Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are confirmed platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled to launch November 19, 2026. Rockstar says the game “Plays Best On PlayStation 5,” and Sony points to PS5 immersion features—but that is not a published head-to-head performance test. If you already own one of these consoles, the official information available does not show that you need to buy the other one just for GTA VI.
What is confirmed about GTA VI on each console?
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. Xbox’s official listing also confirms Series X|S support. The announced release date is November 19, 2026, which is still in the future as of October 4, 2026. Rockstar platform and editions information · Xbox listing

Rockstar’s official GTA VI site says “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” Sony explains that positioning through PS5 features: DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, sound from the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the PS5 SSD. These are official platform claims about immersion and features, not independent measurements comparing the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. Rockstar’s GTA VI site · PlayStation’s feature explanation

The official materials available do not publish side-by-side GTA VI resolution, frame-rate targets, graphics modes or measured loading times for PS5 and Xbox Series X. They also do not specify a GTA VI mode for PS5 Pro. Claims that one version runs at a particular frame rate or resolution, or has a proven overall graphics advantage, need reliable post-launch testing or new official specifications.
How to choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X
| Your priority | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 features and Rockstar’s stated positioning | PS5 | Rockstar explicitly says the game plays best on PS5; Sony identifies DualSense, audio and SSD features behind its positioning. |
| Your existing Xbox library, friends or ecosystem | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series X|S is confirmed as a platform, and choosing the system you already use can avoid extra cost and friction. |
| You own neither console | Compare local total cost | Check current console prices, bundles, storage and the game price where you live; the available information does not establish a universal price winner. |
| You already own one supported console and are considering a second only for performance | Wait for launch-version comparisons | The published information does not establish a performance difference that justifies buying another console. |
In short, lean PS5 if the named immersion features and Rockstar’s positioning matter to you. Choose Series X if your Xbox setup is the better fit. If you are buying from scratch, compare the actual local cost of console plus game rather than relying on prices from another region or an older listing.

Rockstar says code redemption can depend on the region of the platform account and recommends purchasing from a retailer in the country associated with that account.
