GTA 6 Wanted Level vs. Heat: What’s the Difference?

Wanted level is the immediate police response shown as stars; heat is the recognition that can linger after a direct pursuit breaks. In the footage Rockstar has shown, officers can lose sight of Jason and Lucia while still recognizing their vehicle, clothing, faces, or the fact that they are together. That distinction explains why escaping the star meter may not make a getaway completely safe.

Wanted level and heat are two different layers

The clearest way to read the current GTA 6 police system is as two connected meters with different jobs:

  • Wanted level: the visible star rating for the intensity of the active law-enforcement response.
  • Heat: the recognition information police retain about the suspects after contact or visual pursuit is interrupted.

The stars answer, “How actively are the police responding right now?” Heat answers, “What can police still recognize if they encounter these suspects again?” A player may reduce the first problem without immediately eliminating the second.

This interpretation is based on the police HUD and pursuit behavior shown in Rockstar’s Extended Look, plus comments from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reported by GamesRadar and coverage from PC Gamer and GTA Intel. Rockstar has not released a complete rules manual, so the footage demonstrates the concept without establishing every timer, threshold, or response tier.

What the wanted level means in GTA 6

Stars represent the active response

The wanted meter is the familiar star system. It communicates the current intensity of the police operation while the crime is being actively investigated or pursued. More stars indicate a more serious and urgent response, but the footage does not provide a published table explaining exactly what every star means.

Rockstar’s 2026 gameplay reveal shows the meter reaching six stars. That is a change from GTA V’s five-star maximum. The sixth star is confirmed as part of the displayed interface; Rockstar has not yet documented which crimes fill it, what units respond at that stage, or whether it introduces a specific top-level force.

A crime has to be reported first

A wanted response does not necessarily begin the instant a player commits an offense. Rob Nelson told IGN, as quoted by GamesRadar, that a crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm before it is reported. That creates a crucial opening: the event and the police response are separate moments.

In practical terms, an unwitnessed act may not immediately produce stars. Once a witness, surveillance system, or alarm reports it, the game can begin the active search represented by the meter. The footage does not establish the exact range of witnesses, how alarms differ by location, or whether every crime follows the same reporting path.

Wanted level describes a live pursuit, not a permanent identity record

The star meter is most useful while officers are responding to a known incident. Evasion at this stage is about breaking direct contact, leaving the search area, and using the environment to prevent officers from maintaining a visual or tactical connection.

However, the disappearance or reduction of stars should not automatically be read as a clean slate. The separate recognition indicators are designed to cover that gap. They can continue to matter after the immediate pursuit has cooled.

What heat means in GTA 6

Heat is the recognition layer

Heat represents what police know or can continue to recognize about the suspects. In the shown HUD, smaller indicators appear beneath the stars for categories including:

  • Whether Jason and Lucia are together

These indicators are not a second star meter. They describe the clues that can connect a later sighting to the original incident. If police lose the car but still recognize the clothing, for example, the immediate chase may be over while the suspects remain identifiable in a subsequent encounter.

Heat can outlast direct contact

GamesRadar’s report on Rockstar’s design goal quotes Nelson saying the team wanted to move beyond a system where players could lose the cops “instantaneously” and officers would forget them “instantly.” The intended result is more persistent police memory.

That persistence is the practical difference between heat and wanted level. Wanted level concerns the response currently happening around the player. Heat concerns the information that survives when the response loses contact. The footage shows the two concepts together, but Rockstar has not published the exact duration or decay rate for each recognition indicator.

Heat can involve both protagonists

The displayed categories include an indicator for whether Jason and Lucia are together. That means police recognition is not limited to a single person or a single object. The relationship between the two protagonists can itself be part of what officers are looking for.

The footage does not spell out every possible group configuration or guarantee that separating the pair will clear all recognition. It does show that the game treats “together” as a meaningful recognition state and presents changing that state as potential counterplay.

