Choose GTA 5 Online if you want a playable multiplayer world today, established activities and economy, or access to your existing online character. Choose GTA 6 if you want Rockstar’s next single-player adventure in Leonida and can use a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S when it is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
The decision is not yet a normal online-versus-online comparison. Take-Two describes GTA 6’s launch product as a “single-player experience,” while Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed a GTA VI online mode, cross-play, a PC release date or a way to move GTA 5 Online characters into the new game.

What GTA 6 is confirmed to be
A new mainline story in Leonida
GTA 6 moves the series to Leonida, the fictional state that includes Vice City. Rockstar’s official description uses the line “Only in Leonida Vice City, USA.” That means the attraction is a new setting, cast and campaign rather than a continuation of a Los Santos character’s online career.

Single-player at launch, based on the official description
Take-Two’s preorder announcement says: “Grand Theft Auto VI features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” This is the clearest official description of the launch product. It establishes a campaign, not an announced multiplayer replacement for GTA Online.
The wording does not prove that a GTA VI online mode will never exist. It does mean that buyers who are purchasing solely for multiplayer do not yet have confirmed launch features, servers, progression systems or a release date for such a mode.
Release date and console requirement
GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those are the confirmed launch platforms in the official announcements. A PS4, Xbox One or PC owner should not treat the game as compatible with their current hardware unless Rockstar announces an additional version.

An established multiplayer sandbox
GTA 5 Online is a persistent multiplayer service rather than a new release waiting for its first content cycle. Players can use a mature economy, existing characters and a broad catalog of activities with friends immediately. That maturity is its biggest advantage for someone deciding whether to keep playing or wait.
The current-generation and PC Enhanced versions keep the service available on newer hardware. Rockstar’s store information documents a migration path for eligible PC players from the legacy version to GTAV Enhanced, including both Story Mode and Online progress. Migration rules depend on the version and account being used, so read the in-game prompts carefully rather than assuming every platform combination is interchangeable.
Current-generation presentation improvements
The PlayStation 5 version lists faster loading, enhanced visuals, Tempest 3D Audio and DualSense haptic features. These improvements make GTA 5 Online a better fit for a PS5 owner than treating the older release as unchanged, although they do not turn it into GTA 6 or reset its long-established design.
GTA+ is optional
GTA+ is a membership that provides rotating benefits and selected Rockstar games. It is not required to access GTA 5 Online. Benefits are tied to the platform on which the membership is purchased, and the included benefits and pricing can change. A subscription therefore should be considered only if its current benefits matter to you on your specific console or PC Enhanced version.

How the online-versus-story trade-off works
The two products are built around different reasons to buy. GTA 5 Online rewards continuity: your existing character, account history and familiarity with Los Santos remain useful, and friends can join a service that is already operating. GTA 6 offers novelty: a new setting and a new campaign, but its multiplayer proposition is not documented yet.
That distinction matters even if you expect to buy both eventually. Keeping GTA 5 Online gives you a dependable multiplayer option while you wait. Buying GTA 6 at launch makes sense for the campaign itself, not as a guaranteed replacement for the online game. You do not have to delete one product to choose the other, and treating them as separate purchases avoids assuming that progress or memberships will connect.
Which game is better for solo story mode?
Pick GTA 6 for a new campaign
If your main question is “Which game gives me the newer story?”, GTA 6 is the forward-looking choice. It introduces Leonida and Vice City in a new mainline adventure, and its official launch description is explicitly single-player. You will need one of the confirmed current-generation consoles and must wait for the scheduled release.
Pick GTA 5 for an available story today
GTA 5 remains the choice for playing a completed, currently available campaign now. Its Story Mode is part of the GTAV product family, while GTA Online is the separate persistent multiplayer component. Buying or installing the current supported version lets you play immediately instead of waiting for GTA 6.
There is no official information establishing that GTA 6’s campaign is longer, more difficult or mechanically superior to GTA 5’s. Those qualities are expectations, not confirmed specifications, so they should not drive a purchase decision as if they were measured facts.
Is GTA 6 worth it if you only play online?
Not as a confirmed replacement today. If online multiplayer is your only requirement, GTA 5 Online is the product with documented access, progression and ongoing benefits. GTA 6 may eventually receive an online component, but the official materials reviewed do not confirm its existence at launch, its systems, cross-play support or a character-transfer path.
An online-focused player can use a simple rule:
- Need multiplayer now: stay with GTA 5 Online on a supported version.
- Want to be ready for a new Rockstar world: buy GTA 6 for its confirmed single-player experience, not for an unannounced online mode.
- Can wait: postpone the GTA 6 decision until Rockstar publishes concrete online details.
This avoids paying the announced GTA 6 base price of $79.99, before regional differences, for a feature that has not been specified.

Can you play GTA 6 on PC, PS4 or Xbox One?

