Setting and story: Vice City becomes the state of Leonida
From Los Santos to Vice City
GTA 5 takes place in Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County. GTA 6 returns to Vice City, the series’ fictional version of Miami, but the confirmed setting is larger in geographic scope: Rockstar identifies the wider state of Leonida as the stage for the story. That wording matters. It establishes a state-wide setting, not a published map measurement, so it is too early to claim that GTA 6 has a larger explorable area than GTA 5 in square miles.

GTA 5 concentrates its satire and action around a major city, desert communities, mountains and the surrounding countryside. Leonida gives Rockstar a framework for moving between Vice City and other environments within one state. Until Rockstar publishes a map or detailed region list, the practical limits of that world remain unknown.

Jason and Lucia replace GTA 5’s trio
GTA 5’s campaign alternates among Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Their separate ambitions and conflicting personalities create missions that can switch viewpoints during a heist or chase. GTA 6 centers on Jason and Lucia instead. Rockstar’s official description says an easy score goes wrong, leaving the pair on the “darkest side of the sunniest place in America” and in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. They must rely on each other to survive.
That setup points to a more tightly connected partnership than GTA 5’s three-way structure, but it does not establish how character switching will work. Rockstar has not confirmed whether players can freely change between Jason and Lucia, whether each has separate abilities, or how many missions will require both characters. Those are gameplay questions still waiting for an official answer.
A story-driven design ambition, not a mechanics list
Rockstar founder Sam Houser described GTA 6 as part of the studio’s effort to push what is possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences. Take-Two has called it “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” These statements communicate the project’s ambition and presentation priorities. They do not prove a particular vehicle system, artificial-intelligence behavior, animation feature, mission structure or map size.
Trailer 2 was captured on PlayStation 5, which demonstrates the target hardware for that footage. It does not establish the final performance modes, resolution, frame rate or visual settings on either console. Those specifications have not been published in the cited official materials.
What could change in moment-to-moment gameplay?
More connected partner play
Jason and Lucia’s relationship is the strongest confirmed clue about campaign structure. A two-person criminal partnership could produce missions built around coordination, escape routes and changing loyalties. It may also make the protagonists’ shared consequences more important than GTA 5’s three independent arcs. However, no official source has yet described cooperative play, a two-player campaign or an online interpretation of the pair. The confirmed product is single-player.

A broader range of environments
Because the story crosses Leonida, the campaign can plausibly move between dense Vice City districts and less urban areas. That is a setting implication, not a promise of specific activities. Rockstar has not confirmed the number of towns, wilderness zones, interiors, airports, islands or water routes. Do not treat trailer locations as a complete map.
Radio and atmosphere
Rockstar promotes an “In-Game Radio and Music Preview” and describes it as the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet. This is marketing language, not a measured comparison with GTA 5’s soundtrack. It does indicate that radio remains a major part of the world’s identity. The final station list, licensed songs, talk programming and regional availability have not been fully set out in the cited materials.

At launch, there is no official confirmation of specific changes to shooting, driving physics, police behavior, melee combat, property ownership, businesses, wildlife, economy, mission replay, character skills or interiors. Leaks and fan theories cannot be used as substitutes for those announcements. A careful comparison can describe the confirmed setting and protagonists while labeling unannounced mechanics as unknown.
Is GTA 6 bigger than GTA 5?
There is no authoritative size comparison yet. GTA 6’s story spans Leonida, while GTA 5 covers Los Santos and Blaine County, so the new game has a broader stated regional frame. Rockstar and Take-Two have not published a final map area, coastline length, number of settlements or usable interior count. “Bigger” could mean land area, density, activity count, verticality or story scope; the available evidence only supports the last of those with confidence.
For a practical expectation, treat Leonida as a different kind of scale rather than a guaranteed numerical increase. The state-wide premise may create more varied travel and a stronger contrast between urban and rural spaces, but the final comparison must wait for a released map and gameplay details.

Platforms and date
Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 release gives GTA 6 a November 19, 2026 launch date and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s support information also lists pre-orders for those consoles. PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC are not included in the cited launch-platform announcements. That is not a permanent statement about future versions; it means those versions have not been announced for this launch.

