Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Vice City and the wider fictional state of Leonida, with Jason and Lucia’s criminal story extending across that state. It has not confirmed how much of Leonida can be explored immediately, whether missions unlock or restrict regions, or how story progression is organized. The safest expectation is a large, geographically varied setting whose access rules remain unknown until Rockstar publishes more gameplay information or the game launches. Treat the scale of Leonida as confirmed world-building, not proof that every location is freely available from the opening mission.
What Rockstar has actually confirmed about the GTA 6 map
Rockstar’s public material establishes the setting’s breadth, but it does not provide a map-access rulebook. In its May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 announcement, Rockstar says Jason and Lucia are caught in a criminal conspiracy “stretching across the state of Leonida” and invites players to “Explore Vice City and beyond.” That wording confirms the story’s geographic scope and the importance of the setting. It does not state that every region is open at the beginning, that travel is unrestricted between missions, or that the campaign follows a particular unlock sequence. Rockstar’s setting page, Grand Theft Auto VI: Only in Leonida, names Vice City and several other destinations: Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. These are official place names in the game’s fictional state. The page does not publish a measured map area, travel time, district boundaries, or a statement that all of those destinations are available as free-roam spaces from the start. See the official Leonida setting page.

Why a large setting does not automatically mean unrestricted access
Open-world games can contain a broad map while still controlling access through story chapters, wanted-level systems, temporary barriers, character abilities, transport rules or mission-specific restrictions. A promotional reference to a state or to destinations outside the main city identifies the fictional geography; it does not reveal the moment-to-moment progression model.

That distinction matters because players often treat a named location as an accessibility promise. A place can be present in the world but initially unavailable, reachable only during a mission, or accessible on foot while certain activities remain locked. Rockstar has not said which of those arrangements applies to GTA 6. There is also no official map-size figure, mission count, campaign length or percentage describing how much of Leonida is explorable.
Can you explore the whole map in GTA 6?
There is no confirmed yes-or-no answer. Rockstar has shown and described a setting that includes Vice City and multiple locations across Leonida, so the eventual game is clearly not being presented as a city-only experience. However, the official pages reviewed do not say whether the whole state is accessible at the opening, whether areas unlock in stages, or whether some locations are limited to particular missions.
Until Rockstar explains the access system, any claim that players can cross the entire state immediately is speculation. The same is true of the opposite claim that every rural or coastal region is locked behind story progress. A reliable answer will require an official gameplay explanation or hands-on information after release.

Is GTA 6 an open-world game?
Rockstar’s setting language strongly points to a large, explorable world: Vice City is described as part of Leonida, and the official material names destinations beyond the city. In ordinary player language, that supports calling GTA 6 an open-world title. It still does not answer the narrower question of how open the campaign is at each stage.

“Open world” describes the broad structure of the environment, not a guarantee that every road, activity and mission is available at all times. The game could combine free driving and optional discovery with chapter-based restrictions, mission-only locations or temporary closures. Rockstar has not published enough detail to distinguish among those possibilities.
Do missions unlock areas in GTA 6?
Rockstar has not confirmed that missions unlock areas, nor has it confirmed that they do not. The available material contains no mission list, chapter breakdown, access diagram or statement about gates between regions. It also does not establish whether progression is linear, branching or selected by the player.
Jason’s background working for local drug runners in the Keys and Lucia’s recent release from prison provide narrative context for the characters. Those biographies may influence where the story begins or which locations matter first, but they are not evidence of a map-unlock sequence. Inferring a specific progression system from the characters’ histories would go beyond what Rockstar has stated.

That remains unconfirmed. Vice City is the headline location and a major part of the promotional identity, but Rockstar has not said whether players can freely roam it before completing an introductory sequence. The opening could provide immediate access, gradually open districts, or begin with a guided mission before broader exploration. All three are compatible with the information currently available.

Players should therefore separate two questions: whether Vice City exists as a substantial explorable setting, which Rockstar has established, and whether the opening hours permit unrestricted movement through it, which Rockstar has not established.
Possible progression models—and what is known about each
The following models describe common ways a game could combine a large setting with mission-led progression. They are decision frameworks, not predictions of GTA 6’s final design. Rockstar’s official material does not select one of them.
| Model | How it would work | Status for GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate broad access | Most of Leonida can be visited soon after the opening, while missions provide objectives rather than geographic permission. | Not confirmed. |
| Regional unlocks | Story milestones open new destinations or transport routes in stages. | Not confirmed. |
| Hybrid access | Players can travel widely, but specific activities, interiors or mission chains remain locked until required story beats. | Not confirmed. |
| Chapter-based structure | The campaign directs players through defined phases, with exploration expanding or narrowing according to the current chapter. | Not confirmed. |
| Mission-only locations | Some named places appear during missions but are not continuously available for free roaming. | Not confirmed. |
These models also affect optional content. Rockstar has not stated whether side activities are available from the beginning, tied to particular characters, dependent on region access, or connected to story outcomes. It has likewise not explained whether mission order is fixed or whether players can choose among multiple active objectives.