No PC release date is confirmed in the official sources used for this comparison. Do not preorder a PC copy based on a retailer listing, leak or social-media claim unless Rockstar or Take-Two announces that version directly.

PS4 and Xbox One are not among the confirmed GTA 6 launch platforms. The announced launch hardware is PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Existing older consoles can remain relevant for whatever GTAV version they support, but that does not establish GTA 6 compatibility.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
These are the confirmed console paths. Check storage, account region and the exact edition before ordering, because a retailer’s listing can describe a platform or regional product differently from the version you intend to use.
Will GTA 5 Online progress carry over to GTA 6?
There is no official transfer promise located for GTA 5 Online characters, money, properties, vehicles or achievements moving into GTA 6. Treat the games as separate products unless Rockstar publishes a migration policy.
That is different from the documented PC migration to GTAV Enhanced. Rockstar’s current information covers eligible legacy-PC players moving Story Mode and Online progress into the Enhanced version of GTAV; it does not say that those characters will move into GTA 6.
Keep your Rockstar account information secure and do not trust services offering paid “early transfers.” Until an official process appears in Rockstar’s support or game interface, there is no legitimate action that can reserve a GTA 6 character based on GTA 5 Online progress.
Cost, memberships and the hardware decision
GTA 6 purchase
Take-Two announced a $79.99 base preorder price for GTA 6 in its 2026 release. That is the announced base price, not a universal final amount: taxes, currency conversion and regional pricing can produce a different total. Confirm the store region and edition at checkout.

GTA 5 Online purchase
GTA 5 Online requires access to a supported GTAV/GTA Online version. The exact purchase path depends on whether you are using PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Enhanced or an older edition. Existing owners should check whether their account already includes the version they want before buying again.
GTA+ membership
GTA+ is optional. Its rotating benefits and selected games can add value for a regular player, but they are not a prerequisite for the core decision. Membership benefits follow the platform where the subscription was purchased, so a benefit available on one platform should not be assumed to appear on another account or device.
Hardware upgrade calculation
If you currently own only a PS4, Xbox One or a PC and want GTA 6 at launch, the confirmed platform list implies an additional hardware decision. Budget for a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S as well as the game, and wait for an official PC announcement if PC is your preferred platform. If your priority is playing with friends immediately, buying new hardware solely for an unconfirmed GTA VI online mode carries more risk than continuing with GTA 5 Online.
Edition, account and platform checklist
- Match the platform first. Confirm whether you are buying the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition. A listing that says “console” without naming the platform is not enough.
- Check the account you will use. GTA 5 Online progression is tied to the relevant Rockstar and platform accounts. Sign in to the account that owns your current progress before starting any documented GTAV Enhanced migration.
- Separate migration from sequel ownership. A successful move from legacy GTAV to GTAV Enhanced does not create a GTA 6 entitlement or promise a future character transfer.
- Review regional terms. The announced $79.99 figure can differ after currency conversion, taxes or local pricing. Verify the final checkout amount and edition.
- Plan for friends’ platforms. GTA 6 cross-play has not been confirmed, so do not assume a PlayStation player and an Xbox player will share an online session.
Common buying pitfalls
- Confusing a retailer placeholder with confirmation: Store pages can appear before Rockstar announces a platform or date. Use official platform announcements for GTA 6 compatibility.

- Check your hardware. GTA 6’s confirmed launch requirement is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. PC, PS4 and Xbox One users should not assume a compatible edition exists.
- Check your progression. If you have years invested in GTA 5 Online, keep that version available. PC players moving from legacy GTAV to Enhanced should use Rockstar’s documented migration process and verify the account before accepting the transfer.

- Verify official updates before launch. Recheck Rockstar’s platform, release-date, online-mode and transfer announcements before placing a preorder. Those details can materially change the recommendation.
What is still unknown
The following points were not confirmed by the official materials used here:
- Whether GTA VI Online will exist, and whether it will be available at launch.
- Whether GTA 6 will support cross-play between PlayStation and Xbox.
- Whether a PC version will be released, and on what date.
- Whether GTA 5 Online characters, currency, properties or other progression can transfer to GTA 6.
- Whether GTA+ benefits will extend to any future GTA 6 online service.
Rumors can be useful conversation starters, but they are not purchase specifications. Base a preorder on the confirmed single-player product and announced platforms; base an online purchase on features Rockstar has actually documented.
Bottom line
GTA 5 Online is the right choice for immediate multiplayer, existing progression and PC play today. GTA 6 is the right choice for a new single-player adventure in Leonida if you own or plan to buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and are comfortable waiting until its scheduled November 19, 2026 release. Until Rockstar confirms GTA VI Online, cross-play, PC support or progression transfers, do not buy GTA 6 solely on the assumption that it will replace GTA 5 Online.
