GTA 6 vs GTA 5 at a glance
The clearest difference is scope. GTA 5 is an established Los Angeles-inspired crime sandbox built around Los Santos, Blaine County and three switchable protagonists. GTA 6 relocates the series to Leonida, a Florida-inspired state centered on Vice City, and presents a two-lead crime story about Jason and Lucia.

That table also shows why a simple “which game is better?” answer is misleading. GTA 5 offers proven systems and a mature online community now. GTA 6 promises a new setting and generation of technology, but its final multiplayer design and many gameplay details are still unconfirmed.
How different are the GTA 6 and GTA 5 maps?
GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County
GTA 5 divides its world between the dense city of Los Santos and the more rural Blaine County. The contrast supports different kinds of play: urban driving, businesses and story missions in the city; desert roads, mountains, small settlements and open countryside outside it. GTA Online uses the same underlying world for races, missions, businesses, social spaces and player-created routines.

GTA 6’s Leonida and Vice City
GTA 6 moves to Leonida, a state that includes a modern Vice City and other regions. Rockstar’s official presentation frames the story as spreading “across the state of Leonida,” rather than remaining inside one metropolitan area. The result should be a broader geographic frame than GTA 5’s Los Santos-centered structure: a major coastal city is paired with additional communities and landscapes across a Florida-inspired state.
Vice City is not simply a remaster of the 2002 game’s map. GTA 6 is set in a modern era, so its city, transport, businesses, communications and criminal economy are being rebuilt for a contemporary setting. The official material establishes the location and its wider state context, but it does not provide a final road-mile measurement, square-kilometre figure or an authoritative percentage comparison with GTA 5.
What “bigger” can and cannot mean
Online map graphics often quote precise GTA 6 size estimates. Unless Rockstar publishes an official measurement, treat those numbers as fan calculations rather than specifications. A map can feel larger because it has more coastline, water, rural roads, settlements or interior spaces, even when its raw land area is similar. Density matters too: a compact city with many enterable or interactive locations can offer more activity than a larger but emptier surface.

- Practical expectation: the sequel’s state-wide structure should create more geographic variety than GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County pairing, but the scale cannot be responsibly expressed as “twice as big” or any other exact multiplier yet.
Story and protagonists: three criminals become a duo
GTA 5’s three-protagonist design
Rockstar describes GTA 5 as the story of a young street hustler, a retired bank robber and a terrifying psychopath whose paths converge in Los Santos. Those characters are Franklin Clinton, Michael De Santa and Trevor Philips. During the campaign, players switch among them, seeing the same criminal world from different social positions and using their distinct abilities and relationships to drive missions forward.
The structure gives GTA 5 a deliberately wide cast and an unusual rhythm. A mission can begin with Michael’s established criminal contacts, shift to Franklin’s rise through Los Santos or escalate through Trevor’s violent unpredictability. The three-way perspective also lets the game move between domestic satire, street-level ambition and chaotic outlaw comedy without relying on one narrator.
GTA 6’s Jason and Lucia
GTA 6’s announced story follows Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s store description says that, after an easy score goes wrong, the pair find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America and caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. They must rely on each other if they are to survive.

This is a more concentrated premise than GTA 5’s three-way structure. Jason and Lucia are presented as partners whose relationship is central to the story, while the state-wide conspiracy gives their crimes a larger geographic reach. Rockstar has not stated that GTA 6 will reproduce GTA 5’s exact character-switching controls, mission format or special abilities, so those systems should not be treated as confirmed.
What the change means while playing
GTA 5’s campaign constantly contrasts three protagonists. GTA 6’s confirmed material points instead to partnership, dependence and shared risk. That may produce a more continuous relationship-driven narrative, but the final mission mechanics, optional activities and progression rules remain for Rockstar to detail. The safe comparison is structural: three central criminals in GTA 5 versus a duo-led story in GTA 6.
Gameplay: what is confirmed and what is still unknown
GTA 5’s established sandbox
GTA 5 combines third-person shooting, driving, flying, melee combat, open-world exploration, property ownership and mission planning. Its campaign uses character switching, scripted set pieces and heists to connect those systems. GTA Online extends the same foundations with cooperative jobs, races, adversary modes, businesses and social activities.
Because GTA 5 has been available since 2013, players know how its progression works in practice: complete missions, earn cash and reputation, purchase vehicles or properties, unlock activities and return for new updates. The exact mix changes by edition and update history, but the ecosystem is mature and documented.
GTA 6’s demonstrated direction
Rockstar’s official GTA 6 materials establish the new setting, protagonists and crime-story premise. They do not constitute a complete feature list. A trailer shot or store-pitch sentence can communicate tone and location without confirming a mechanic that will exist in the shipped game.