Official place names make the setting feel more varied than a single metropolitan map, but the names alone cannot supply missing design details. They indicate that Rockstar wants players to think about Leonida as a state with contrasting environments and communities. They do not establish distances, biomes, population density, road networks or the amount of content in each location.

| Destination named by Rockstar | Confirmed interpretation | Unanswered player question |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | The central city setting highlighted in the game’s promotional material. | Can all districts be entered immediately, and how much activity is available before the first major missions? |
| Leonida Keys | A destination associated in Jason’s biography with local drug runners. | Is the Keys available from the start, and does its narrative connection make it an early-story area? |
| Grassrivers | An officially named Leonida destination. | How it connects to the main roads, missions and optional activities. |
| Port Gellhorn | An officially named Leonida destination. | Whether it is permanently open, chapter-gated or primarily used by missions. |

What remains unresolved about missions and exploration
Several details that would determine the balance between roaming and directed progression are still absent from Rockstar’s public materials:
- When each part of Leonida becomes available.
- Whether travel between regions is unrestricted or controlled by story events.
- Whether missions are sequential, branching or player-selected.
- Which side activities are optional and when they appear.
- Whether exploration can alter story outcomes or only provide money, items and discovery.
- How many missions, chapters, activities or hours the campaign contains.
- Whether any locations are designed for missions only rather than persistent free roam.
None of these gaps should be filled with leaks, fan-made maps, trailer interpretation or assumptions based on earlier games. Those sources may be interesting, but they do not establish the launch rules for GTA 6.
How to judge new GTA 6 map claims
As Rockstar releases more information, use a simple evidence check before accepting a claim about access or progression:
- Check the source. Prefer an official Rockstar announcement, product page or gameplay presentation over an unattributed social-media post.
- Read the exact wording. “Explore Vice City and beyond” is an invitation to the setting; it is not a statement that every region is open from the first mission.
- Separate geography from mechanics. A named destination proves that Rockstar identifies it as part of Leonida, not that players can visit it at any time.
- Look for conditions. A trustworthy explanation should identify the platform, build, release status and whether access was observed during normal play or a specific mission.
- Watch for missing numbers. If a post supplies a precise map area, mission count or exploration percentage without a primary source, treat it as unverified.
- Recheck old information. Release plans and edition details can change, so use the current official page rather than a retailer listing or archived post.
Release timing and supported platforms
Rockstar currently lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6. A November 6, 2025 announcement schedules launch for November 19, 2026. That is a scheduled date, not a guarantee that cannot change. Read the date announcement.

The official game page also references pre-order editions, an Ultimate Edition and a limited Vice City Collection. Those references do not, by themselves, explain whether an edition changes map access, mission order or exploration rules. Verify the current edition contents, format and retailer before purchasing; do not assume that a bonus item or edition label represents additional regions or campaign chapters. Check Rockstar’s current GTA 6 page.
How to prepare for the first playthrough without assuming the answer
If exploration is your priority, the most useful approach is to treat the opening as an information-gathering period rather than expecting a particular unlock system. After launch, note which roads, activities and destinations are available without a mission, then record what changes after each major story beat. This will reveal the actual relationship between roaming and progression without relying on pre-release speculation.
- Explore the areas the game makes available before rushing into optional objectives.
- Read mission briefings for explicit restrictions, since a mission may temporarily limit travel even when the wider world remains open.
- Keep separate saves before major story decisions if the game allows manual saving, so you can test how progression affects access.
- Do not mistake a temporary mission boundary for a permanent map gate.
- Use the in-game map and activity markers as evidence of current access, not as proof that undiscovered regions are permanently unavailable.
- Expect official post-launch explanations to be more reliable than pre-release claims once players can verify the systems directly.
What Rockstar would need to clarify
A definitive comparison between map exploration and mission-based progression requires answers to four practical questions. First, which regions can be entered during the opening sequence and which require story progress? Second, are optional activities independent of the main campaign or attached to particular characters and chapters? Third, can players choose mission order, or does one required objective unlock the next? Fourth, does exploring a location change later story outcomes, or does it mainly provide optional content?
| Information players need | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Initial free-roam boundaries | Defines what “open world” means during the opening hours. |
| Regional gates and unlock conditions | Shows whether travel is controlled by missions, story chapters or another system. |
| Mission order and branching | Determines whether players can create their own route through Jason and Lucia’s story. |
| Side-activity availability | Shows whether exploration is a parallel playstyle or a reward for campaign progress. |
| Exploration effects on outcomes | Reveals whether discovering Leonida changes narrative consequences or simply expands optional play. |
Bottom line for players deciding what to expect
GTA 6 is being presented as a Vice City-and-Leonida adventure, not a city-only story. Rockstar has confirmed multiple destinations and a criminal conspiracy that spans the state, making a substantial setting a reasonable expectation. It has not confirmed unrestricted access, mission-based area unlocks, branching progression or the ability to explore Vice City before completing introductory missions. Until those rules are documented, describe the map’s scale as confirmed and its access model as unknown.
