There is no fair, firsthand verdict on Grand Theft Auto VI versus The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time yet: GTA VI is still scheduled for November 19, 2026, according to current Rockstar listings and the Xbox listing. A useful comparison instead asks what each game is designed to do, what its original or current edition offers, and how its world, controls, story, and technology fit its era.
Version labels matter. Ocarina of Time first appeared on Nintendo 64 in November 1998; Nintendo now also lists a substantially updated Nintendo Switch 2 edition for November 5, 2026. That future edition is not the original N64 presentation, and GTA VI has not yet been publicly playable.

Start by identifying the versions and dates
The title can refer to more than one experience. This comparison distinguishes the original Nintendo 64 release of Ocarina of Time from Nintendo’s newly listed Switch 2 edition. For GTA VI, it uses only details Rockstar and platform listings disclose before release.
| Game or edition | What is established | What that means for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64) | Nintendo identifies it as an action-adventure released in November 1998. Nintendo’s developer interview | Use it to discuss the game in its original hardware and historical context. |
| Ocarina of Time (Nintendo Switch 2 edition) | Nintendo’s US listing gives a November 5, 2026 release date and describes overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. Nintendo product listing | This is a future, updated edition, not a like-for-like view of the 1998 presentation. Nintendo’s listing does not establish resolution or frame rate. |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | Current Rockstar and Xbox listings give November 19, 2026 as the release date. Xbox lists Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar support describes digital and physical versions. Rockstar support | Until launch, gameplay, performance, quality, and the actual comparative experience remain unverified. |
Release dates can change. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 announcement listed May 26, 2026, but that older date has been superseded by the current November listings. The same announcement reported “over 440 million units sold-in worldwide” for the Grand Theft Auto franchise; that is a series figure, not a GTA VI sales total. Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 announcement

Compare design aims before comparing freedom
“Freedom” can describe different things. The question is not simply which game has the bigger map or more activities. Ask what the game invites the player to do, how it directs attention, and how much control it gives over the order and pace of play. The available official material establishes Ocarina of Time as an action-adventure, while it does not yet allow a full account of GTA VI’s playable systems.
- For Ocarina of Time, consider how exploration, action, and adventure work together in the original N64 design. Do not treat the updated Switch 2 edition’s announced camera and control changes as evidence of how the 1998 version played.
- For GTA VI, separate confirmed premise and characters from predictions about activities, mission structure, or player choice. Trailers and store descriptions are not substitutes for playing the finished game.
- For either title, distinguish freedom to explore from freedom to change the story, solve challenges, or approach objectives. Those are related but not interchangeable measures.
World structure: describe the route, not just the scale
World size alone does not explain how a game feels to navigate. Compare how places connect, how the game guides movement, and what exploration rewards. A large setting can still direct the player through a strongly authored sequence; a more compact setting can offer meaningful discovery.

- Will take full advantage of the power of new generation systems and PC to deliver across-the-board enhancements including increased resolution and graphical detail, denser traffic, greater draw distances, upgraded AI, new wildlife, and advanced weather and damage effects for the ultimate open world experience.
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.
- Includes Grand Theft Auto Online, the ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe.
- All new content and gameplay created and released since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online including new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations
For the original Ocarina of Time, make claims about the N64 game, not the visual treatment of the Switch 2 listing. Nintendo’s current product page describes updated presentation, but it does not supply a detailed account of how that edition changes the structure of the world. For GTA VI, judgments about map layout, traversal, and exploration rewards should wait until the game is available and those systems can be observed.

Controls and camera: account for the edition
Controls shape what actions are practical and how clearly a player reads a space. Camera behavior is part of that experience, not a cosmetic detail: it affects orientation, targeting, and the view of nearby threats or objects.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.

Nintendo says the Switch 2 edition has enhanced controls and modern camera movements, alongside its visual and audio updates. Those are Nintendo’s descriptions, not independent performance findings, and they should not be projected backward onto the original N64 release. Rockstar and Xbox have not provided a basis here for comparing GTA VI’s hands-on controls or camera with either version of Ocarina of Time. A verdict on responsiveness, comfort, or precision requires actual play.
Narrative: separate confirmed story framing from speculation
Compare how each game frames its characters and the player’s activity, but keep the evidence level clear. Nintendo’s official material establishes the original game’s identity and release context; the Switch 2 listing announces presentation changes such as voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue. These disclosures do not, by themselves, establish how the updated edition’s full narrative experience compares with GTA VI.

Before launch, GTA VI’s story and playable experience should not be inferred from trailer interpretation. Use only officially disclosed premise and named protagonists when describing it, and label any expectation as a prediction rather than a fact. The finished game is needed to judge pacing, characterization, and how freely story progress can be approached.

Ocarina of Time arrived in a different technical and design context from a 2026 release. Nintendo’s history describes its N64 launch as “setting new standards and breaking pre-order records for any videogame to date.” That is Nintendo’s characterization; the history page gives no numerical pre-order figure. It is useful evidence of the publisher’s account of the game’s reception, not a standalone measure of its quality today. Nintendo’s November 1998 history
Best Value
Historical comparison works best when it asks what was notable at the time and which conventions later games adopted or refined. It should not claim that one title invented every convention associated with modern adventure games, nor treat current expectations as if they were available to developers in 1998.
Technical presentation depends on platform and purpose
Technical fidelity is a context-dependent part of the comparison, not a quality score that automatically favors the newer game. For the original N64 version, discuss its presentation as a product of its era. For the Switch 2 edition, report only the listed upgrades: completely overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. Nintendo’s product page does not state resolution, frame rate, or comparative performance.
For GTA VI, the release date and platform listing establish where and when it is expected, not how it will run or look in practice. Do not turn platform-generation assumptions into performance claims. Once both the game and the relevant Ocarina edition can be played, a meaningful technical comparison should name the platform, edition, and conditions rather than treating “newer” as a benchmark.

Purchase format is a separate practical issue from game design. Rockstar says the GTA VI physical box contains a digital download code and no disc. That means “physical version” describes the box format; it does not mean the package includes a game disc. Rockstar support describes both digital and physical versions, while Nintendo’s US listing shows physical and digital editions of the Switch 2 game. Availability and exact packaging can vary by market.
Quick Recap
A fair comparison checklist
- Name the edition: original N64 Ocarina of Time or the listed Switch 2 edition.
- Anchor each judgment to the game’s own release context and stated design purpose.
- Compare shared dimensions—world structure, controls and camera, narrative framing, player agency, and presentation—without assuming the games pursue identical goals.
- Mark what is confirmed, what is a publisher description, and what remains unknown before GTA VI launches.
- Do not use franchise sales, technical generation, or nostalgia as a shortcut for judging the individual games.
