It is reasonable to expect the campaign to be the centerpiece of the initial release, but details such as difficulty options, accessibility implementation, save systems and post-launch story content are not stated in Rockstar’s published announcement.

GTA 5 also has the benefit of a known feature set. You can make a purchase decision based on the game that exists rather than on an announced campaign whose final reception and technical behavior are still unknown.

GTA Online is an established service
Take-Two describes GTA 5 as an ever-changing world driven by regular free updates. GTA Online became a standalone version on March 15, 2022, and GTA+ launched in March 2022. Take-Two’s investor presentation also states that GTA Online is free with every copy of Grand Theft Auto V.
Those facts make GTA 5 the dependable online recommendation. The service has a documented operating history, a standalone option and an update model that has continued for years. The exact content, pricing and availability of any particular edition can depend on the platform and region, so verify the current store listing before purchasing.
Scale and staying power
Take-Two reported in 2026 that the Grand Theft Auto series had sold nearly 230 million units in. It also reported that the series reached $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history. Choose GTA 5 if you want a known story now

It is also the logical entry point for someone who has never played a modern Grand Theft Auto and does not want to wait for a release that is still in the future.
There is no need to treat GTA 5 as a substitute for GTA 6’s setting. It is a separate campaign with a different cast and location. Buying GTA 5 now gives you an existing game; it does not provide early access to GTA 6 or confirm that GTA 6 will inherit every GTA 5 feature.

Yes, if you want an online Grand Theft Auto experience now and value a mature service over launch uncertainty. Take-Two documents regular free updates, the standalone GTA Online release from March 15, 2022 and GTA+ from the same month. Those are concrete signs of an established online product rather than a mode that is only announced.
GTA 5 Online is especially practical in three situations:
- You want to play with friends before GTA 6 launches.
- You want a known online mode with a long update history.
- You are buying a game for a console on which GTA 6 has not been confirmed.

Does GTA 6 have online yet?
GTA 6 online features are not confirmed in Rockstar’s published announcements. Rockstar has confirmed a single-player experience, but those announcements do not provide a GTA 6 multiplayer feature list, online launch date, subscription requirement or relationship to GTA Online.
