GTA 6 is a new-generation, single-player Grand Theft Auto set across the fictional state of Leonida, while GTA 5 was the previous mainline game built around Los Santos and its surrounding Blaine County. Returning players should expect a larger geographic canvas, a two-character crime story led by Jason and Lucia, and PS5/Xbox Series hardware features that GTA 5 never had at launch. Rockstar and Take-Two have confirmed the story, platforms and editions; PC availability, multiplayer plans and the eventual online roadmap remain unconfirmed.
GTA 6 and GTA 5 at a glance
| Category | GTA 6 | GTA 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Leonida, including modern Vice City and regions beyond the city | Los Santos and Blaine County in the fictional state of San Andreas |
| Story leads | Jason and Lucia, partners drawn into a statewide criminal conspiracy | Michael, Franklin and Trevor, three playable criminals whose stories intersect |
| Confirmed launch date | November 19, 2026 | September 17, 2013 (original release) |
| Confirmed launch platforms | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S | PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S through successive releases |
| Launch format | Standard Edition ($79.99) and Ultimate Edition ($99.99); physical copies contain a download code | Sold in several editions and re-releases over its lifetime; launch packaging and pricing varied by generation |
| Single-player status | Official PlayStation listing identifies a single-player experience | Includes the original single-player campaign |
| Online status | No launch multiplayer mode or post-launch online service has been confirmed in the cited official material | GTA Online became a major separate multiplayer service after the campaign launched |
The comparison is therefore less about a simple graphical upgrade and more about a generational reset. GTA 6 is designed first for current consoles, with a new state, new protagonists and a new crime plot. GTA 5 remains the established reference point, but its long life across multiple console generations makes direct feature-for-feature assumptions unreliable.

What changes in the setting: Vice City is not the whole map
Leonida replaces San Andreas as the state you explore
GTA 5 confines its fictional geography to Los Santos and Blaine County, a parody of Southern California. GTA 6 moves to Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida. Rockstar’s confirmed description includes modern Vice City plus areas outside the city, so the game is not presented as a city-only remake or a return to a single urban island.

Vice City is the recognizable anchor, but the story and travel opportunities extend across the state. The official synopsis describes a criminal conspiracy “stretching across the state of Leonida,” which establishes statewide geography as part of the narrative rather than optional background scenery. It does not, however, establish a measured land area, a specific number of towns, or a direct map-size multiplier over GTA 5.

Modern Vice City is a different era from the 1980s setting
The earlier Vice City game used a stylized 1980s version of Miami. GTA 6 is set in a modern version of Vice City. That change allows the setting to reflect contemporary communications, vehicles, businesses and criminal economies while retaining the series’ satirical approach to American culture. Rockstar has not published a complete district list or a definitive breakdown of every rural, coastal or inland region, so detailed map tours circulating before launch should be treated as unofficial.
How the story structure differs
Jason and Lucia form the central partnership
GTA 6’s confirmed protagonists are Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s synopsis says they already know the odds are against them; after an easy score goes wrong, they become entangled in a criminal conspiracy and must rely on one another. The partnership is the story’s organizing idea, not merely a pair of unrelated playable characters.
GTA 5 instead follows Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. Its campaign alternates among three protagonists with different backgrounds, personalities and criminal roles. That design lets missions shift between parallel character arcs and assemble the trio for major operations. GTA 6’s public material does not promise three protagonists or a repeat of GTA 5’s character-switching system, so players should expect the Jason–Lucia relationship to carry more of the narrative weight.

Expect a two-lead crime drama, not a confirmed remake of GTA 5’s mission formula
The available synopsis establishes mutual dependence and a statewide conspiracy, but it does not specify how often players switch characters, whether both leads are playable in every mission, or how heists are organized. Those systems may be familiar to GTA veterans, yet they are not confirmed details. A responsible expectation is a story built around two linked criminals whose decisions and survival are connected; anything more specific should wait for Rockstar’s own explanations.
Single-player is confirmed; an online successor is not
What the official listing establishes
The official PlayStation Store listing calls GTA 6 a single-player experience. That is the clearest launch expectation currently available: buyers can plan for a standalone campaign starring Jason and Lucia without needing an online subscription or a separately announced multiplayer mode to understand the product.
What has not been announced
The cited official material does not confirm GTA 6 Online, a multiplayer launch mode, cross-generation support, cross-play, a subscription requirement, or a post-launch content schedule. GTA 5’s history makes online speculation understandable, but the existence and timing of GTA Online do not prove that GTA 6 will launch with an equivalent service. Treat statements that present an online roadmap, player-count target or service transition as predictions unless Rockstar or Take-Two formally announces them.

How GTA 5 creates misleading expectations
GTA 5 launched with a campaign and later became the foundation for GTA Online, which grew into a long-running multiplayer product. That sequence is part of GTA 5’s history, not a published feature list for GTA 6. Returning players should separate what they enjoyed in GTA Online—persistent characters, businesses, competitive modes or cooperative heists—from what is guaranteed in the new game. None of those systems should be used as a purchasing requirement until they are documented for GTA 6.
Platforms, hardware and what you need to play
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are the confirmed launch consoles
Take-Two has announced a November 19, 2026 launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo version is not part of the cited launch announcement. If your current console is from the previous generation, the confirmed information does not provide a supported version for it.
PC availability is also unresolved in the official material used for this comparison. Do not treat a PC date, system-requirements list or pre-order page as confirmed unless it comes from Rockstar, Take-Two or an official platform listing.
PS5-specific features
PlayStation says the PS5 version uses the console’s DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and built-in controller speaker. It also supports Tempest 3D AudioTech and uses the PS5 SSD for near-instant load times. These are platform capabilities described by PlayStation, not a promise that every activity or weapon will use each effect in an identical way.
For a GTA 5 player moving from an older console generation, the practical changes are faster storage, more detailed controller feedback and positional audio designed for compatible headphones or speakers. The PS5 SSD benefit is most relevant when entering the world, restarting activities or moving between gameplay states; “near-instant” is PlayStation’s description and should not be read as a measured universal load time.

