Rockstar has announced the launch and preload dates, but not a final install figure, so any specific 200GB, 250GB or 300GB claim is still speculation. The physical edition also needs an internet download because its box contains a code rather than a complete game disc.
What is confirmed for GTA 6 on PS5
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on November 19, 2026. The date appears on Rockstar’s official site and the PlayStation Store. Rockstar’s store listing says PS5 preload begins on November 12, 2026, one week before release.

That preload date applies to digital purchases and to the physical code-in-box edition. Rockstar says the physical version contains “a download code that can be used for the digital download of the game.” It is therefore not a conventional disc installation that lets you play entirely from the disc or install without downloading the game.

Those requirements are separate from the amount of local storage GTA 6 will occupy.

Why there is no trustworthy GTA 6 download-size number yet
Rockstar and PlayStation have not published an official PS5 download or installed-size figure in gigabytes on the official pages currently available. Until one of them posts a number, there is no confirmed answer to “How many GB do I need for GTA 6?”
Online claims of 200GB, 250GB, 300GB or another exact figure should not be treated as requirements. A leaked listing, screenshot or social-media post cannot establish the final size, and the download package can differ from the installed footprint because of compression, decompression and update data.
The number that matters will be the size shown by the PlayStation Store or the console’s installation prompt when Rockstar publishes the final package. That figure may also change after launch as patches and additional content are released. Do not delete games or buy an expansion drive solely because an unofficial post names a capacity.

You can prepare without knowing the final file size by treating the unknown figure as a capacity-planning problem rather than guessing a number.

Check the space available now
- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Storage and review console storage, installed games and applications.
- Note the free-space figure, then identify large games you no longer play, duplicate media and old captures.
Keep more free space than the eventual download alone. The console may need room to download, unpack and apply an update, and the store can require temporary working space during installation. The exact allowance is not stated for GTA 6, so avoid planning around a single guessed number.
Use the release dates to schedule preparation
Because preload is listed for November 12, you can clear space before that date instead of waiting for launch day. Preloading can reduce release-day traffic and lets the console complete the download in advance, but it does not make the game playable before the November 19 release unless Rockstar and PlayStation unlock it earlier in your region.
Decide whether you need active or archive storage
If you expect to keep several large PS5 games installed and playable, an internal-compatible M.2 SSD is the relevant upgrade. If you mainly want to keep games for later and do not mind copying them back before playing, USB extended storage can be sufficient.

PlayStation’s guidance states that an installed M.2 SSD can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games. Its USB guidance makes the opposite distinction: PS5 games may be stored on USB extended storage, but game data must be copied back before play. That difference is more important than the drive’s advertised capacity when choosing an upgrade for GTA 6.

Installing an M.2 SSD for GTA 6
An M.2 drive is the practical option if the console’s built-in space is tight and you want GTA 6 available without moving it between drives. Use a model that is explicitly compatible with the PS5 and includes a heatsink or a thermal solution that fits the console’s bay and clearance limits. Capacity is your choice; PlayStation supports compatible expansion up to 8TB, but Rockstar has not said that any particular capacity is mandatory for GTA 6.
Preparation checklist
- Back up important saves and captures before opening the console.
- Turn the PS5 off completely, unplug it and let it cool.
- Confirm the M.2 form factor, physical dimensions, heatsink fit and Sony compatibility requirements for your PS5 model.
- Have a small screwdriver available and work on a clean, static-safe surface.
Console setup
- Install the M.2 SSD in the PS5 expansion bay according to the console’s hardware instructions.
- Reconnect the console and start it. The PS5 should detect an unformatted compatible drive and offer to format it.
- Accept formatting only after confirming the drive is the one you intend to erase; formatting removes data already on it.
- After formatting, open Settings > Storage to confirm the new M.2 capacity.
- When downloading or moving a game, select the M.2 storage location if the console offers a choice.
Once the drive is installed and formatted, PlayStation says it can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 games. If the console rejects the drive, check the model, dimensions, heatsink clearance and compatibility information rather than assuming GTA 6 is at fault.
Preloading GTA 6 on PS5
Digital purchase
- Open the GTA 6 product page in the PlayStation Store or find it in your game library after purchasing.
- On or after November 12, 2026, look for the download or preload control shown for your account and region.
- Choose the destination storage if the PS5 presents that option, then start the download.
- Leave the PS5 connected to power and the internet if you want the download to finish while the console is in Rest Mode. Your system’s Rest Mode download settings must allow network downloads.
- Check the game tile after the download completes. A countdown or locked status can remain until the November 19 release time.
The exact release-hour unlock is not stated in the available listings and can vary by region, so do not infer a universal midnight time from the preload date.
Physical code-in-box edition
Redeem the single-use code supplied in the box through the PlayStation Store account that will play the game. After redemption, the console downloads the game in the same way as a digital purchase. Keep the code secure: a used code cannot normally be transferred to another account, and the box does not provide a complete disc-based fallback.

Buying the physical package therefore does not eliminate the need for broadband access or sufficient local storage. It may provide packaging or retail availability, but the playable software still arrives as a download.

The download will not start
If the PS5 reports insufficient space before downloading, remove or move other content, then retry. Use Settings > Storage to delete games you can redownload from your library, move compatible data to an M.2 SSD or archive PS5 games to USB.
The download completes but installation fails
A completed download can still require additional working space while files are unpacked or updated. Free more room than the displayed package size, restart the download and check for system updates. Do not rely on the size of a compressed download as the final storage requirement.

A USB drive contains GTA 6 but the game will not launch
This is expected for PS5 software stored on USB extended storage. Copy the game back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, wait for the transfer to finish and launch it from that destination.

The preload option is missing
Confirm that the purchase is linked to the account currently signed in, that the date is November 12 or later in your region, and that the console has an internet connection. A physical code must be redeemed before the download appears. Regional storefront timing and account status can affect when the control is displayed.
The console asks for account or serial-code information
Follow the PlayStation Store prompt and use the Rockstar account or single-use serial code requested for your region. The store’s warning means these requirements can apply to particular features; it does not provide a separate GTA 6 storage figure.
Cost and purchase details relevant to storage planning
The US list price identified for the Standard Edition is $79.99, according to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., in 2026. That is a one-time list price for that market, not a storage fee, and regional storefront prices may differ. Check the live PlayStation Store or retailer listing before buying because prices, taxes and editions can change.

Storage hardware is a separate purchase. Compare an M.2 SSD or USB drive by whether it can run PS5 games directly, Sony compatibility, capacity, sustained read performance, heatsink and thermal fit, warranty and price per terabyte. A larger drive is not automatically necessary: the final GTA 6 size has not been announced.
