Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not officially announced a Windows PC version or release date. Rockstar’s product page says the game “Plays Best On PlayStation 5,” but official material does not publish resolution, frame-rate, storage or benchmark comparisons between consoles.
Which consoles can I play GTA 6 on?
At launch, GTA 6 is confirmed for two current-generation console families:

- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X
- Xbox Series S
Rockstar’s official GTA VI product page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and gives a launch date of November 19, 2026. Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 release uses the same platform list and describes the game as launching for PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S systems.

That means the Xbox Series S is included in the launch family, not just the more powerful Series X. There is no official listing in the cited material for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, a cloud-only edition or a mobile version. Do not assume that a previous-generation copy, backward-compatibility entitlement or cloud version will be available unless Rockstar or Take-Two announces one.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
When does GTA 6 come out?
The confirmed release date is November 19, 2026. This date appears on Rockstar’s product page, Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 pre-order release and the official Xbox listing.
Some availability details happen before launch:
- Physical retail copies are expected to ship or become available for pickup from November 12, 2026.
- Digital pre-loading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026.
- The game itself remains locked until the November 19 launch date.
“Available for pickup” or an earlier delivery window does not mean the game can be played a week early. Retailers may also set different delivery times by country, so check the local listing for the retailer you use.
Is GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox Series S?
Yes. GTA 6 is confirmed for both PS5 and Xbox Series S, as well as Xbox Series X. The Series S is therefore a supported launch console even though the Xbox family has two hardware tiers.

Rockstar and Take-Two have not supplied official launch targets for resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, ray tracing, loading times, storage size or console-specific features.
Until independent testing and complete technical specifications are available, it would be inaccurate to claim that one console runs GTA 6 at a particular resolution or frame rate. A Series S owner should treat support as confirmed but wait for the final technical details before predicting how its image quality or performance will compare with Series X or PS5.
What does “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” mean?
Rockstar displays “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” on its official GTA VI product page. The wording establishes Rockstar’s preferred platform message, but it does not define a measurable advantage.
It does not, by itself, confirm:
- a higher frame-rate mode;
- a higher output resolution;
- shorter loading times;
- exclusive missions, vehicles or other game content;
- DualSense controller features; or
- better online performance.
Those details require a separate technical announcement or testing. Use the phrase as Rockstar’s stated preference rather than as proof of a specific graphics or performance lead.

PS5 versus Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6
Both console families are confirmed launch platforms, so the practical choice depends on the hardware you already own and the information Rockstar has actually published. The following table separates confirmed facts from areas that remain open.
| Question | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| Launch platforms | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S |
| Release date | November 19, 2026 |
| Rockstar’s platform message | “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” |
| Official resolution targets | Not published in the cited official material |
| Official frame-rate targets | Not published in the cited official material |
| Official storage requirement | Not published in the cited official material |
| Official PS5-versus-Xbox benchmark | Not published in the cited official material |
If you already own a supported console
Buying a second console solely for GTA 6 is difficult to justify before the game’s technical specifications are published. If you own a PS5, the official “Plays Best” wording gives you Rockstar’s stated preference. If you own an Xbox Series X or Series S, your console is an announced launch platform and does not require a platform change to play the game.
If you are choosing between PS5 and Xbox Series X
Compare the complete ownership decision rather than relying on unverified GTA 6 performance claims. Consider the console’s purchase price in your region, the games and subscriptions you already use, controller preference, storage capacity, your display and the online account ecosystem where your friends play. Rockstar has not published enough GTA 6-specific data to rank Series X and PS5 by resolution or frame rate.
If you are considering Xbox Series S
Series S is officially supported, but the cited announcements do not state its output resolution, frame-rate mode, required free space or visual settings. It is therefore reasonable to buy it only if its broader value fits your needs; do not buy it on the assumption that it will match Series X or PS5 technically. Wait for final specifications if those differences are the main reason for your purchase.

There is no officially announced PC version or PC release date in the Rockstar, Take-Two or Xbox listings cited for this article. A Windows launch may be discussed in reports or predictions, but those are not confirmation.
As of October 18, 2026, the safe answer is:
- PC at launch: unconfirmed.
- PC release date: unconfirmed.
- 2027 PC reports: treat as rumor unless Rockstar or Take-Two publishes a date.
Do not pre-order a PC edition that has not been officially listed. Do not assume that a console purchase grants a future PC copy, that saves will transfer, or that an Xbox purchase includes Xbox Play Anywhere. Those entitlements require an explicit future announcement.
Why a rumored PC date is not a confirmed date
An anonymous-source report, retailer placeholder or analyst prediction can suggest what might happen, but it cannot establish an available product. Confirmation would require a dated announcement or platform listing from Rockstar or Take-Two. Until then, a PC player should plan around the confirmed PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release rather than a promised Windows date.

