Why GTA V currently wins
GTA V has a finished, countable radio system that can be judged on the same terms as a released game. The 241-track figure was reported by Rockstar music supervisor Ivan Pavlovich and contemporaneous production coverage in 2013. The music is organized into 15 dedicated music stations, while two additional stations provide talk programming. That scale gives Los Santos a dependable rotation for long drives, short missions and repeated playthroughs.
The soundtrack was not assembled as a detached playlist. Rockstar’s production team built the music around the game’s Southern California setting, and Pavlovich described the goal plainly: “It reflects the environment in which the game is set.” The result is a radio lineup that functions as environmental storytelling. Station identity, DJ presentation and song choice all help distinguish Los Santos neighborhoods, highways and social spaces without requiring a cutscene to explain them.

A radio catalog backed by an original score
GTA V was the first entry in the series with an original score. Its composers created more than 20 hours of mission and gameplay music, giving the game a second musical layer alongside licensed radio. That score can support action and pacing while the stations establish place and personality. For players who judge a soundtrack by the whole audio experience rather than by songs alone, this documented integration is a major advantage.
The important distinction is evidence. GTA V’s station structure, track total and score approach are known quantities. You can discuss its depth without treating an announcement, teaser or separate album as a substitute for the in-game catalog.
What GTA VI has confirmed so far
Rockstar has previewed six GTA VI stations. Their concepts suggest a deliberately wider contemporary spread than a single nostalgia-focused lineup, but the previews do not constitute a final tracklist.

Podcasts change how listening works
GTA VI introduces on-demand podcasts, a first for the series according to Rockstar’s announcement. They can play in vehicles and on foot through headphones or earbuds. That is more than an extra station: it gives players a selectable spoken-word format when they are walking, exploring or simply do not want a music rotation.
Podcasts therefore give GTA VI the clearest feature advantage. They broaden the soundtrack from “what the car radio happens to play” to “what the player chooses to hear,” while preserving the series’ satirical talk-media tradition in a format designed for modern listening.

2. World-building fit
GTA V’s curation is explicitly tied to Los Santos and Southern California. Pavlovich’s explanation matters because it describes an organizing principle, not just a collection of songs: the radio is meant to sound like the place the player is inhabiting.
GTA VI’s previewed lineup points toward a different kind of setting portrait. Vice City and the wider Leonida region can support modern Latin music, Southern rap, country, African sounds, pop and metal in the same fictional state. That spread may feel more geographically layered than GTA V’s California focus, but the final judgment depends on how the stations are programmed and presented in the released game.
3. Variety for different listeners
GTA V’s advantage is station-level depth. A player can move among a large established lineup and expect each channel to maintain a recognizable identity over many hours. Its documented scale is especially valuable to players who keep the radio on during side activities or replay the story repeatedly.

4. Radio and original score
GTA V has the stronger documented score integration. Its more-than-20-hour original score was created for missions and gameplay, so licensed radio and reactive gameplay music serve different purposes within one audio design.
GTA VI’s final score, the amount of original gameplay music and the way that score transitions with radio have not been fully documented. It would be premature to award it an advantage or assume that the newer game will reproduce GTA V’s approach.
5. Listening format
Traditional car radio remains the clearest GTA V experience: choose a station, drive and let the programming shape the journey. GTA VI adds choice outside the vehicle. On-demand podcasts can follow the player on foot through headphones or earbuds, so listening no longer depends on occupying a car or accepting a station’s current sequence.
If “best radio soundtrack” means the richest collection of songs, GTA V leads. If it means the most flexible in-game audio system, GTA VI has the stronger confirmed feature.

What the separate GTA VI album does—and does not—tell you
Rockstar Games has announced a separate 34-track release titled Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, scheduled for 19 November 2026 in vinyl and CD formats. That is a soundtrack product, not a published count of GTA VI’s in-game radio tracks.
An album track can be part of a curated promotional release without appearing on a radio station, and the announcement does not say that all 34 tracks will play in vehicles. Treating the album’s number as GTA VI’s radio total would overstate what Rockstar has confirmed. The same distinction matters when comparing physical editions: a vinyl or CD tracklist and an interactive game catalog answer different questions.
Which game should different listeners choose?
Choose GTA V if you want proven depth
- You want a complete, documented station lineup rather than previews.
- You spend many hours driving and care about low repetition across repeated sessions.
- You value the combination of licensed stations, talk radio and a substantial original score.
- You want a soundtrack whose Southern California design has been explicitly described by its music supervisor.
Watch GTA VI if you want newer formats or specific genres
- You are most interested in modern Latin, outlaw country, African music, classic metal, modern pop or old-school Southern rap and hip-hop.
- You want podcasts that can play in cars and while walking with headphones or earbuds.
- You prefer a Vice City and Leonida setting with a deliberately broad regional and contemporary palette.
- You are comfortable waiting for the final station list and song catalog before making a numerical judgment.

- Prioritize confirmed quantity: choose GTA V, because its 241 licensed tracks and station structure are documented.

What remains unknown before GTA VI can be judged fairly
- The final number of GTA VI radio stations.
- The complete in-game tracklist and total number of licensed songs.

- Whether every track on Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album will appear on an in-game station.
- The final original-score length and how that score will interact with radio during missions and free roam.
These are not minor omissions. They determine whether GTA VI is merely more modern in presentation or genuinely deeper as a long-term radio soundtrack. Any article claiming a definitive GTA VI song total before Rockstar publishes it is making a claim beyond the confirmed information.
Final answer: is GTA 6’s soundtrack better than GTA 5’s?
Not yet. GTA V is the evidence-backed winner as of 16 October 2026 because its 241-track radio catalog, 15 music stations, two talk stations and more-than-20-hour original score are documented and playable as a complete package.
GTA VI has the more intriguing design: six previewed stations that span modern and regional genres, plus podcasts available in vehicles and on foot. Those features could make it the better overall listening system once the game’s complete catalog is known. For now, however, GTA V wins the radio soundtrack comparison, while GTA VI remains the one to watch.
