Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want a complete, immediately playable single-player story about Arthur Morgan, loyalty and the end of the American frontier. Choose Grand Theft Auto VI if you specifically want a contemporary crime drama led by Jason and Lucia and are willing to wait for its announced console launch.
These games are not interchangeable versions of the same idea. One is a finished historical tragedy whose emotional power comes from a single protagonist’s changing ideals; the other is an unreleased crime partnership whose full campaign, pacing and performance cannot yet be judged. Your best choice depends first on when you want to play, which platforms you own and whether you prefer reflective western drama or modern criminal satire.

Availability, platforms and timing
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now
Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2 worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018. The PC edition followed on November 5, 2019. Red Dead Online was included with the console launch, although this comparison concerns the single-player story.
That platform spread makes the game a practical recommendation for someone who wants to start immediately. You do not need current-generation hardware, and you do not have to plan around an unreleased date. Platform editions, retail stock and prices can change, so check the store serving your region before purchasing.
GTA VI has a documented console launch, not a documented PC launch
Rockstar’s current support information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for the planned release. It gives November 19, 2026 as the launch date in the present release plan. No cited Rockstar announcement confirms a PC edition or a PC release window, so a PC player should not treat one as promised.

Setting and tone: a dying frontier versus a modern criminal conspiracy
Red Dead Redemption 2: America, 1899
The story begins as the Wild West era is ending. Lawmen are pursuing the last outlaw gangs, and people who refuse to surrender or adapt are being killed. Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee after a robbery goes wrong in the western town of Blackwater.
The historical setting gives the campaign a built-in source of tension: the gang’s way of life is disappearing even when its members are still capable of surviving in the wilderness. The drama is therefore about more than escaping a posse. It asks what loyalty means when the ideals that once held a group together no longer fit the world around it.
Expect a reflective western mood, moral pressure and a story that spends time with the consequences of decisions. Its seriousness comes from the contrast between personal devotion and social change, not from a simple hero-versus-villain plot.
GTA VI: Leonida and Vice City
Grand Theft Auto VI moves to Rockstar’s fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City, in a contemporary crime world. Rockstar’s Trailer 2 description says Jason and Lucia know that “the deck is stacked against them.” After an easy score goes wrong, they land in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida and must rely on each other to survive.
That premise points toward a faster, more contemporary crime narrative: two people whose relationship is central to the danger around them. The setting supports themes associated with modern criminal economies, status and pressure, but the complete campaign has not been released. It would be speculation to declare its final tone, depth or ending from trailers alone.
Rockstar says the trailer footage was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5. That establishes the source of the published footage, not a guarantee about final performance on every console or about an eventual PC build.
How the protagonists shape each story
Arthur Morgan’s single arc
Red Dead Redemption 2 stays closely tied to Arthur Morgan, a senior member of the Van der Linde gang. Rockstar’s official description frames the central conflict directly: Arthur must choose between his ideals and loyalty to the gang that raised him.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBecause the campaign follows one principal viewpoint, changes in Arthur’s beliefs carry unusual weight. The gang’s internal divisions are experienced through his relationships and obligations. The result is a focused character study: survival matters, but so do the standards Arthur is willing to keep when obedience becomes harder to justify.
Rockstar’s exact setup is concise: “After a robbery goes terribly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee.” The rest of the campaign develops the consequences of that flight and the pressures that steadily pull the group apart.
Jason and Lucia’s partnership
GTA VI centers on Jason and Lucia rather than a lone lead. Their partnership is not a cosmetic switch in viewpoint; Rockstar’s published premise makes mutual reliance part of the core problem. An easy score fails, a wider conspiracy closes around them, and survival depends on how they work together.
A two-protagonist structure can create contrast, conflict and complementary motivations, but the available material does not establish how often control changes, how their arcs resolve or whether one character receives more narrative focus. Those are campaign questions that can only be answered after release.