Wanted level vs. heat: the differences at a glance

Comparison point Wanted level Heat
What it measures Intensity of the active law-enforcement response Recognition information police retain about the suspects
HUD signal Large star meter Smaller recognition indicators beneath the stars
Time horizon Immediate pursuit or search Lingering risk after direct contact is broken
Typical counterplay shown Break line of sight, leave the active search, and avoid renewed contact Change the recognized vehicle, clothing, face covering, or group configuration
What is confirmed Six-star meter appears in current footage Clothing, face, vehicle, and “together” recognition indicators appear in current footage
What is not published Exact crime-to-star thresholds and the response for each level Exact timers, decay rules, and conditions that clear every indicator

The table describes the system as shown, not a promise that every evasion option will work in every situation. Rockstar can still change the interface and rules before release or in later updates.

How the two systems work together

A useful way to understand the design is to follow a hypothetical sequence while keeping the confirmed elements separate from assumptions.

  1. An incident occurs. A crime is committed, but it only becomes a police matter after someone witnesses it or an alarm reports it. That reporting requirement is the part Rockstar has explicitly described.
  2. The active response begins. The star meter communicates the intensity of the response. Officers may be searching, pursuing, or reacting to the reported event, but the exact response attached to each star has not been published.
  3. The player breaks immediate contact. Driving out of view or otherwise disrupting the pursuit can reduce the direct chase. This is the traditional wanted-level problem: stop officers from maintaining contact.
  4. Recognition information remains relevant. If the HUD still shows clothing, face, vehicle, or together indicators, police have attributes that can connect a later sighting to the suspects. The star meter no longer tells the whole story.
  5. The player changes what can be recognized. The footage presents a vehicle swap and appearance changes as counterplay. These actions are intended to reduce the value of the clues police retained, although no guaranteed clearance recipe has been documented.
  6. A later encounter tests the remaining heat. If officers identify the suspects again, the game may re-establish an active response. The exact trigger distance, timer, and decay behavior remain unconfirmed.

This flow explains why a successful escape can be partial. Ending the immediate pursuit and removing the information that can restart it are separate objectives.

How to lose heat in GTA 6, based on the footage

There is no official list of guaranteed heat-clearing steps yet. The following approach uses the recognition categories Rockstar has shown and labels each action according to what is actually demonstrated.

1. Break the active pursuit first

When stars are active, prioritize the immediate police response. Use streets, terrain, buildings, and turns to prevent officers from keeping direct visual contact. The footage supports the general distinction between an active chase and lingering recognition, but it does not establish a specific hiding spot, search radius, or number of seconds required.

Do not treat a temporary loss of sight as proof that every recognition indicator has cleared. Check the entire HUD rather than watching only the stars.

2. Change the vehicle when the vehicle indicator remains

Vehicle recognition is one of the clearest forms of counterplay shown. In the sequence covered by GamesRadar, swapping vehicles removes the vehicle recognition displayed in the HUD. A vehicle change therefore addresses a clue that can otherwise reconnect the suspects to the incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not the same as claiming that any vehicle swap instantly ends the pursuit. If stars are still active, the police response remains a separate problem. The demonstrated benefit is that the old vehicle is no longer the recognized vehicle represented by that indicator.

3. Alter clothing or face presentation

The HUD separately identifies clothing and face. Rockstar’s footage presents changing appearance as another way to counter recognition. Depending on what is available in the final game, that can mean changing clothes, using or removing a face covering, or otherwise altering the visible attributes police are tracking.

The exact menu path, locations, animation time, and clearance rules have not been published. Avoid guides that promise a fixed number of seconds or claim that one particular disguise always resets heat; those details are not established by the shown material.

4. Consider the “together” state

Because the HUD includes whether Jason and Lucia are together, the pair’s configuration can matter independently of clothing and vehicle. The footage indicates that changing this configuration is intended as counterplay. It does not confirm how far apart the protagonists must be, whether one character can remove every other indicator, or how missions constrain separation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the final game allows the protagonists to move independently during free roam, treating the together indicator as a separate clue will be more reliable than assuming one character’s appearance change solves the entire problem.

