Was GTA 6 delayed again?
Yes. Rockstar first targeted a 2025 release window, then moved the game to May 26, 2026, and later to November 19, 2026. The second move added another six months. In its November 2025 announcement, Rockstar apologized for extending the wait and said the additional months were needed to finish the game to the level of polish players expect. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick likewise said that if a game needs more time to become the best possible version of itself, the company will give it that time.
That makes November 19 the current public target, not a guarantee that no further change is possible. Zelnick has said that when Take-Two sets a date, it genuinely believes in it, while the company’s history with GTA VI shows that announced dates can still move when development priorities change.

Why has GTA 6 taken so long?
Take-Two’s explanation is broader than “Rockstar spent 13 years making one sequel.” Zelnick says the interval included substantial work on GTA V, GTA Online and the wider Grand Theft Auto business, alongside development of GTA VI itself. He specifically points to the PC relaunch of GTA V, remakes or re-releases for each new console generation, and the continuing operation of GTA Online and related services.
GTA V was repeatedly expanded and re-released
GTA V launched in 2013 but did not remain a one-platform product. Rockstar brought it to PC and updated it for newer console generations. Each version required engineering, certification, content support and ongoing maintenance, competing for resources with the next numbered entry.
GTA Online became a long-running service
GTA Online turned the series into a continuing online platform rather than a finished single-player release that simply waited for a sequel. Maintaining servers, shipping updates and supporting a large player base created a permanent workload. That does not prove GTA Online alone caused the delay, but it is a central part of the company’s explanation for what Rockstar was doing during the gap.

GTA VI is being built to an unusually high bar
Zelnick describes the decisive factor as the time required to make a game “as good as it can possibly be” for the Grand Theft Auto property. Rockstar’s own delay statement uses similar language, emphasizing final polish. These comments identify quality and technical readiness as the stated reasons for the extra months, rather than announcing a specific production problem.
How successful was GTA V during the wait?
The commercial performance of the existing game helped sustain the long development cycle. Take-Two reported more than 225 million GTA V units sold-in since 2013. In the same 2026 update, recurrent consumer spending for the Grand Theft Auto series was reported up 27% year over year. “Sold-in” refers to units supplied through the sales channel, while recurrent consumer spending covers ongoing player spending; neither figure is the same as a count of active players.
Those results explain why Take-Two could continue investing in GTA Online and updated versions of GTA V while Rockstar worked on the sequel. They do not mean the sequel was unnecessary or that GTA VI was ready earlier; they show that the existing ecosystem remained financially strong.

Will the next Rockstar game arrive sooner than GTA 6?
The headline claim that the next game “won’t take as long” needs qualification. Zelnick says Take-Two has a plan with its labels, including Rockstar, but also says the company is not “cadence-driven” and does not commit to a fixed release rhythm for its properties. That supports a more cautious conclusion: Take-Two intends to manage future releases deliberately, but it has not promised a specific number of years between GTA VI and a named future title.
There is therefore no confirmed GTA 7 date, development schedule or guaranteed shorter interval. A faster follow-up would depend on the project’s scope, Rockstar’s support commitments and the quality bar the team sets—not on an annual or predictable franchise timetable.
