GTA 6 may offer more ways to approach some missions than GTA 5, but that does not mean every mission will be open-ended. Rockstar developer Rob Nelson has described efforts to give players alternate routes and room to improvise, while keeping story-led sequences that limit or switch character control. The likely change is a closer blend of mission action and open-world systems—not unrestricted choice. That is an inference from interviews, not a hands-on verdict about the finished game.
What “mission freedom” means in this comparison
Mission freedom can mean several different things. A player might choose a route to an objective, ignore a suggested escape plan, decide which protagonist to control, or move between mission action and the open world without a sharp break. Those freedoms are related, but they are not interchangeable: an alternate route does not necessarily change the story, and two playable protagonists do not guarantee that either is available at every moment.

Rockstar’s descriptions point to a possible increase in route flexibility in some GTA 6 missions and a deliberate effort to make activities such as chases and robberies feel consistent with free roaming. They do not establish how many missions have alternatives or how much those alternatives affect outcomes.
How GTA 5 framed missions and free roaming
In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser described GTA 5 as combining structured missions with less-directed tasks that still had goals, alongside open-world exploration. He summarized the distinction this way: “In a game, when you’re doing missions you’re doing a job, and in the open world you do what you want.” (The Guardian, September 17, 2013.)
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
That description is a design philosophy, not a claim that every GTA 5 mission plays identically or that the game offers no choices. It does, however, make a useful comparison point: GTA 5’s creator presented authored jobs and open-world freedom as complementary modes, rather than saying every mission should become an unrestricted sandbox.
What Rockstar has described for GTA 6
Some missions may allow more than one route
In an interview transcript republished by ThePawn02 and attributed to IGN, Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development, said the team was trying to balance player freedom with storytelling. He described a conscious effort to open up missions where possible without compromising the quality of the experience. His examples included multiple ways out of a tower block and a police chase in which a player could ignore the suggested optimal route and still escape. (ThePawn02 interview transcript.)

These examples suggest that a mission may tolerate improvisation instead of requiring the player to follow a single prescribed path. They do not confirm that every objective has multiple solutions, that different routes create branching storylines, or that the player can ignore all mission constraints.

Nelson also described trying to make systemic activities—including wanted-level chases and robberies—feel consistent with the open world. The aim, as described in the interview, is to reduce the divide between a tightly directed mission and the systems a player encounters while roaming. That is a developer’s stated goal, not confirmation of how often the finished game will achieve it.

Nelson acknowledged a trade-off: too much freedom can make it harder to maintain mission quality. A game can allow a player to choose a route while still controlling the timing, viewpoint, or story beat that makes the sequence work.
Jason and Lucia will not necessarily be interchangeable
GTA 6’s two protagonists do not mean players can always switch freely between Jason and Lucia. In a translated Famitsu interview, Nelson described three kinds of situations: missions that allow switching, sections that restrict it for story reasons, and sequences that change the controlled character automatically. The translation is published by GTAVice.net (English translation of the Famitsu interview).
Rank #4
- Free switching: Some missions allow the player to change characters.
- Story-led restriction: In an early high-rise mission, Nelson said Jason is selected because of his former special-forces background and the circumstances of the scene.
- Automatic handoff: A bank escape was described as moving from Jason firing from the car to Lucia driving while Jason and Raul shoot.
The same translated interview describes a convenience-store robbery that can be carried out alone or with Lucia. GamesRadar+ also reports the broader distinction between sections that permit switching, restrict it, or change control automatically (GamesRadar+ report). The examples clarify that character choice is contextual; they do not establish how frequently each type of control appears.

If the described approach carries through the finished game, the difference may be less about removing mission structure and more about giving players room to adapt within it. In a chase, for example, the player might take an unplanned route and still complete the escape. In a robbery, the available choice might concern whether to go alone or bring Lucia. In a story-critical sequence, the game may still select the character or hand control over at a specific moment.
Best Value
- The biggest, most Dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the Dynamic and ever evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players
That would make GTA 6’s missions feel more connected to the world’s systems without making them wholly player-authored. It is a reasoned comparison based on developer interviews, not a tested judgment about how the game feels in play.
What the interviews do not establish
- How many GTA 6 missions will offer alternate routes or approaches.
- Whether those alternatives produce different endings, major story branches, or only different ways through a scene.
- How often players can choose between Jason and Lucia, or how many sequences switch control automatically.
- Whether the final game will feel more flexible overall than GTA 5 to players.
The available descriptions are qualitative examples, not a mission count, percentage, or hands-on evaluation. They support a cautious expectation of more flexibility in some situations—not a promise that every mission can be completed any way the player wants.
