Rockstar says it avoids naming specific real-world people, events and movements in Grand Theft Auto VI because development takes years: a joke tied too closely to a particular moment could feel dated by release. The political satire is still there, but it is built into fictional Leonida rather than confirmed references to Donald Trump, MAGA or named candidates.
That explanation comes from Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, in an interview with LOVE Magazine, as quoted in coverage published around October 6, 2026. Humphries put the aim this way: “Because we are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that.”

Why is Rockstar avoiding real names in GTA 6?
Humphries’ stated reason is creative timing and specificity, not a confirmed legal concern. A game made over several years can lose the force of a punchline if it depends on a particular politician, headline or movement that has changed by the time players encounter it. Rockstar wants the game to feel connected to its release era without reproducing the real world too literally.
That approach does not mean the game avoids politics. It means its satire can draw on recognizable political habits and conflicts without establishing that a particular real person or group is being depicted.

How will GTA 6 satirize politics?
In Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional Florida, political life appears through familiar media and campaign settings rather than confirmed real-world names. Humphries described a world filled with characters and “culture wars necessary to make it feel alive,” alongside satire that is “larger than life, and more grotesque.”
- Election signs and campaign robocalls

These are reported elements of the fictional setting, not confirmation that any candidate, party or movement has a one-to-one counterpart in the game.

Is this a change from earlier Grand Theft Auto games?
Humphries said earlier Grand Theft Auto games “never really” focused much on national politics. He singled out GTA IV as a notable exception: its satire engaged with the Patriot Act, the rise of Homeland Security and the post-9/11 atmosphere of New York.
The distinction is not that earlier games lacked social or political satire. Rather, the reported comments suggest Rockstar tends to build its critique through fictional settings, institutions and exaggerated culture, instead of centering national politics on named contemporary figures.