Xbox Series considerations
Xbox Series X|S is confirmed as a launch platform, but the cited announcement does not provide a feature-by-feature list equivalent to the PS5 description. Expect the game to be engineered for current Xbox hardware, while recognizing that Series X and Series S differ in memory, graphics capability and storage configuration. Rockstar has not published the resolution, frame-rate modes, installation size or performance targets in the supplied official information.

Editions, prices and physical availability
Standard Edition
The Standard Edition is listed at $79.99. No regional currency conversion, tax treatment, pre-order bonus or included digital extras is specified in the cited announcement, so the amount should be understood as the announced US list price rather than a worldwide final checkout total.
Ultimate Edition
The Ultimate Edition is listed at $99.99. A $20 difference from the Standard Edition is clear, but the cited announcement does not itemize the Ultimate Edition’s bonuses. Do not assume story expansions, online currency, cosmetic packs or early access are included until the official product page describes them.
Physical copies use a download code
The physical version is available through global retailers and contains a download code. That means a box on a store shelf does not necessarily contain a game disc. Buyers should check the retailer’s regional terms, the platform printed on the package and the account requirements for redeeming the code. A download-code package also requires sufficient console storage and an internet connection for installation, even though the product is sold physically.

World design and travel
GTA 5 gives players a city-and-countryside contrast within San Andreas. GTA 6 preserves the recognizable Vice City identity while broadening the setting to Leonida. The confirmed difference is geographic scope in concept—city plus state—not a published square-mile measurement. Players who valued GTA 5’s changing scenery should look for a similar urban-to-rural variety, but should not infer exact landmarks or activity density from trailers or fan maps.
Character perspective
GTA 5’s three protagonists create a rotating ensemble. GTA 6’s announced pair makes the relationship between Jason and Lucia the central lens. That may produce a more continuous partnership-focused narrative, but mission switching rules, optional character activities and ending structure have not been disclosed.
Technical presentation
GTA 5 began as a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 title and was subsequently enhanced for newer systems. GTA 6’s confirmed launch target is current-generation hardware, allowing Rockstar to design around faster storage and newer controllers from the start. PlayStation has specifically confirmed DualSense, Tempest 3D AudioTech and SSD integration for PS5; frame-rate, resolution and visual-quality modes are not stated.

Commercial context
Take-Two’s December 2023 announcement identified GTA 5 as the previous mainline entry and reported more than 190 million units sold at that time. That figure is a dated publisher-reported milestone, not a current sales total and not a forecast for GTA 6. It explains why expectations are unusually high: the new game follows one of the industry’s most widely distributed releases.

- The same three-character system: Jason and Lucia are confirmed; a third protagonist or identical switching mechanics are not.
- A measured map size: Leonida includes Vice City and areas beyond it, but no official acreage or comparison ratio is provided.

A practical buying decision for GTA 5 owners
Choose the launch console first
If you want to play on launch, plan around a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Existing PS4 or Xbox One owners should not buy a new copy expecting an upgrade path unless Rockstar publishes one. PC players should wait for an official platform announcement instead of relying on retailer placeholders.
Pick an edition based on confirmed value
- Buy the Standard Edition if your priority is the confirmed single-player game and you do not need unspecified extras.
- Consider the Ultimate Edition only after its contents are listed on an official product page; the current announcement establishes the price but not the bonus package.
- Check the format carefully if buying physically, because the package contains a download code rather than a guaranteed disc.
Set expectations for the first playthrough
Approach GTA 6 as a new story in a familiar crime-satire tradition. Expect Jason and Lucia, modern Vice City and a broader Leonida setting. Do not plan your purchase around an unannounced online economy, a specific frame-rate mode or a promised PC edition. Those decisions can be revisited when Rockstar releases concrete specifications.
Release information and source dates
Take-Two announced the November 19, 2026 release date and the PS5/Xbox Series X|S platforms. Its December 2023 announcement also described GTA 5 as the previous mainline iteration and reported the dated 190-million-unit sales milestone. PlayStation’s product information supplies the single-player designation and PS5 feature list. Rockstar’s official synopsis, accessed October 18, 2026, provides the Jason-and-Lucia premise and the Leonida-wide criminal conspiracy. These statements describe what is confirmed; they do not fill the unresolved gaps around PC, multiplayer or long-term content.
Bottom line for a GTA 5 veteran
GTA 6 should feel like a generational successor rather than a content update to GTA 5: a modern Vice City inside the larger state of Leonida, a two-lead story centered on Jason and Lucia, and a current-console presentation built around PS5 and Xbox Series hardware. The campaign is confirmed as single-player. The safest purchase decision is to choose a supported console and an edition whose contents you can verify, while treating PC timing, online plans, map measurements and performance targets as open questions.