Which game has the better story?
For a story you can evaluate as a whole, Red Dead Redemption 2 has the stronger case because its narrative is finished and its themes are fully presented. Its tragedy is built around a clear historical transition, a defined protagonist and the collision between loyalty and changing ideals.
GTA VI may ultimately be the better match for someone who prefers a modern setting and a relationship-driven crime plot. At present, however, calling it the better story would confuse an announced premise with a completed campaign. There are no authoritative campaign reviews, final story assessments or equivalent evidence in the published material yet.
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A complete beginning-to-end narrative | Red Dead Redemption 2 | You can play the finished campaign now. |
| A single protagonist’s moral evolution | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Arthur’s ideals and loyalty organize the drama. |
| A contemporary crime partnership | GTA VI | Jason and Lucia’s dependence on each other is the published premise. |
| Confidence about quality before buying | Red Dead Redemption 2 | GTA VI’s complete campaign is still unevaluated. |
| Experiencing a major new launch | GTA VI | It is the forthcoming title, provided you own the documented consoles and accept the wait. |
Which is better for a serious single-player campaign?
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if “serious” means patient character development, a tragic direction and a story concerned with whether a community can preserve its values while the outside world changes. Arthur’s personal choices are inseparable from the gang’s decline, so the campaign’s emotional stakes accumulate over time.
Choose GTA VI only if your definition of serious storytelling includes a contemporary partnership under criminal pressure and you are comfortable reserving judgment until the game is available. The premise promises meaningful dependence between Jason and Lucia, but it does not yet prove the campaign’s length, pacing, mission variety or thematic resolution.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is GTA VI worth waiting for if you have not played RDR2?
Wait if all of these describe you
- You own, or plan to buy, a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You specifically want a present-day crime story rather than a historical western.
- You are comfortable waiting for the announced launch and then considering final reviews.
- You would rather experience a new Rockstar release than begin an older, complete campaign.
Play RDR2 first if any of these describe you
- You want a substantial single-player story immediately.
- You play on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
- You prefer one protagonist whose values and relationships drive the plot.
- You want to make a purchase based on a fully known campaign rather than a pre-release premise.
Playing Red Dead Redemption 2 first does not require you to abandon GTA VI. The stories use different settings, protagonists and historical contexts, so starting the finished western does not make the later modern crime story redundant. It simply gives you a complete Rockstar narrative while you decide whether GTA VI’s final version meets your expectations.
Can you play GTA VI on PC?
Not according to the currently documented launch information. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the cited materials do not announce a PC edition or date. Do not buy hardware or make a release-timing decision on the assumption that a PC version is guaranteed.
A future PC announcement could change that answer, but it would be a new piece of official information. Until Rockstar publishes one, the accurate answer is that PC availability is unconfirmed.

Start with Red Dead Redemption 2
If your goal is a finished Rockstar open-world story, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the direct substitute for waiting. Buy the edition for your available platform, then approach it as a long-form character drama rather than as a preview of GTA VI. The western setting and Arthur’s central arc give it a distinct identity.
Rockstar also names the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide as an official companion. It is useful for readers who want to explore the world systematically, find optional content or track completion without turning the first story playthrough into a checklist. Availability of physical guides varies by region.
Do not treat an unverified GTA VI preorder as a requirement
Retail listings, editions and prices can change before launch. The safe purchase decision is to wait for a verified listing in your country and confirm the platform shown by the retailer. There is no need to buy an unconfirmed PC version or rely on a rumored edition to make the comparison today.
What is still unknown about GTA VI
The published information establishes the setting, the two lead characters, the broad criminal-conspiracy premise, the announced date and the two launch-console families. It does not establish:
- Whether a PC edition will be released, and if so, when.
- The campaign’s length, mission count or final structure.
- How control and narrative focus will be divided between Jason and Lucia.
- Final performance targets, resolution or frame-rate behavior on each console.
- Review scores, launch-day reception, retail pricing or later editions.
- Any direct story connection to Red Dead Redemption 2.
Keeping those limits in view prevents a common mistake: treating a trailer’s promise as proof of a finished game’s quality. GTA VI can be an excellent choice for its setting and premise, but that judgment belongs after the campaign is playable and independently assessed.
A practical decision checklist
- Check your hardware. If you have only a PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the immediately available option. GTA VI’s documented launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Choose the era you want. Select the 1899 American frontier for a western about decline and loyalty; wait for Leonida if you want contemporary crime and Vice City.
- Choose the character structure. Pick Arthur’s single, deeply focused arc or wait for Jason and Lucia’s partnership.
- Decide how much uncertainty you accept. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a known, finished campaign. GTA VI still requires patience for release and final evaluation.
- Buy for the story, not rumors. Ignore unsupported map, mission, price and PC-date claims until Rockstar confirms them.
For most readers asking what to play now, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the answer. For readers asking whether to reserve their next major Rockstar experience for a modern two-person crime story, GTA VI is the one to watch—but its final verdict must wait for the finished game.
