GTA 5 uses a Southern California-inspired structure: the dense city of Los Santos sits alongside Blaine County’s hills, countryside and beaches. PlayStation’s overview describes those two connected areas as the campaign and online setting, giving the game a contrast between urban districts, open country and the coast.

Vice City is its signature urban center, but Rockstar’s first-trailer description explicitly says the game goes to “the state of Leonida” and to Vice City “and beyond.” That wording matters: Vice City is the headline location, not the complete confirmed extent of the game world.

What the trailers visibly establish
Official footage shows Jason and Lucia moving through busy Vice City streets, nightlife venues and criminal situations. It also shows rural and coastal Leonida settings, boats and multiple types of vehicles. Those images support a world designed around stronger contrasts between metropolitan life, waterways and less-developed areas.
The footage is evidence of locations and scenes Rockstar chose to show, not a complete catalogue of systems. It does not establish how many buildings are enterable, how every crowd behaves, how weather works, or how many activities will ship in the final release.
Is GTA 6’s map bigger than GTA 5?
There is no official square-mile or square-kilometre comparison. Rockstar calls GTA 6 “the biggest, most immersive evolution” of the series, but that is a positioning statement rather than a published measurement. No official source in the available material gives GTA 5’s and GTA 6’s map areas on comparable terms.

How GTA 5 handles its protagonists
GTA 5’s campaign follows Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Players switch between the three during the story, and missions use their different personalities, skills and relationships to create separate viewpoints on the same criminal world. The structure supports solo character scenes as well as operations involving more than one protagonist.
Jason and Lucia’s relationship is the organizing idea in GTA 6
GTA 6 centers on Jason and Lucia. Trailer 2’s official description says an easy score goes wrong, placing the pair in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. They are forced to rely on each other if they want to survive. That makes their partnership—not a trio of independently established leads—the clearest narrative change from GTA 5.

The available material confirms both characters and their cooperation. It does not yet specify every playable transition, whether control can be switched freely outside missions, or how much of the campaign is shared versus individual. Treat those details as pending Rockstar’s final explanations.
What the change means for moment-to-moment play
A two-person story can make cause and effect easier to follow: a job fails, both characters face the consequences, and their decisions are tied to a common survival problem. GTA 5’s three-way structure often shifted the viewpoint among parallel lives; GTA 6’s revealed premise instead puts the player inside a partnership under pressure.
That is a narrative expectation, not a promise that every mission will require both characters. Rockstar has shown Jason and Lucia operating together, but has not published a complete mission-structure guide.
Story and tone: a partnership inside a statewide conspiracy
GTA 6’s confirmed premise
Rockstar’s official synopsis describes the sunniest place in America turning into the darkest situation for Jason and Lucia after a supposedly easy score fails. The resulting conspiracy extends across Leonida, leaving them dependent on one another. This gives the campaign a clear escalation: a local criminal opportunity becomes a wider threat involving the entire state.
How that differs from the GTA 5 baseline
GTA 5’s official descriptions emphasize three protagonists, heists and a broad range of activities in Los Santos and Blaine County. GTA 6’s published synopsis places more weight on the bond between two characters and the consequences of a single operation going wrong. It is therefore reasonable to expect a more continuous relationship-driven thread, but not to claim that Rockstar has abandoned heists, side activities or independent missions.
Rockstar has not released the complete cast, mission count, branching structure or ending details. Avoid treating trailer scenes as a full plot outline.

World interaction and activities: what is shown versus what is promised
GTA 5’s established activity baseline
PlayStation’s GTA 5 overview lists heists alongside activities such as golf, arms trafficking, base jumping and yoga. GTA Online adds a shared Los Santos and Blaine County environment where players use custom avatars, form crews and communicate through the game’s messaging features. Those are documented parts of the GTA 5 experience.
GTA 6 footage points to denser social spaces
The trailers show crowded streets, nightlife, clubs, robberies, boats and a broad mix of vehicles. Characters are repeatedly placed in public, social and criminal situations rather than isolated set pieces. This supports an expectation of a busier-feeling world, especially around Vice City’s entertainment districts and waterways.
“Shown in footage” is the important qualification. Rockstar has not published a final list of minigames, businesses, interiors, wildlife, law-enforcement behaviors, traffic rules or side missions. The presence of a club, boat or robbery in a trailer confirms that scene exists; it does not prove a universal system is available everywhere in the game.

