The short answer: GTA VI changes the series at every major level. Its crime story centers on Jason and Lucia as a pair who must rely on one another after a robbery goes wrong. Its world combines Vice City with the broader fictional state of Leonida, rather than concentrating on Los Santos and the surrounding southern San Andreas landscape. Official trailer footage also points to a more relationship-driven, travel-heavy experience built for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

That does not mean every difference is known. Rockstar has not published a definitive acreage figure, a size multiplier against GTA V, a complete list of regions or activities, final PC requirements, a review score, or a full technical specification. Any comparison that presents those details as settled fact is going beyond the available information.

Story: a partnership replaces GTA 5’s three-way structure
GTA VI is built around Jason and Lucia
Rockstar’s official synopsis describes Jason and Lucia as people who already understand that the odds are against them. An easy score goes wrong, leaving them on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America and inside a criminal conspiracy that stretches across Leonida. The pair must rely on each other if they are going to survive.
That wording establishes more than two names on a character list. The relationship is a central story mechanism: the consequences of a failed job affect both characters, and the conspiracy extends beyond one neighborhood or one isolated target. The setting is presented as a connected criminal network across a state, with Vice City as its principal urban anchor.
The synopsis does not reveal the ending, the complete supporting cast, the number of missions, or every faction involved. It also does not state exactly how often control changes between Jason and Lucia. Those details should wait for a finished game and final documentation.
GTA V uses three protagonists
GTA V is the previous Los Santos-era entry and is defined by its established three-protagonist design. That structure lets the campaign move among three playable leads whose separate situations intersect. The contrast with GTA VI is therefore structural rather than merely cosmetic: GTA V distributes the campaign across three perspectives, while GTA VI presents Jason and Lucia as a pair whose cooperation is part of the premise from the outset.
It is possible to compare the designs without inventing a new plot summary for GTA V. The useful distinction is how each game frames criminal activity. GTA V’s campaign is a multi-lead ensemble set around Los Santos and southern San Andreas. GTA VI’s official description emphasizes a duo, mutual dependence and a conspiracy extending across Leonida.
Can you play as both Jason and Lucia?
Both Jason and Lucia are confirmed as central characters, and official footage presents them together in scenes and criminal situations. That supports the expectation that the campaign will involve both protagonists. However, Rockstar has not yet published a complete explanation of switching rules, whether every mission permits a choice, how cooperative actions are assigned, or whether one character is unavailable in particular chapters.

Until those systems are documented, treat claims about unrestricted switching, simultaneous local co-op or a specific mission-by-mission control pattern as unconfirmed. The confirmed point is the paired protagonist concept and the importance of their cooperation.
What the story difference means for players
- Players who enjoyed GTA V’s rotating three-person viewpoint should expect a tighter two-person narrative emphasis in GTA VI.
- The official premise makes the Jason–Lucia relationship a story question in its own right, not just a way to add another avatar.
- The state-wide conspiracy gives the campaign a broader geographic frame than a story described only through one city.
- Details such as mission count, branching outcomes, romance systems and the precise control model are not confirmed and should not be used to judge the games yet.
Map and setting: Vice City expands into Leonida
GTA VI returns to Vice City
Rockstar calls the setting “Vice City, USA” and places the story in Leonida, a fictional state. Vice City is the principal city, while the conspiracy is explicitly described as stretching across the state. The practical difference is a city-plus-state framework: the urban core is only one part of the world Rockstar is presenting.
Vice City is a fictional location, not a promise that the game reproduces the real state of Florida. Its name and presentation evoke a sunny coastal American metropolis, but Leonida is the canonical in-game geography. Readers should not treat fan labels for real-world counties, islands or highways as confirmed regions unless Rockstar names them.
GTA V is centered on Los Santos and southern San Andreas
GTA V’s established world is built around Los Santos, with surrounding countryside and other parts of southern San Andreas connected to the city. Its identity comes from moving between dense urban districts, suburban areas, desert terrain and rural roads within that established setting.
The comparison is therefore not simply Vice City versus Los Santos. GTA VI’s official framing emphasizes a whole fictional state, while GTA V is remembered as a Los Santos-centered world with its surrounding southern San Andreas environment. Both use a major city as an anchor, but Rockstar is describing GTA VI in broader state-level terms.

There is no authoritative answer yet. Rockstar has not released an official area measurement, a scale multiplier or a complete canonical map for GTA VI. The phrase “across the state of Leonida” indicates geographic ambition, but it does not establish how many square miles are playable or whether the map is larger than GTA V by any particular percentage.

That means fan-made maps, leaked coordinates and predicted comparisons cannot settle the question. A responsible pre-release comparison is qualitative: GTA VI is presented as a Vice City-and-Leonida world, whereas GTA V is the Los Santos-and-southern-San-Andreas world. The exact size comparison must wait for an official measurement or the released game.
Does GTA VI include the rest of Florida?
No official material says that GTA VI reproduces the real-world state of Florida. Leonida is fictional, and Vice City is its named city setting. The safest interpretation is that the game creates its own state inspired by familiar American coastal and southern imagery. Do not assume that every real Florida city, county or landmark appears in the game.
Gameplay: what official footage actually establishes
A two-character criminal partnership
Trailer footage shows Jason and Lucia operating together in criminal situations, reinforcing the story’s partnership theme. The footage supports discussing cooperation, shared risk and coordinated activity. It does not, by itself, prove a specific co-op mode, a permanent two-character control scheme or a particular system for handing equipment between them.