5. Recheck every indicator before returning to normal activity

A cautious escape routine is to wait until the immediate star response has subsided, inspect the recognition icons, and then remove the clues that remain. This is a decision framework, not a published timer. Rockstar has not stated whether indicators decay one at a time, disappear together, or can return when a patrol sees a familiar attribute.

What Rockstar has confirmed, and what remains unknown

Question Current status
Does GTA 6 use a wanted-star meter? Yes. The meter is shown in Rockstar’s current gameplay footage.
How many stars are displayed? Six stars are shown in the 2026 gameplay reveal. GTA V used five.
When is a crime reported? Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said it must be witnessed or trigger an alarm before being reported.
Does the game track recognition separately? Yes. Clothing, face, vehicle, and whether the protagonists are together appear as smaller indicators beneath the stars.
Can recognition persist after a chase? Yes, the intended design includes more persistent police memory, and the HUD separates recognition from the active star response.
What does each star level trigger? Not published. There is no official crime-to-star table or complete response-tier list.
How long does each heat indicator last? Not published. Exact durations and decay conditions remain unknown.
What happens at six stars? The sixth star is visible, but Rockstar has not documented its specific forces, tactics, or thresholds.
Are military units, fixed search radii, or guaranteed escape routes confirmed? No. Claims about those details should be treated as unverified until Rockstar documents them.

Common mistakes when reading the HUD

Mistake: treating stars and heat as synonyms

They are related but not interchangeable. Stars describe the active response; heat describes recognition. Saying “the wanted level is gone” does not necessarily mean every clue has been forgotten.

Mistake: assuming a vehicle change solves everything

The shown vehicle swap addresses the vehicle recognition icon. It does not establish that clothing, face, or together indicators also disappear, nor does it prove that an active star response ends immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: expecting a fixed timer

No official timer has been supplied for the recognition categories. A guide that states an exact number of seconds, a guaranteed decay sequence, or a universal search radius is going beyond the currently documented evidence.

Mistake: assuming every crime produces the same star pattern

Rockstar has confirmed the six-star interface, not the thresholds for each offense. The game may weigh circumstances differently, but until an official rules table exists, precise claims are speculation.

Mistake: confusing a witness with an already active pursuit

The reported incident is the starting point. A crime that has not been witnessed or has not triggered an alarm may not yet produce the active response represented by stars. Once reported, the situation can change quickly.

A practical evasion checklist

Use this checklist when the HUD shows both stars and recognition indicators:

  • Identify whether police still have direct contact or are only retaining recognition information.
  • Break the active response before attempting a cosmetic or vehicle change.
  • Check the vehicle indicator and change vehicles if it remains active.
  • Check clothing and face indicators; alter the visible appearance where the game permits it.
  • Check the “together” indicator and account for whether Jason and Lucia are still being treated as a pair.
  • Do not rely on a claimed timer, search radius, or top-level response unless Rockstar officially confirms it.
  • Re-read the HUD after each change instead of assuming one action clears every category.

The checklist is intentionally conservative because the final game’s exact rules are not yet public. It follows the categories Rockstar has shown without pretending that an unverified sequence is guaranteed.

Where the current information comes from

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page places the game in Leonida and Vice City and lists PlayStation 5 among the platforms. The current police-system details come from Rockstar’s Extended Look and the 2026 gameplay reveal, with interpretation and quotations reported by GamesRadar, PC Gamer, and GTA Intel. Those materials show the interface and design direction; they do not replace a final rules guide.

For players planning to play Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5, the important qualification is that the footage represents a pre-release presentation. Menus, indicator behavior, star thresholds, and persistence rules can still change before launch or through updates. Treat the six-star meter and recognition categories as the current documented picture, not as a complete technical specification.

The practical takeaway

In GTA 6, losing the wanted level should be understood as ending the immediate police response, while losing heat means removing or outlasting the clues that let police recognize the suspects afterward. Watch the stars for the live pursuit, then inspect the smaller icons for vehicle, clothing, face, and together-state recognition. The system’s defining feature is that those two outcomes no longer have to happen at the same moment.
