Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are confirmed platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19, 2026. There is no published like-for-like performance test establishing which console runs it better. Choose based on the system you already own, your friends and game library, controller preference, and local hardware prices—not an assumed resolution or frame-rate advantage.
Which consoles can play GTA 6?
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a scheduled release date of November 19, 2026. PlayStation’s listing also identifies PS5 Pro support. The official pages cited here do not list a PC or previous-generation console version, so do not buy another system on the assumption that one has been announced. See Rockstar’s platform and edition information and the PlayStation listing.

Does GTA 6 run better on PS5 or Xbox?
The official information available does not answer that with comparative measurements. Rockstar’s game page displays “Plays Best on PlayStation 5,” but it does not explain the phrase with a console-to-console benchmark, frame rate, resolution, or image-quality comparison. Treat it as Rockstar’s stated PS5 positioning, not proof of a specific technical advantage. Rockstar’s August 2026 extended look was captured entirely from PS5 in-game footage; footage from one platform is not a comparison with Xbox. See Rockstar’s current GTA VI page and its August 27, 2026 extended-look announcement.
PlayStation advertises DualSense vibration and trigger effects, Tempest 3D audio, and fast loading for its PS5 version. Those are platform features PlayStation lists, not independent comparative tests. If those particular controller or audio features matter to you, they may tilt your choice toward PS5; the available sources do not establish that Xbox lacks platform-specific features generally.

Compare the game editions and US digital prices
Rockstar lists Standard and Ultimate Editions. Standard includes the game; Rockstar says it can be upgraded separately through the PlayStation or Microsoft storefront after code redemption. Ultimate includes the game and Ultimate Edition Upgrade items. The detailed bonus inventory is subject to updates, so check Rockstar’s live edition information before buying.
| Edition | PlayStation digital listing | Xbox digital listing |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | $79.99 |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | $99.99 |
These are US storefront prices observed on October 9, 2026, not guaranteed prices. They do not compare console hardware costs and exclude any differences from taxes, another region, retailer discounts, or physical-retailer offers. Check the PlayStation US listing and Xbox US listing for current prices. Rockstar’s support page also describes preorder bonuses and a one-month GTA+ offer subject to dates and platform conditions; verify the live terms rather than assuming an offer is still available.

What does “physical” mean for this release?
Rockstar says the boxed version contains a digital download code, not a disc. That matters if you expect to lend, resell, or play from a physical game disc: the box is a way to buy a code, not a disc copy.
Rockstar says PlayStation code redemption is limited by the region associated with the platform account. Xbox codes are not region-locked, but Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the country of your platform account to avoid activation problems. If buying across borders, check code compatibility before purchase. Details are on Rockstar’s platform, edition, and version page.

How to choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
- You already own one of the supported consoles: Starting with your existing system is the simplest choice; the listed game prices are currently the same in the cited US storefronts, while the sources do not establish a performance winner.
- Your friends or game library are on one platform: Those existing connections and purchases can be more useful to your setup than an unverified technical advantage for this game.
- You care about a specific controller or audio experience: Consider PS5 if DualSense effects and PlayStation’s advertised Tempest 3D audio are priorities.
- You need to buy a console: Compare local hardware prices and the broader games and services you expect to use. The cited listings cover game prices, not the cost of either console.
- You prefer a boxed purchase: Remember that Rockstar describes the box as containing a download code rather than a disc, and check account-region compatibility before buying.
Rockstar described the release as “a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S” in its June 24, 2026 announcement. See the Rockstar Newswire announcement.