Take-Two lists a $79.99 Standard Edition. Standard and Ultimate Editions have been announced, but the cited materials do not provide the Ultimate Edition’s price or a complete contents breakdown. Regional pricing, taxes, retailer promotions and digital-store terms can differ, so check the store serving your country before ordering.
The physical copy is a download code
Rockstar’s support article says the physical edition is a boxed digital download code and does not contain a game disc. That affects storage, resale and installation: buyers need an internet connection to redeem and download the game, and the box itself is not a playable disc that can be installed offline. Retail availability is scheduled from November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading ahead of the November 19 launch.
GTA Online is the benchmark GTA 6 must follow
What GTA 5 established
Take-Two describes GTA 5 as an ever-changing world supported by regular free updates. GTA Online was included at no additional charge with every copy of GTA 5, then released as a standalone version on March 15, 2022. Over time it became a persistent service with missions, businesses, properties, vehicles, competitive modes, limited-time events and ongoing monetization. GTA+ is part of that current ecosystem.
This history explains why “online” means more than a multiplayer mode to GTA players. It implies a continuing world, post-launch updates, account progression, purchases and a service policy that can operate for years. GTA 5 provides the only established product baseline for judging what players may expect from a future Grand Theft Auto service.

What is confirmed for GTA 6
Take-Two’s latest cited pre-order announcement describes GTA 6 as featuring a single-player experience. In the same material, the company refers to the continuing “ever-evolving world of GTA Online” in the context of the GTA+ ecosystem. That wording confirms the current GTA Online service and the launch product’s single-player positioning. It does not announce a GTA 6 online mode.
Rockstar has not published an online roadmap for GTA 6 in the cited official sources. There is no confirmed online launch date, mode list, subscription requirement, monetization model, cross-play policy, shared-progression system or character-transfer program.
Will GTA 6 have GTA Online?
The accurate answer is: Rockstar has not said yet. GTA 6 launches as a confirmed single-player product, while the existing GTA Online service continues separately. A future multiplayer announcement is possible, especially given GTA Online’s success, but possibility is not confirmation and no launch window has been supplied.
Do not read the phrase “ever-evolving world of GTA Online” as evidence that GTA 6 includes a replacement service on day one. It is a reference to the existing GTA Online ecosystem. Until Rockstar specifies otherwise, assume only the announced single-player launch product when deciding whether to pre-order.
Will GTA 5 Online progress carry over?
No transfer has been announced. Rockstar has not confirmed that GTA 5 characters, money, properties, vehicles, rank, achievements or purchases will move to a future GTA 6 service. It has also not confirmed whether the two games would share accounts, inventories or progression.

The safest planning rule is to treat GTA 5 Online and any eventual GTA 6 online mode as separate until an official migration policy says otherwise. Do not buy in-game items in GTA 5 on the assumption that their value will transfer.
Will GTA 6 support cross-play?
Cross-play is unannounced. The confirmed launch platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but platform availability alone does not reveal whether players on those systems will share servers. Cross-progression, cross-generation play and PC cross-play are also unanswered. Wait for a Rockstar or Take-Two specification before choosing a platform based on multiplayer compatibility.
How GTA 6’s commercial scale frames expectations
Take-Two reported more than 190 million GTA 5 units sold in 2023 and more than 225 million Grand Theft Auto series units sold in 2026. It also reported more than 475 million views for GTA 6 Trailer 2 within 24 hours. These figures show the extraordinary audience waiting for the new release, but they do not prove particular gameplay or online features. For a story-focused player with a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, the launch case is clear: GTA 6 is a new single-player adventure in a new setting, with a published date and Standard Edition price. For a player buying primarily for an online successor, waiting is rational because the feature that matters most has not been described.
What to verify before ordering
- Confirm that your console is a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Check whether the listing is the Standard or Ultimate Edition and compare the stated contents.
- If buying physical, confirm that you are comfortable redeeming a download code instead of using a disc.
- Check your regional price, taxes, storage space and download requirements.
- Look for an official Rockstar announcement before assuming online multiplayer, cross-play or progression transfer is included.
Bottom line on GTA 6 vs GTA 5
GTA 6’s confirmed difference is a shift from GTA 5’s Los Santos-centered, three-protagonist campaign to a Vice City and Leonida story led by Jason and Lucia. The new game is positioned as a major single-player evolution for current-generation consoles, but Rockstar has not yet documented the mechanics that will make it play differently minute to minute. GTA 5’s long-running GTA Online service remains the benchmark, not a specification for its successor.
