Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRockstar is reportedly giving players more than one way to complete some GTA VI story mission objectives. The clearest examples so far are a high-rise escape with several possible routes and a driving escape where the player can ignore a suggested route and still lose the police. That is a real shift toward flexibility, but the reporting describes a handful of missions, not a game built around open-ended story design.
The criticism Rockstar is responding to
The complaint is familiar to anyone who has played a recent Rockstar open-world game. Free roam lets you drive, shoot, chase and rob almost anything you can see, but many scripted missions force a single approach. Deviate from the intended method and the mission fails, sometimes with a restart that feels punitive after the freedom of the open world. Notebookcheck’s October 8, 2026 report presents this as a recurring criticism among players rather than a consensus, and illustrates it with one fan comment:

“It’s the game design of Rockstar wich is a paradox. a paradox in which you get a restrictive game over in the scripted missions if you leave or don’t do what Rockstar wants you to do. on the other hand you have total freedom in free roam, to become whatever you want, to do whatever you want.”

That single comment is an illustration of the argument, not survey evidence of how many players hold it. No reliable figure measuring how widespread the criticism is has been published, so the article’s claims rest on Rockstar’s reported design direction rather than on a measured count of complaints.

What Rockstar is reportedly changing
According to the same report, the goal is for missions to feel more like a continuation of the open world, with some chases and robberies working the same way in missions as they do in free roam. Two examples show what that looks like in practice.
High-rise escape with multiple routes
In the reported high-rise escape, the mission objective stays the same, but more than one path to completing it is available. The point is not that the player can skip the objective. It is that the route through the building is a choice rather than a single corridor the designers scripted.
Driving escape that ignores the suggested route
In the reported driving escape, the game suggests a route, but the player can disregard it and still escape the police. This is the closest example to the free-roam logic the criticism asks for: the mission cares about the outcome, not the exact path the game expected.

What these examples do not show
Two examples cannot establish how the whole campaign is structured. The reporting does not say that every story mission supports alternate solutions, that missions branch into different outcomes, or that the narrative changes depending on how a player approaches a scene. The supported claim is narrower: in certain missions, more than one valid route to the same objective is reported.
It is also not established how many missions include this kind of flexibility, or whether the escape examples are typical of the chase and heist sequences across the game. Until players can compare the shipped missions directly, the safest reading is that flexibility is a design direction for some missions, not a guaranteed feature of every one.
Where cinematic direction still limits choice
The same reporting says Rockstar still plans cinematic sequences for major story moments, and that these may restrict player freedom. That trade-off is the central tension in the article. A scene built around a performance, a reveal or a set-piece camera angle needs the player to be in a specific place and doing a specific thing. Giving the player unlimited choice at those moments would undercut the staging.

The useful question for players is therefore not “can I do anything in this mission?” but “is this moment a scripted sequence, or an objective where I choose the method?” The reports suggest that Rockstar expects both kinds of moment to exist in the same game.
Realism versus convenience
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, described a second trade-off in comments reported by PC Gamer on October 4, 2026. In that report, his words were:
“Sometimes you need things to feel realistic to help with immersion, and conversely, sometimes you need to forego realism in favour of what’s convenient for the player”.

GamesRadar+ reported a longer version of the same remark, with US spelling and an additional line: realism can help greatly with immersion, but too much can feel tedious, so the team tries to find the right balance. The two outlets differ in wording, so quote whichever version you cite and attribute it to that outlet.
This matters for missions because a rule that a player must follow exactly is often a realism rule, and a rule that lets the player improvise is often a convenience rule. Nelson’s comments suggest Rockstar will decide case by case rather than apply one standard to every mission.
What the developer statements do and do not establish
- Nelson (realism versus convenience): establishes a stated design principle. It does not show how often that principle affects missions.
- Gauvey-Kern (Jason and Lucia): in the same PC Gamer report, game writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern said: “We wanted both protagonists to be vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other.” This describes character writing, not mission freedom.
- Humphries (tone): Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, said that recreating today’s world requires it to be “more over the top, more insane, more in your face.” This concerns satire and tone, not mission design.
Game context and platforms
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page describes the story of Jason and Lucia in Leonida and Vice City, and lists PlayStation 5 under “Plays Best On.” Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 announcement named PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Release timing has moved since that 2025 announcement, so check Rockstar’s official page for current platform and launch details before planning around any date.

EL PAÍS reported on an August 2026 preview visit and interview, and its account supports the game’s dual-protagonist framing and its emphasis on interactive world detail. That coverage describes what developers said and showed; it does not replace hands-on testing of the mission design.
What remains unproven
The story so far is a stated intention, supported by two reported examples and a set of developer comments. What is not yet established is how many story missions offer alternate routes, how far those alternatives extend beyond escapes and chases, and how often a cinematic moment still forces one method. Those answers will come from the shipped game, and from players comparing missions against the fan complaint that started this discussion.
If Rockstar delivers the design it describes, the fix will be measured in fewer failed missions for players who take an unexpected route, not in a campaign where every objective can be solved any way a player likes.
