police identify you and how those leads can be removed, while GTA V is relevant mainly as the previous five-star reference point.

Comparison point GTA VI GTA V
Maximum stars Six stars shown in Rockstar’s 2026 Extended Look. Five-star cap.
Initial report A witness or an alarm must report the crime, according to Nelson’s explanation. Not stated in the supplied GTA VI comparison material.
Recognized identity details Vehicle, clothes, face and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Not stated in the supplied comparison material.
Changing vehicles Can remove the vehicle lead police recorded. Not stated in the supplied comparison material.
Splitting protagonists Can reduce what police can match when Jason and Lucia are together. Not applicable to the GTA VI pair mechanic described here.
Search-state color Footage shows white stars changing to red after direct contact is broken; the exact rule is unpublished. Not stated in the supplied comparison material.
Top-level units Four-, five- and six-star responses are not confirmed. Historical GTA V behavior should not be imported as a GTA VI specification.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming any crime immediately creates a pursuit

The reporting condition matters. A witness or alarm must communicate the crime before police are alerted. Once an alert exists, however, lingering near the scene increases the chance that the identifying leads will be recorded or refreshed.

Staying in the same car after losing sight

Breaking line of sight is only the first part of an escape. If the vehicle was identified, continuing to drive it leaves one of the police’s strongest leads intact. Change vehicles or leave the car entirely after reaching cover.

Changing vehicles but not appearance

Police can retain several categories at once. A different car does not remove a clothing or face match. Alter the visible appearance when those details are likely to have been captured.

Keeping both protagonists together

Jason and Lucia being together is itself a recognized condition. If the search is matching the pair, splitting them can reduce the information available in one place.

Treating red stars as a guaranteed safe state

The white-to-red change is a footage-based interpretation of an active search. It does not come with a published timer or guarantee that every lead has been erased. Continue avoiding sight until the wanted state clears.

Filling in unknown high-level behavior from older games

Six stars confirm the meter’s size, not the units that respond at the top. Helicopters, military forces, SWAT or NOOSE may feel familiar from previous titles, but none is confirmed for GTA 6 by the cited material.

Release and platform context

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. The page also includes pre-order links and official Vice City Collection and GTA VI merchandise information. The wanted-system details described here come from Rockstar’s 2026 footage and statements; final behavior can still be clarified or changed before launch.

For players planning their first escape routes, the practical takeaway is clear: do not rely on outrunning every patrol. Prevent reports when possible, break sight quickly, remove the vehicle and appearance leads police have collected, separate Jason and Lucia when useful, and treat any red-star search as unfinished business rather than a clean reset.
