Rockstar’s announced story follows Jason and Lucia through Leonida, including Vice City, and the company currently describes the game as a single-player experience. That makes GTA VI a new mainline setting and cast rather than a confirmed feature-by-feature replacement for every system in GTA V.
The useful comparison today is therefore partly factual and partly conditional. Rockstar has confirmed the release plan, platforms, premise, editions, physical packaging and selected footage details. It has not published a complete GTA VI-versus-GTA V specification for map size, mission design, artificial intelligence, vehicle systems, graphics modes or future online play.

|---|---|---|
| Where is it set? | Leonida, with Vice City featured in Rockstar’s official materials. | No official side-by-side statement about map size, density or total explorable area. |
| Who is in the story? | Jason and Lucia, a failed score and a criminal conspiracy spanning Leonida. | No confirmed claim that its character-switching or mission structure works like, or improves on, GTA V’s. |
| When and where can it be played? | Currently announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; the scheduled date is covered below. | No confirmed launch listing for other platforms. |
| What mode is announced? | Rockstar calls it a single-player experience. | No confirmation of a separate online mode or a successor to GTA Online. |
| How is it sold? | Standard and Ultimate Editions, plus a separately purchasable Ultimate Edition Upgrade. | Exact feature parity with GTA V editions is not stated. |
| Is there a disc? | The physical package contains a download code and no disc. | Retailer stock, regional pricing and current availability can change. |
| How much better will it look? | Rockstar says an August 2026 extended look was captured entirely from in-game PlayStation 5 footage. | That is not a measured frame-rate, resolution or graphics comparison with GTA V. |
Release date, delay history and launch platforms
Rockstar currently lists Thursday, November 19, 2026 as the release date. The date superseded the earlier May 26, 2026 target announced in May 2025. Rockstar’s November 6, 2025 announcement said the additional time was intended to allow further polish; its current game page and later announcements continue to use the November date. Read the dated announcement at Rockstar Newswire.
The announced launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s current Grand Theft Auto VI page does not establish a PC launch date, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One support, or a Nintendo version. Treat any retailer page or social-media claim that adds a platform as unconfirmed until Rockstar publishes it.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
What the date means for GTA V players
GTA V remains the available game while GTA VI is still upcoming. You can compare the announced premise and launch hardware, but you cannot yet compare final performance, loading behavior or complete systems through hands-on testing. A trailer or marketing page cannot establish how the finished game behaves across every console mode.
Story and setting: Jason, Lucia and Leonida
Rockstar’s official synopsis centers on Jason and Lucia after a failed score. Their situation expands into a criminal conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City prominently featured in Rockstar’s materials. Trailer 2, published May 6, 2025, repeats that premise and introduces the setting through promotional footage; the announcement is available at Rockstar Newswire.
This is the firmest story-level difference readers can identify now: GTA VI has a named two-person central cast and a new Leonida setting. Rockstar has not released a formal document explaining whether the campaign uses the same character-switching rules, mission ratings, side-activity structure or relationship systems as GTA V. Trailer scenes can suggest tone and geography, but they do not prove the underlying rules.
What you can reasonably expect from the premise
- A campaign built around Jason and Lucia rather than GTA V’s established protagonists.
- A criminal plot that moves beyond one city into the wider Leonida setting.
- Vice City as an important location, not merely a name used in a historical reference.
- A story presented by Rockstar as a single-player experience at the time of the June 2026 preorder announcement.
Those points describe announced material, not a promise that every familiar GTA V activity or narrative system returns unchanged.
Graphics and footage: what the trailers prove—and what they do not
Rockstar’s August 27, 2026 extended-look announcement says the presentation was “Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.” The first part identifies the stated capture source. The announcement’s description of the footage as the series’ “biggest, most immersive evolution” is Rockstar’s promotional characterization, not an independent benchmark. See the full announcement at Rockstar Newswire.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
In practical terms, the footage is evidence of the visual direction Rockstar is showing on PS5. It is not evidence of a locked frame-rate, resolution, loading time, HDR behavior, image-quality mode or Xbox Series X|S parity. No official source supplied for this comparison gives a controlled GTA V-versus-GTA VI test.
How to read visual comparisons responsibly
- Confirmed: Rockstar says the extended look came entirely from in-game PS5 footage.
- Reasonable impression: The trailers present a more detailed and contemporary visual target than footage associated with GTA V.
- Not confirmed: A numerical graphics advantage, a specific performance mode, a larger map, denser crowds or superior artificial intelligence.
When reviews and technical analyses appear after launch, check whether they identify console, display mode, patch version and measurement method. Until then, avoid treating trailer imagery as a specification sheet.
Gameplay systems: the important unknowns
Many “GTA 6 vs. GTA 5” searches are really asking whether familiar systems will be deeper. Rockstar has not supplied a direct feature matrix, so the safest answer is to separate the questions that have an announced answer from those still open.
Map size and world density
Leonida and Vice City are confirmed as the setting. Rockstar has not stated the map’s square-mile area, the proportion of land to water, the number of interiors, or how its density compares with GTA V. A trailer can show roads, neighborhoods and landscapes without revealing the complete boundary or the amount of playable space.
Vehicles, physics and travel
No supplied official material specifies the vehicle roster, handling model, customization limits, aircraft systems, boats, motorcycles or damage simulation. It is fair to expect driving to remain central to a Grand Theft Auto campaign, but it is not fair to label a particular physics improvement as confirmed.