GTA 6 editions and prices
Take-Two announced two editions and US prices on June 24, 2026:

| Edition | Announced US price | Included information |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $79.99 | Base game |
| Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | Additional vehicles, weapons, apparel and action |
These are the announced US prices, not a universal worldwide price. Taxes, currency conversion, retailer pricing and regional editions can change what you pay elsewhere. The Ultimate description identifies additional in-game content but does not, in the cited material, specify every item or explain whether any future expansions are included.
Take-Two also says digital pre-orders or purchases made before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack. Digital pre-orders include one free month of GTA+. Check the final store terms for your region before completing a purchase, because promotional eligibility can depend on the platform and timing.
Does the physical GTA 6 copy have a disc?
No. Rockstar Customer Support, updated August 18, 2026, says the physical version contains a download code for the digital game and that no disc is included in the box.
“Physical” therefore refers to the retail package, not to an optical game disc. You will need to redeem the code, download the game and have sufficient storage and internet access for that download. The package may still be useful if you want a boxed purchase or a retailer pickup, but it does not provide an offline disc installation.
Before buying a boxed copy, verify that the code’s region matches your account and that the retailer’s return policy covers an opened code-in-box product. Once redeemed, a download code is normally tied to the account or platform region where it was activated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Digital or physical: which GTA 6 purchase makes sense?
Choose digital when
- You want pre-loading beginning at local midnight on November 12.
- You do not need a boxed item.
- You are comfortable storing the license on your console account.
Choose the physical package when
- You prefer retailer pickup or a boxed purchase.
- You understand that it contains a download code rather than a disc.
- You have confirmed the code region and redemption conditions.
Neither format removes the need to download the game. The key difference is how you receive and manage the license, not whether a disc is available.

What should you check before buying a console for GTA 6?
- Confirm the model. The announced Xbox platforms are Series X and Series S; Xbox One is not listed in the cited launch announcements. The announced PlayStation platform is PS5.
- Check local pricing. The $79.99 and $99.99 figures are US prices announced by Take-Two on June 24, 2026.
- Plan storage. Rockstar has not published the game’s required free space, so leave room for the eventual download and updates rather than relying on an assumed number.
- Check your display and network. Official resolution, frame-rate and download-size targets are not yet stated; a stable broadband connection will be needed for a code-in-box or digital download.
- Choose your ecosystem. Account libraries, friends, subscriptions and controller preferences may matter more than unannounced performance differences.
- Recheck technical details near launch. Independent testing and final store listings should answer questions that the current official announcements do not.
Common GTA 6 platform mistakes
Assuming a 2027 PC version is official
It is not. No cited official source gives a PC date. Label any 2027 claim as a rumor until Rockstar or Take-Two confirms it.
Buying a boxed copy expecting a disc
The physical package is code-in-box. It does not contain a disc, so the game still has to be downloaded.
Treating “Plays Best On PS5” as a benchmark
Rockstar’s wording is not a frame-rate or resolution specification. Do not convert it into a technical guarantee.
Assuming cross-buy or Play Anywhere
No cited announcement promises cross-buy, cross-save, Xbox Play Anywhere or a free PC entitlement. Wait for platform-specific terms.
Confusing early retail availability with launch
Physical copies are expected from November 12 for shipping or pickup, while the official game launch is November 19. Digital pre-loading also begins November 12, but play starts on launch day.
Bottom line for each type of player
- PS5 owner: GTA 6 is confirmed, and Rockstar says it “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.”
- Xbox Series X owner: GTA 6 is confirmed for your console; no official benchmark establishes a PS5 advantage in specific numbers.
- Xbox Series S owner: GTA 6 is confirmed, but Series S resolution, frame-rate and storage details have not been published.
- PC player: There is no official PC version or date yet; treat 2027 reports as rumors.
- Physical-copy buyer: The retail package contains a download code and no disc.
- Price-conscious buyer: The announced US prices are $79.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Ultimate, before local taxes or regional adjustments.
The firm facts are simple: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch on November 19, 2026; PC timing is unconfirmed; and physical retail packaging is code-in-box. Everything more specific about console performance should wait for an official technical announcement or reliable testing.