Where players should expect the biggest practical change
- World context: the action moves from Los Angeles-inspired Los Santos to a Florida-inspired Leonida and Vice City.
- Narrative focus: the central relationship changes from three protagonists to Jason and Lucia.
- Generation: the announced console versions target PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S rather than the older hardware on which GTA 5 first launched.
- Unknown systems: Rockstar has not completed the public specification for GTA 6’s activities, economy or multiplayer.
Activities and interaction design
What GTA 5 already offers
GTA 5’s single-player world supports missions, random encounters, driving and flight challenges, shooting, exploration and heist preparation. Its online counterpart adds a much wider activity catalogue. Rockstar lists cooperative Heists, Stunt Races, Adversary Modes, nightclubs, arcades, penthouse parties, car meetups and other social activities.
The Heists design illustrates the depth of GTA Online’s cooperative play. Rockstar describes a four-player experience built from multi-part missions in which participants can take specialized roles such as hacking, stealth infiltration, precision driving, aerial dogfighting, sniping and skydiving. Not every online activity requires four people, but this example shows how far GTA Online has moved beyond a basic deathmatch mode.
What GTA 6 has not yet promised
GTA 6’s official store description is focused on its crime story and Leonida setting. It does not publish a catalogue equivalent to GTA Online’s documented Heists, races, businesses and social spaces. The sequel may launch with familiar activity types or introduce new ones, but neither outcome is confirmed.
For buyers, this distinction matters. A new map does not automatically mean that every GTA Online feature will return on day one, and a trailer’s visual detail does not prove that a particular shop, minigame or business can be used by the player. Wait for Rockstar’s feature announcements before treating individual activities as guaranteed.
Multiplayer: GTA Online is proven; GTA 6 Online is not fully specified
GTA 5’s documented online ecosystem
Rockstar describes GTA Online as a dynamic, ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players. It has cooperative Heists, Stunt Races, Adversary Modes, businesses, properties and social spaces, supported by years of updates. Players can spend time in public sessions, organize private activities, build a criminal business network, collect vehicles or meet others at locations such as car meetups and nightclubs.
The up-to-30-player figure is the capacity Rockstar documents for GTA Online; it is not a promise that every activity places 30 people in one mission. Cooperative Heists, for example, are structured around smaller teams, including the four-player format Rockstar describes. Session capacity and activity group size are separate limits.

GTA 6’s multiplayer status
Rockstar has not published a complete GTA 6 multiplayer specification in the official materials reviewed. There is no confirmed player count, named online product, progression model, business system, transfer policy or launch activity list to use in a factual comparison.
That means the responsible answer to “Will GTA 6 have multiplayer?” is narrower than a confident yes or no: Rockstar has not provided the full public details needed to describe its online mode. GTA 5 has a live multiplayer ecosystem today; GTA 6’s online design and timing require an official announcement.
What this means for GTA Online players
- Your GTA 5 Online character, money, properties and vehicles should not be assumed to transfer to GTA 6 unless Rockstar announces a migration policy.
- GTA 6 should not be purchased on the assumption that it launches with every GTA Online activity.
- Players who mainly want reliable cooperative missions, established businesses and a large set of social modes can continue using GTA Online while waiting for confirmed GTA 6 information.
- Players interested in a new story, new map and current-generation presentation have a separate reason to consider GTA 6, independent of its eventual online feature set.

Confirmed GTA 6 versions
Rockstar’s store listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. That is the confirmed platform and date information in the official material covered here. A PC version, older-console edition, retail bundle or specific edition bonus should not be stated as confirmed without a later announcement.
Because the date is in the future relative to this article, availability can change by region, retailer and edition. Check the current Rockstar store listing and your local retailer for stock, pricing, pre-order terms and any platform-specific details before paying.
GTA 5’s availability advantage
GTA 5 has had years of platform releases and updates, and GTA Online is already playable. The exact edition and supported features depend on the hardware and version you choose, but the practical advantage is certainty: you can buy or continue playing a known product rather than waiting for a launch-day specification.

Does GTA 5’s sales figure change the comparison?
Take-Two Interactive reported in 2026 that GTA 5 had sold more than 190 million units. That figure demonstrates the scale and longevity of the existing game, but sales volume is not a measurement of map quality, campaign length or the eventual quality of GTA 6. It does explain why GTA Online has such a large, established player base and why support for GTA 5 remains relevant to buyers deciding whether to wait.

Which game should you choose?
Choose GTA 5 if you want to play now
- You want a complete campaign with Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
- You need multiplayer today, including up-to-30-player sessions, cooperative Heists, races, adversary modes and businesses.
- You are buying for hardware other than PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and need a currently supported version.
- You prefer a known economy, activity catalogue and progression system over an unreleased specification.
Choose GTA 6 when its confirmed details match your priorities
- You want the new Leonida and modern Vice City setting.
- You prefer the announced Jason-and-Lucia partnership to GTA 5’s three-protagonist format.
- You own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and are comfortable waiting for the November 19, 2026 launch.
- You are willing to evaluate multiplayer after Rockstar publishes its player count, activities and progression details rather than buying on rumors.
Keep playing GTA Online while waiting
For many players, this is not an either-or decision. GTA Online already supplies the cooperative and social layer that GTA 6 has not yet documented. Continuing with GTA 5 Online lets you use its current activities and community while you watch for official GTA 6 announcements. When GTA 6’s online details are public, you can compare the actual launch offering instead of guessing from trailers or fan-made map measurements.
Common claims that need qualification
“GTA 6’s map is exactly a certain percentage larger”
No official map-area measurement is provided in the material covered here. Use “broader state setting” and “more geographic variety is expected” rather than an exact multiplier.
“GTA 6 Online will support a specific number of players”
GTA 5’s documented capacity is up to 30 players. GTA 6’s player count has not been published in the reviewed official sources.

Visual footage can show the setting and tone without confirming a final interactive system. Separate demonstrated scenes from mechanics Rockstar has formally described.