Vehicles and water travel
Boats and varied vehicles are visible in the official material, matching Leonida’s coastal and water-rich presentation. The footage supports vehicle variety and water-based scenes, but it does not give a final vehicle count, handling specification, customization list or map-wide transportation system.
Crowds and character interaction
Large crowds and public encounters are among the most noticeable visual differences from the older game in the trailers. They suggest that social density is a major presentation goal for GTA 6. Until Rockstar documents the underlying artificial-intelligence routines, however, it is not possible to state how crowds react, persist, remember the player or differ between districts.
Graphics, sound and console technology

Rockstar identifies Trailer 2 as captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5. That makes the footage a useful indication of the target console presentation, while still not guaranteeing that every scene reflects final release performance in every mode.

DualSense and Tempest 3D AudioTech
PlayStation says the PS5 version uses the DualSense wireless controller and Tempest 3D AudioTech to place players in Leonida’s soundscape. The announcement supports a more tactile and spatial presentation on PS5: controller features are part of the platform experience, and audio is designed to position environmental sounds around the player.

The announcement does not state the final resolution, frame-rate modes, storage requirement, accessibility menu or performance targets. Those should be checked in the final technical documentation rather than inferred from trailers.
Launch date, consoles and price
Confirmed launch platforms
GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A current-generation console from one of those families is therefore the confirmed way to play at launch.
PC availability and timing are not established by the official materials covered here. Do not assume a simultaneous PC release or a specific PC specification.
Standard U.S. price
Take-Two Interactive’s 2026 pre-order announcement lists a $79.99 U.S. standard price. That is a U.S. launch price stated in the announcement; regional pricing, taxes, editions and availability can differ, and the amount can change before release.

- Confirmation of the edition and regional price, because the cited $79.99 figure is specifically the U.S. standard price.
GTA Online continuity is still an open question
What GTA 5 provides
GTA V shipped with GTA Online, whose documented features include player-created avatars, crews, messaging and a shared Los Santos/Blaine County world. That online mode became a substantial part of the GTA 5 ecosystem.

What Rockstar has not confirmed for GTA 6
The GTA 6 materials available for this comparison do not provide a complete online-mode specification. They do not establish a launch date for an online component, character-transfer rules, progression carryover, pricing, player counts or whether the structure will mirror GTA Online.
Anyone buying GTA 6 specifically for online play should wait for Rockstar’s dedicated announcement. The single-player setting and characters are confirmed; online continuity is not.
Should you buy GTA 5 now or wait for GTA 6?
Buy or play GTA 5 now if you want a known experience
- You want an immediately available campaign with three switchable protagonists.
- You want the documented Los Santos and Blaine County world, established heists and activities such as golf, yoga, base jumping and arms trafficking.
- You specifically want the existing GTA Online feature set, including avatars, crews and the shared world.
- You are playing on hardware for which GTA 5 is already available and do not need the newest console release.
Wait for GTA 6 if its confirmed direction matches your priorities
- You want Vice City and the wider Leonida setting rather than Los Santos.
- You prefer a two-character crime story focused on Jason and Lucia’s partnership.
- You want the new-generation console presentation shown in PS5-captured footage.
- You are prepared to wait until November 19, 2026 and accept that the final activity list and online details are still pending.
Do not buy based on an unconfirmed assumption
Neither the map-size claim nor a future online feature list is established. If your decision depends on a larger measured map, a day-one PC version, transferred GTA Online progress or a specific mission count, there is not enough official information to justify that purchase assumption yet.

What is certain—and what remains unknown

The boundaries are equally important. Rockstar has not supplied a comparable map area, mission count, population statistic, animal count, complete interiors list, PC release schedule or full GTA 6 online specification. The strongest comparison is therefore about direction and confirmed foundations, not invented numbers: GTA 5 is the established Los Santos crime sandbox, while GTA 6 is a new-generation Vice City and Leonida story built around a dependent pair and a more densely presented world.