A larger travel space
Because Rockstar places the conspiracy across Leonida rather than in Vice City alone, travel between urban and non-urban areas is an important part of the expected experience. Official trailers show varied environments and movement through the wider setting. They do not provide a final list of every town, island, road, interior or activity, so descriptions should stay at the level of what is visibly shown or officially stated.
Activities shown in trailers are not a complete feature list
Official footage can establish that certain activities, locations or interactions appear in the trailers. It cannot establish that the visible selection represents the entire launch game, that every activity is available at any time, or that a short scene is a fully playable system rather than a scripted moment. Use the wording “shown in trailer footage” when describing an activity whose final implementation has not been documented.
“Most immersive evolution” is marketing language
Rockstar and Take-Two describe GTA VI as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series. That communicates the publisher’s positioning, not a benchmark result or technical specification. It should not be converted into claims about frame rate, loading times, artificial-intelligence behavior, world density or resolution.

What is not confirmed
- A final, exhaustive list of gameplay systems and side activities.
- Exact mission structure and the rules for changing between Jason and Lucia.
- Online mode details, launch timing or feature parity with GTA V’s online component.
- PC hardware requirements, graphics settings or a PC release date.
- A definitive map area, region count or percentage increase over GTA V.
- Review scores or a final feature-count statistic.
Platforms, launch timing and generation differences
Rockstar’s current page lists November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The same listing says the game plays best on PS5. These are current, time-sensitive details and should be checked against the live Rockstar listing before purchase because platform and date information can change.
Official Trailer 2 footage was captured on PlayStation 5. That tells you the footage represents the PS5 version, but it is not a promise of a particular resolution or frame-rate mode in the retail game. It also does not establish how the Xbox Series X|S versions will differ.
There is no PC platform in the current official listing. Do not buy based on predicted PC requirements or assume a PC launch date from previous series history. GTA V’s PC availability does not confirm GTA VI’s.

Standard and Ultimate editions
Rockstar support confirms Standard and Ultimate editions. The existence of those editions does not, by itself, establish every included item, upgrade path or regional price. Check the edition description for your territory before ordering rather than relying on screenshots or older listings.
Physical copies use a download code
The physical version is scheduled to contain a digital download code rather than a game disc. Physical availability is scheduled from November 12 to support pre-loading ahead of the November 19 launch. A code-in-box product still requires an internet connection to redeem and download the game, and the code’s region restrictions should be checked with the retailer before purchase.

Rockstar support states that digital pre-orders made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+. This is a time-limited eligibility statement tied to the support information and should be rechecked at checkout. It does not mean that every physical purchase receives the same items.

What to verify before ordering a PS5 product
- Confirm that the listing is for Grand Theft Auto VI PS5, not a GTA V bundle or an accessory.
- Check whether the package is the physical code-in-box version or a digital entitlement.
- Verify the seller, region, edition name and stated launch date.
- Read the redemption and pre-loading terms, especially if the account is registered in a different country.

Should you buy GTA VI or keep playing GTA V?
The answer depends on what you want from the series and whether you are comfortable buying before the final feature set is known. GTA V remains the known quantity: its Los Santos-centered world, three-protagonist campaign and released platform versions can be evaluated directly. GTA VI offers the new Vice City-and-Leonida setting, the Jason–Lucia partnership and current-generation presentation, but its complete systems and technical results are still pending.

Choose GTA V now if certainty matters most
GTA V is the practical choice if you want a finished campaign, an established three-lead structure or a platform version you can install today. It also gives you a known Los Santos environment instead of asking you to judge GTA VI from trailers.
Choose GTA VI if the new setting is the main attraction
GTA VI is the more relevant choice for players specifically interested in Vice City, the Leonida-wide conspiracy and a story centered on Jason and Lucia. On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, it is designed as the current-generation successor rather than a cross-generation continuation.

Waiting is sensible if your purchase depends on an exact map measurement, PC availability, detailed online features, final performance modes or a complete activity list. None of those questions is fully answered by the current official material.
How to read GTA VI comparisons without being misled
- Separate confirmation from interpretation. A named character, setting or release platform is confirmed; an inferred mechanic from a trailer is not.
- Demand a source for numbers. Treat map acreage, multipliers, frame rates and feature counts as unknown unless Rockstar publishes them.
- Keep fictional geography separate from real geography. Leonida is the game’s fictional state; it is not proof that the complete real-world state of Florida is represented.
- Check dates on purchase information. The November 19 launch, November 12 physical availability and digital pre-order terms are volatile.
- Do not infer PC support. The current platform listing does not include PC.
- Use trailer language carefully. Say an activity is shown in footage unless the final game confirms its scope and rules.
Where GTA VI fits in the series
GTA VI follows a commercially established franchise. Rockstar Games reported 440 million Grand Theft Auto series units sold worldwide in 2025, a figure included in Take-Two’s Trailer 2 press release. That number covers the series, not GTA VI pre-orders or a comparison of the two individual games, so it should not be used as a sales forecast.
The sequel’s importance comes from the changes visible in the core design: a return to Vice City, a state-wide fictional setting, a paired central relationship and a current-generation console target. Those are meaningful differences even before Rockstar publishes every technical and gameplay detail.