Missions, activities and artificial intelligence
Rockstar has shown story situations and characters, yet it has not published the number of missions, mission-branching rules, side activities, civilian behaviors, police systems or enemy-AI changes. Those details need to come from a formal announcement or post-release testing rather than trailer interpretation.

Loading and technical performance
The announced PS5 capture source does not establish whether the final game offers performance and quality modes, what frame rates those modes target, or how quickly it streams the world. Xbox Series X|S behavior is also not documented in the supplied official materials.
Single-player is confirmed; online plans are not
Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 preorder announcement calls GTA VI “a single-player experience.” That is the current official description of the announced game mode. It does not answer whether Rockstar will release an online component later, whether one would be bundled with the campaign, or whether it would be related to GTA Online.
For comparison purposes, do not write that GTA VI includes a GTA Online successor, multiplayer at launch or a particular online economy. Those are open questions. A reader buying the game before launch should base the decision on the announced single-player campaign and avoid paying for an assumed future mode.
Editions, upgrades and the physical package
Rockstar’s support article, last updated August 18, 2026, lists Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition. It also lists an Ultimate Edition Upgrade that can be purchased separately after redemption of the Standard code. The Ultimate description refers to vehicles, weapons, apparel and other in-game items, but the exact value and availability of those items should be checked against the current listing before purchase. The support details are at Rockstar Customer Support.

Physical does not mean disc
Rockstar says the physical version is a download code in the box and contains no disc. That distinction matters if you expect to lend a disc, install without an internet connection or use a disc as proof of ownership. The code must be redeemed through the relevant platform account and then downloaded.
Code-region compatibility
Rockstar’s support guidance says redemption can depend on the region attached to the platform account and recommends buying from the country associated with that account. Before ordering an imported box, verify the code region, console account country and the retailer’s return policy. A lower price is not useful if the code cannot activate on your account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preloading and the practical launch checklist
Rockstar’s preorder announcement says digital preloading begins November 12, 2026. The support article says physical code-in-box copies are expected to become available for retailer shipping and pickup from November 12, while the box itself still contains no disc. Retailer timing can vary, so confirm the latest listing rather than assuming every store will hand over a code on the same schedule.
- Choose the console first. Confirm that your intended purchase is the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version; do not assume a last-generation or PC edition.
- Choose Standard or Ultimate. Read the current item list and decide whether the Ultimate extras justify the price for your type of play.
- Check the account region. For a physical code, match the package’s region to the country associated with your PlayStation Network or Xbox account.
- Prepare storage and broadband. Rockstar has not published the final install size in the supplied materials, so leave substantial free space and plan for a large download rather than relying on a disc.
- Use the preload window. If you buy digitally and the platform supports it, begin downloading from November 12 so the console is ready for the scheduled launch date.
- Keep the code secure. A code-in-box product can be redeemed only once; retain the receipt and packaging until activation succeeds.
Soundtrack and related announcements
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page describes Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album as featuring 34 original tracks. That is a music announcement, not a measurement of game scale or a comparison with GTA V’s soundtrack. Rockstar’s Newswire index also identifies GTA VI merchandise and a limited-edition Vice City collectible set; availability is separate from the game’s platform and edition details. Follow current announcements through the GTA VI Newswire index.
Which GTA VI version makes sense for a GTA V player?
Choose Standard if the campaign is your priority
Standard is the straightforward choice when you want the announced single-player experience and do not yet know whether you will value the Ultimate in-game items. Rockstar says the Ultimate upgrade can be bought separately after redeeming the Standard code, giving you a way to defer that decision.
Best Value
- Join the revolution as Dani Rojas and liberate your nation from Anton Castillo's oppression.
- Dive into a blockbuster experience and immerse yourself in the journey of a guerrilla revolutionary.
- Explore the largest open world in Far Cry history, including the first ever sprawling urban city.
- Discover new animal companions like Chorizo, the adorable wiener dog, to take down enemies.
- Unleash the firepower of specialized makeshift weapons and new backpacks to use against Anton's troops.
Choose Ultimate only for its listed extras
Ultimate is relevant if the currently listed vehicles, weapons, apparel and other in-game items matter to you. Do not buy it on the assumption that it unlocks a future online mode; Rockstar has not made that promise.
Choose digital for convenience, physical code-in-box for a retail purchase
Digital buyers can use the announced preload window. A physical buyer receives a retail box but still needs an internet connection to redeem the code and download the game. The physical format is not a disc-based fallback.
Choose the console you already support
Because both announced platforms are current-generation consoles, the practical differences are your existing account, storage, display setup, controller preference and regional store. Rockstar has not supplied a detailed feature split between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

- The date and platform printed on the listing match the current Rockstar announcement.
- The edition is clearly identified as Standard or Ultimate, with the included items described.
- A physical copy is labeled code-in-box and has a region compatible with your account.
- The seller states whether the item is a preorder, a digital entitlement or a physical package.
- Any claimed PC, last-generation, multiplayer or performance feature is backed by a current Rockstar announcement rather than a rumor.
Rockstar’s store listing is available at the official Rockstar Store. Retail stock, regional prices and terms can change, so confirm those details at checkout.
Bottom line for the GTA 6 vs. GTA 5 question
GTA VI is a forthcoming single-player Grand Theft Auto built around Jason, Lucia, Leonida and Vice City, scheduled for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The announced setting, protagonists, release hardware, editions and code-in-box format are real differences you can plan around now. Claims about a larger map, better AI, superior vehicle physics, specific graphics modes or an online successor remain expectations until Rockstar documents them or the finished game is tested.
